Fantasy A Harry Potter series for HBO?

Well the movies have a timeless quality cause they don’t set any time period and don’t use any technology that would really date it.

I think Chris Columbus said he wanted it like Home Alone that way. It ages better in the long run.

I really am caught in this thing’s gravitational pull bc now I can’t stop wondering if the show will play up the period aspects of the story being set in the early/mid 90s or if it’ll basically take the movie approach of “we’re setting this whenever the **** we’re filming it, okay?”

It'd just be a matter of only using vehicles from the '90s and older for the muggle world scenes if they set it when the books take place, which wouldn't be that often but it's probably not worth the effort for them so I'm assuming it'll just be set in present day.

I don't understand...isn't Snape is supposed to be
ugly?

:o

I’ve never really considered Snape’s looks to be part of the reason Lily ended up with James, as much as him being a miserable prick.

I do appreciate that the choice for McGonagall is actually a good deal younger than Dumbledore this time around.

Casting a handsome black man as a guy described as a “greasy pale racist” is a choice. Also the optics of the situation between Snape and the Mauraders will be interesting if they’re all white.

To be fair, taking the obvious real world metaphors out of it, racism in the wizarding world never correlated with skin color, only if they were pureblood or not. I also wouldn't be surprised if they cast a black actor as either Sirius or Lupin.

Jesus Christ, I just realized that this Snape casting puts me in the same age group as Harry Potter’s parents.

Which I guess is truer to the books, but I can still feel my hip grinding into dust…

That pendulum is swinging at us. :sneeze:

At least you got to see young Dumbledore and his love story with Grindelwald... Oh wait.

In defense of our age group, James and Lily Potter were also VERY young when they had Harry. They were like 20 in the book canon. But I guess it doesn't matter when you're rich. :o

Oh boy, they are now officially announcing the cast. I wish they were just doing a new spin off (that isn't Fantastic Beasts) to expand the movieverse of Wizarding World. That would have been a lot interesting compare to a redo of all 8 movies... the comparison to the original movies is never gonna end.

Obviously I'm just speculating here, but considering it's official we're getting Essiedu as Snape in this, I have a quivering feeling that they might cast a POC as Harry.

Could they be that bold? Hmm...

My guess is it'll be Hermione like in the stage play.

Speaking of which, that actually has me wondering...if the show is a success and they go all the way through to the end of the series, do they then adapt Cursed Child as another season of the show? We all know WB would have preferred that to be a movie or two with the film cast returning but since there isn't a snowball's chance in hell of that happening anymore because Rowling is an a**hole, I could see them milking this out a little further if they can.

I could definitely see them adapting Cursed Child for another season, or at the very least a limited miniseries or something after the series wraps.

And I don't know, my gut is telling me someone in the trio is definitely going to be non-white and people will get mad, but I have a feeling it's going to be Harry. Just looking at the optics, having a black actor as Snape being madly in love with a white woman and then being harassed by her white husband and his white friends and then black Snape berating their white son is A LOT. So many different things to unpack about those in particular.

But we'll see.

I feel bad for the kids. They will be used by Joanne to replace the originals, who are very ant Rowling. And the kids will receive hate for not being the originals and, well, being part of profiting Rowling.

Ron will be black. :o

If they were to racebend Harry, they could make his mother Indian and keep his father Caucasian, or vice versa, so then he would be half-Caucasian half-Indian. Either way it happens, he could still inherit the green eyes and shaggy, dark black hair he’s described as having in the books. I thought of this because of some fan art that I’ve seen and it really works for the character. Female Indian redheads do exist in real life.

Hermione I could definitely see them making black like in the stageplay as others have said. Again, it would give her the wild, frizzy hair that she is described as having in the books.

Ron I’m guessing they will probably keep the same. He’s so associated with Rupert Grint, the previous actor who played him, being a redhead. There’s just something about his demeanor and his appearance that is just so inseparable from each other. Whenever I think of Ron, I think of goofy, hapless but well-meaning and loyal redheaded boy.
