Superman Returns Addis Ababa: Easter Eggs, homages and deleted scenes

* Kevin Spacey's Lex Luthor paraphrased a quote made by Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor in the original 1978 movie: "Son, stocks may rise and fall, utilities and transportation systems may collapse. People are no damn good, but they will always need land and they'll pay through the nose to get it!" Along with that, after Spacey's Lex prefaces that sentence with, "Do you know what my father used to tell me," Kitty answers, "Get out," at one point in jest, the same response Miss Teschmacher gave Hackman's Lex in the original to a similar question.

* Ben Hubbard, the man who takes care of Martha Kent and the Kent family farm, was mentioned in Superman and later in the comic books but is actually seen in this film, but only for a few moments and at some distance.

* A model of Mt. Rushmore is shown with one of the faces being blown off during Luther's experiments with a Kryptonian crystal. In the second film, Mt. Rushmore was defaced by General Zod and his followers, and the face of Abraham Lincoln was destroyed in the process.

* The score composed by John Ottman will feature leitmotifs created by John Williams for the original film. Aside from the main "Superman March" theme, Ottman references the "Leaving Home Theme", the "Krypton theme" and the "Lois Lane Theme" (aka "Can You Read My Mind") in the score for the film. [12] The teaser trailer relies on the cue "The Planet Krypton", which was featured in the 1978 film.

* Some of John Barry's Kryptonian designs for Superman, including the Fortress of Solitude and the baby Kal-El's transport pod, have been recreated.

* The opening credits of this film use a three-dimensional, "zooming" text style similiar to the one used in the first film.

* The film mentions Lois' article "I Spent the Night with Superman" — written by the character in the 1978 film.

* As in the original two films, Lois still smokes (unlike her comic counterpart), and is still a horrible speller (as implied by the original film quote, "How many T's in bloodletting?", and the current film's "How many F's in catastrophic?").

* The final scene shows Superman in space, smiling at the audience, in almost the same pose as in the final scene of the 1978 film.
* The Kryponite asteroid from Ethiopia is the same mentioned in 1978 film.

Actually...

One other thing is if according to Singer that this movie takes place after Superman 2 then why would Luthor ask Jor-El about everything when Luthor himself already was told by Lara-El in S2.

He was told about the 3 PZ criminals by Lara in Superman II... he never asked about the crystals before. oh, and another homage:
KITTY: You act like you've been here before.

The jacket Routh wears on the farm when he throws the ball is the same kind that Reeve wore to the diner in Superman 2.

I think Lex referring to the Prometheus story is a lot like how the Rosenbaum Lex always aludes to historical/fictional figures as well.

I think that the jacket/white shirt/ jeans combo along with the effect used on his heat vision were the Smallville references they mentioned.

List'em peops. Because the movies are very similar, and the narrative construction is pretty much identical. I'll start off with a couple.

SR: Lex uses Kitty in an out of control car to distract superman while he robs the museum.
STM: Lex uses Ms. Teshmaker as a car crash victim to distract honry soldiers from protecting the nuclear missile they are escorting.

SR: Superman lifts new Krypton, a continent, to save the earth.
STM: Superman lifts California, a continent, to save California.

SR: Lois faints after her first meeting with supes
STM: Lois faints after her first meeting with supes.

go on, I'm sure there are millions more, seeing that both movies nearly share the same plot, with some obvious differences, yet still the same in essence.

the only 3 differences is....

1. the kid/ lois b/f
2. New krypton
3. the year it was made

STM: Superman lifts the San Andreas Fault to save California. he didn't lift all of California....and California is not a continent, hehe.

Since when is California a continent?

after 30 years of trying, that maniacal genius lex Luthor, has finally achieved his goal. At first he wanted california for its beach front property. He failed. Then he went for australia. Nearly got it, but in the end, was foiled again. Then he tried to grow his own land, and he failed at that too.... but.

Lex finally achieved his goal. He finally got himself a nice beachfront property... I thought that was a nice touch at the end.

when a nuclear weapon is used to seperate it from it mother continent, and it begins to fall into the ocean, that's when.

correct me if im worng but wasnt he supposed to conflict his thoughts bout coming back as Superman???

yea i wish they wouldnt have cut that stuff... i was looking forward to seeing it. theres a scene where clark stashes his suit in the daily planet closet... he has to go back and change. then the scene where he is holding the picture frame with the suit under it. they didnt have the scene where superman is lookin in the mirror with his glasses on either.

STM: lex has supes exposed to K, leaving him to die in a body of water
SR: lex has supes stabbed with K, leaving him to die in a body of water

I'll second that

Did anyone else think that Spacey's snappy delivery and the sentence structure of the lines, especially during the Prometheus bit sounded very much like Hackman's Luthor??

Also, when Supes stops in midflight to watch the ocean crack go toward Metropolis and teh closeup of his face, those seemed a lot like when in STM he first saw Lois' car in the dirt.

I thought it looked a lot like the look Reeve gave after letting go of the missile in space...seeing that the other missile had hit its target.

When Superman was saving Metropolis..and Jimmy took that perfect pose of Superman holding the Daily Planet over his shoulders..(the same pic that was one of the 1st official movie stills for SR)....

Did anyone see the iconic allusion to "Atlas holding the weight of the world on his shoulders"?

...or was that just me?

i thought the wig Lex wore when he stole the Kryptonite was a direct homage to Lionel's hair in Smallville. made me think of it, anyway.

I looked through all the pages and didn't see either of these.

Ma Kent is driving the same truck that she and Jonathan were in when they found Kal-el in Superman: The Move.

When Lex is telling Lois his plan for making everyone want to buy his land and technology he says "...and they'll pay through the nose to get it", which was straight out of S:TM.

The machine gun firing and the bullets bouncing off of Superman in SMR reminded me of the scene in STM when Supes is looking for Luthor's underground lair(after being summoned by a frequency only he and dogs can hear) and Lex has a few booby traps set up....one being machine guns and the bullets just bounce off him the same way !!

Was he in the scene next to Martha as Lois is leaving the hospital? If so then he'll be cropped out once the movie starts showing on TV's in full frame.

Clark still has a problem with walking through revolving doors.

STM: Clark kicks a football

SR: Clark throws a baseball
