Abuse of Power Thread (Cops, Governments, Etc.) - Part 2

GOODNIGHT DEMOCRACY
By Robert Reich

1. First, destroy labor unions, so people have no way to bargain for higher wages and less capacity for political organization.

2. Crack down on college students, so they won’t oppose you (hint: burden them with so much student debt and make it so hard for them to find good jobs that they won’t dare rock the boat).

3. Undermine public education, so people are less able to think critically for themselves.

4. Cut deals with rich business executives and billionaires that if they back you you’ll reduce their taxes, slash government spending on the poor, and eliminate regulations that impinge on their profits.

5. Make most people economically anxious, frustrated, angry, and insecure.

6. Convince them their problems stem from “them” — foreigners, immigrants, racial or ethnic or religious minorities, intellectuals.

7. Make them cynical about democracy.

8. Convince them all they need is a strongman who will fix everything.

9. Fill the airwaves with big lies.

10. Get elected, and then take over.

BONUS ROUND
By Thaddeus Howze

11. Stock the government with incompetents, lobbyists, cronies and the children of your least knowledgeable politicians.

12. Demand loyalty oaths from your party members while increasing partisanship. Gridlock government until nothing important can get done.

13. Hire white nationalists into your government. It divides the country, polarizes your conservative base, and signals your commitment to the acceptable violence by Neo-Confederates, fascists Nazi-sympathizers and other incel-related, gun-toting *******s.

14. Secretly shorten the confirmation period for the lifetime appointments of 200+ judges across the nation. Since the Conservatives can't sell their ideas to the public, they needed a new way to control the national direction independent of national voting.

15. Create tax incentives for the richest corporations in the nation. Incentives so valuable the top organizations will pay nothing. Then turn around and complain about rising deficits, and demand we cut benefits from Medical, Social Security and other such "entitlement programs."

I am disturbed by what seems to be an increasing amount of reports of law enforcement killing shooting dogs.

I think it is a precursor to them killing people. Shooting anything should be a last resort, not the first option they go for.

Now, I'm not much of a stats person, but I think those graphs present some suspicious data...

Can't possibly imagine why someone may not trust the NYPD...

The NYPD really does not get why their reputation is so bad and it has nothing to do with the mayor.

So very sad but telling that we have protests over lockdowns for public safety and the wearing of masks and gloves because to those people that equates to "tyranny" but then something like this happens and not a peep.

And as I have repeatedly stated when there are stories in the public eye about the obvious (that is to say inarguable, because there's lots of bad cases championed by Liberals/Progressives no doubt...) abuses heaped upon African Americans and Latino Americans by various law enforcement organizations and individuals... What happens to people in those community should be seen as a "canary in a coal mine'. The powers that be and those who use authority to abuse and yes, even torture and kill will always start out with those in a society they consider "others", but they inevitably will work their way to the rest of the population. Don't argue with me, argue with the history of civilization.

But this case is yet another way to show how those who equate wearing masks or the raising of marginal tax rates as the same as real tyrannical authoritarian rule but who continually support the egregious assault on civil liberties and freedom that is The War On Drugs as being folk whose opinion is worth less than nothing. We have to stop pretending that all opinions are equal.

Another reason people distrust the cops. When they aren't profiling they are arresting innocent people who could not possibly have been involved in a crime. I do know there are some cops who have the mentality, "everyone is guilty of something," so they decide even if you didn't commit this crime, you did commit a crime somewhere else so they will set you up for this one, even if it means letting the actual guilty person(s) escape justice.

It's easy for the city or state to pay for the stupidity of cops but I wish it would come out of some of these cop's personal checks. Then you MIGHT see some cops act the way they are suppose to. Notice I said might. Even the stay at home enforcement, they seem to only target minorities.

I mean... These Change petitions go nowhere but it's pissed off enough for this:

On what level is this leniency justified? If I got caught with one pedo vid on my tablet or something I'm pretty sure I'd be serving longer than this guy. Time served my ass. Get caught with weed someplaces? "Gotta keep you off the streets you dangerous thug!" Have a cache of kidde porn while also being rich? "Eh... Time served with 210 days..."

That video is sickening. And it's always the same responses from racists who try and defend this: A) If he would have complied, nothing would have happened. Or B) Let's not jump to conclusions, let's wait until the whole story comes out. Then we keep waiting and then we forget about it. There's no way this video can be justified and I'm glad the feds are looking into it. That cop should be charged with murder and his partner as well. He stood by and watched a man murder another one in broad daylight.
