I loved the character in the movie. Johnson nailed the cocky, protective personality that defines Quicksilver. The scenes with Hawkeye and Thor's hammer were especially great.
With that said, I was extremely upset that they killed him off. It's even worse because it's so obvious that he only died because of Whedon's determination to kill somebody just to "make the stakes feel real". Any number of civilian deaths could accomplish that, rather than kill off someone who would likely have been the breakout star of the movie. And to know they filmed him waking up, but decided not to do it, is even more frustrating.
Whedon has confessed that he wanted to kill a character off because real wars have repercussions, and by killing off a character he would simulate the attrition with a casualty among the Avengers. QS was going to be dead no matter what, apparently. What peeved me off is that Fox & Singer decided to use QS over Juggernaut after Whedon announced that he will have the Maximoff twins in AOU, and now by killing QS off he is essentially letting Fox has the one and only QS on the big screen. If that's not a concession I'm not sure what it is.
