Inhumans ABC's The Inhumans - General Discussion (news, updates, speculation...) - Part 1

How unknown a property is makes no difference as long as it is presented well written well and produced well. Give an audience an entertaining premise and you have nothing to worry about. Now that's easier said than done but it's very doable for something like the Inhumans. The anemic production value and poor writing in the trailers is evident for this though and unfortunate.

How bad is this going to BOMB? From the fan's reactions and early critic reviews, it seems almost a disaster.

I suspect this has to work against a stigma from people who dropped Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and it has a bad time slot, and the promotion/critical reception/fan hype aren't doing anything to overcome that. I think disaster territory is a strong possibility.

But hasn't a Friday time slot worked out for....well, not a lot, but at least a FEW shows?

Although the expectations for a scripted drama are quite different than those of Shark Attack.

That being said, the hope/assumption is that ABC will be OK if the show does well among delayed viewers.

Finally saw what Auran looks like and its awful. She looks nothing compare to the comic book version.

Triton is also a big miss. He isn't just a guy with green skin and eyebrows. They really failed in terms of the visuals. So this isn't something that can be considered as trashy yet an eye candy. Marvel really failed this one.

Runaways is actually looking very faithful to the comics from what we saw from the pilot trailer.

But still not very exciting.

Personally, I just wish they just turned these shows in a film with a budget of 30 to 60 million and they don't interfere with the other MCU films to make them different. Here, They look cheaper, can be dragging at times, always holding back in action and usage of other cb characters and they are incredibly long in content compare to a single MCU film or a trilogy of an Avenger.

Out of all the MCU TV shows, I have yet to rewatch one online. its either I am not interested or just concerned that it would be time consuming. I have seen every MCU film that I bought on disc at least three times.

“I can tell you that it was written on the material that you were given that the show that you have seen is not the finished product,” Loeb said when asked whether the series had turned out as he had hoped it. “If you’re asking me whether or not it was done, it’s not. So to be perfectly honest, I don’t understand your question.”

There's also the fact that the Inhumans are obscure characters who the general audience aren't as familiar with as they are with any other property in the Marvel U.

And even then, they're a hard sell to audiences today since what they represent is monarchy, isolationism, racial slavery, non-consensual genetic experimentation, etc. And Maximus is the villain who opposes these things while Black Bolt is the hero who reinforces them.

Inhumans was always a hard sell to people.

And people were sure that Guardians, Ant-Man and Doctor Strange were going to flop because they weren't well known.

And trailers aren't going to show all of "monarchy, isolationism, racial slavery, non-consensual genetic experimentation, etc." If the trailer looked like Game of Thrones meets X-Men, and looked made well, people would be all over this.

The Inhumans TCA panel did not go well apparently

From there, things started to go a little pear-shaped. When a reporter asked actor Anson Mount a question suggesting the show’s not good, he said: “You’re making me feel like Ben Affleck right now,” then he mentioned Simon and Garfunkel. Somewhere, the “Sound of Silence” was playing.

Is it me, or is Jeph Loeb incredibly defensive about questions even slightly critical about the series Marvel’s Inhumans.

Loeb's defensiveness regarding Inhumans is quite reminiscent of Simon Kinberg's "It's not a disaster" response to questions about FFINO. Not good. I would like to see an adult step in - Iger? - to either a) delay the program and put in the money required for a drama involving superhuman royals or b) cancel it altogether.

Many of the Inhuman characters - especially Lockjaw - would be fantastic additions to the cinematic MCU, so right now I'm hoping Buck's show goes away quietly and we see the rebooted version on the big screen in a few years. My preference is that the continuity between TV and film is maintained, but this time I will make an exception.

Eh, be fair. Loeb is in a tough position, especially if he *knows* Inhumans is a dumpster fire. He can't exactly admit it publicly. I kind of doubt its his fault, since this otherwise smells too strongly of Perlmutter. When the smoke eventually clears, I'm betting it turns out this all started with the Inhumans movie script, which then got chainsawed in order to make it still ( not ) work as a TV show. And the chainsawing happened, because Perlmutter insisted it *must* go forward. Even though they lacked anywhere near the resources to make it happen.

Yeah Loeb and Buck should take some of the heat, but Perlmutter is the main culprit. He wanted his pet project, xmen replacements to be an overnight sensation. The Marvel brand is very strong, but it can't always perform miracles. Feige knows whats up.

I can definitely see where the negative reaction to this is coming from, but given it's a TV show and not a film, despite the IMAX release, even if it is a disaster there's a chance to salvage it in later episodes. The big question will be how quickly ABC wants to pull the plug.

ABC are never in a hurry to pull the plug on Marvel shows. This show is getting 4 seasons at least. Quality and ratings does not seem to apply.

This mess definitely reeks of Ike exhibiting the thin skin of his short-fingered treasonous vulgarian chum and pushing through a project that had absolutely no business being a network television mini series.

I can see why Feige pulled the plug - the royal drama part is best suited for the telly but the outlandish powers and Kirby-esque environments don't work without a tentpole budget. But Mr. Perlmutter wasn't going to be shown up by his former charge and abandon his pet project, so here we are.

Agent Carter? And by the by, AOS's best season was its 4th.

Agents of SHIELD also dragged itself to the point where it approaches syndication numbers, before its ratings totally collapsed. Once it was renewed for a third season, the 4th and 5th became *much* more probable. Inhumans doesn't get that same benefit, especially since it has far shorter seasons. And that is assuming it doesn't have much worse ratings than AoS from day 1 ( which it probably will ), and much higher budget than AoS ( which it probably will ).

AOS definitely struggled ratings-wise in live airings, but it excelled in L+7 and outperformed prior ABC shows in the Tuesday at 10pm slot. It wouldn't have been brought back for the 5th season otherwise.

I don't see many similarities between the two programs. AOS, a spy show focusing on B and C level Marvel characters with "TV level" abilities was a good match for network TV. But as we've seen, Lockjaw (dog looks ok, teleportation effect looks terrible), Medusa, Black Bolt, Crystal and Attilan simply don't work on the small screen.

Thus no different from his old pal Avi. This will be every bit his Waterloo as Venom is Arad's

Lets just say Agents of Shield and Agent Carter will not have seen second seasons if they were airing on CBS and NBC.
