Superman Returns Addis Ababa: Easter Eggs, homages and deleted scenes

Jack Larson, who played Jimmy Olson in the tv show The Adventures of Superman opposite George Reeves, was the bartender where Clark and Jimmy were drinking just before the shuttle disaster.

That reminds me.....he says I dont frink while I fly in STM

Yet we see him drinking and then running off....

Had the Krypton-visit scene been in the movie, it would have shown why he was so distraught, so alone, so driven to re-kindle with Lois, the one person who understood him as Superman and Kal-El and even Clark.

I think that point still comes across in the film: After spying on Lois and Richard, he flies away to Brando's speech about him not being "one of them". It's pretty obvious what is going on.

Just as filmmakers often dumb things down too much, the opposite is just as bad. We don't need to be hit over the head with 3 hour director's cuts, yet that's the trend fans always want to encourage.

Really Obscure Reference:

Lex Luthor ending up on a desert island at the end...."Where you been, on a desert island somewhere? SM2.

I hope we get a Lord of the Rings style extened edition with at least 20 never before seen minutes.
I heard thhat the movie was cut from three hours long becuase the long running time made the studio nervous. Can anyone confirm that?

Ok
I just got back from my 3rd viewing, and no one else seems to have seen these:
I wasn't sure the first time but im fairly certain that in the opening scene at kent farm when everything was shakeing one of the words on the Scrabble board spelled out "alein" i think there were others but i couldn't catch its a fast scene

also i dont know if this is intended or not..
but after they rescue superman from the water, when standing on the plane pulling superman aboard, Jason looks down at him and has a little curl, very much like superman's.
i thought that was cool, hopefully someone else can confirm.

On the scrabble board I read: ALIENATION...and speaking of Richard having a an s curl....I noticed that when he entered the food storage and rescued Lois and Jason...It was convenient with his next line "I Flew."

ah yes, i thought there was more to it but i couldn't make it out.

next time you see....I know you will....in the frame its the very bottom word

I think I got one no-one else mentioned :) :

Richard White's double-take when Clark uses the word "swell". It mirrors Lois' reaction when Clark uses it in STM ("Clark, there aren't many people comfortable saying that word")

Well for one, he doesn't order a drink, Jimmy orders FOR HIM..
(and if I remember correctly he never gets to drink it..)

Plus even if he did drink, he didn't KNOW he needed to be saving LOIS
at that very moment. You really think he's gonna sit theere and let Lois die because "I said I wouldn't fly when I drink..so let me sit here"...?

you know, I don't even understand how alcohol can affect him.

I'm not sure about this one. The music that's playing on Martha's radio when Kal-el returns...was it the same music that was either playing at the little bar where Zod and company go in when they first come to earth...OR...maybe the music at the diner where Clark gets beat up after he surrenders his powers? Again, not sure. It just seemed familiar.

I don't think it can. any drinking would most likely be for show.

Don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but this is a DELETED SCENE:

Remember the Wizard magazine On-Set report? They had something about Lex Luthor whispering something in Superman's ear, and then him screaming.

That was NOT in the movie.

How about stabbing Supes in the back with Kryptonite and them telling him to "Fly"? Does that ring a bell?

Also, the greatest homage that nobody has mentioned is when Perry, Lois, and Perry are looking over the photos "It's a bird.. it's a plane, it's..." Clark: "You wanted to see me Chief?" CLASSIC! Classic I tell you.

Also, other discussions can be wrapped up about the whole Richard White thing, because Richard White was written to be the human version of Superman. Adventerous, dependable, able to fly, honest, all American. Exactly what Lois wanted, except for the fact that he isn't Superman. This was covered in Singer's video blog.

In your opinion what scene was missing or should have gone differently?

IMHO, in the roof top bank robbery scene after the robber fires the gun at Superman's eye, I think the crook should have thrown the gun at Superman. Then Superman, in full homage to the old t.v. series, should have dogged the gun.

I am also upset that they did not show how the visit to Krypton was physically and emotionally isolating for Clark. He was gone for 5 years! They ended up making Clark/Superman out to be a love sick stalker, rather than an isolated soul reaching out to Lois.

I would have also liked to see more farmboy Kent. His momma loves him! At least show a scene of her cooking him a meal or something. Taking care of him after his return. Carrying him to bed. Making some chicken soup. I dunno.

Well, the Wizard preview made it seem like what Lex said was supposed to be "Top Secret." Lot's of us guessed that the remark would be something like "Jason is your son" or something along those lines.

i saw zod too, it was there. I liked when Perry calls the cellphone pics "iconic".... they were the covers of Action Comics #1 and Superman #1.

That woulda been funny, but it mighta killed the moment

Cut scenes so far i've noticed:
-Krypton
-Clark in barn with newspaper
-Young clark with crystal/Ship
-Clark overlooking suitcase with suit under a picture
-Close up shot of SM1 father picture
-Extended scene with martha in living room where the suit was in a basket
-Ben hubbard scenes
-Teaser shot of superman's head rising (side) and you see the S curl while
background looked like DP
-Janitor closet change
-lex whisper scene
-alley shirt rip
-shirt rip to white shirt?

EDIT:
-Clark outside with shovel in white shirt thinking and lowering his head

These are all i can think of from photos and teasers, some from decriptions. Possibly there might be also a few more cuts here and there to the scenes in the film. If anyone remembers some i might have omitted, let me know!
Also keep in check www.supermanhomepage.com as they will have a full report with pictures and screencaps of the missing scenes.

-shirt rip to white shirthttp://www.

This is either one of the following:

-He forgot his suit and then had to go back to the janitor's closet to get it. This explains the janitor scene getting cut.

-The shirt rip scene always looked CGI, they either used CGI to put it in later because of the previous cut scene or it was the plan all along to CGI the shirt.
