They had their own problems to deal with. Daniel Radcliffe in particular had a severe drinking problem as a teenager. But even though social media wasn't really much of a thing back then, message boards and forums were, not to mention adult critics and awards shows like the Razzies had no problem tearing down child actors. Look at what happened to Jake Lloyd after The Phantom Menace. I'm sure people on the internet were saying plenty of hateful stuff about the Harry Potter cast at that time but since the movies and cast were generally well liked it got lost in the shuffle.
