Jon Schnepp says the Matt Reeves Batman movie will most likely be a reboot with Affleck passing the cowl to Nightwing.
How is it a reboot? Apologies for getting technical, but a reboot is defined as the following:
In serial fiction, to reboot means to discard all continuity in an established series in order to recreate its characters, timeline and backstory from the beginning.
If it's just a passing of the cowl, that isn't a reboot. Continuity wouldn't be discarded or characters recreated. It also wouldn't refer to the film in which the torch passing takes place, meaning Reeves'
Batman movie starring Affleck wouldn't be the reboot, to use it as the misnomer it is, but
Nightwing would be. Even then, if it's called
Nightwing, I wonder how far into the transition Dick Grayson would be. The Batman is a role or a symbol. It can be taken on by multiple people. Bruce Wayne is a person/character. Dick Grayson is a person/character. If a new actor were to become Bruce Wayne's Batman in a new franchise, like Bale to Affleck, that is a reboot. If a new character (Dick) becomes Batman after a previous character (Bruce) resigns/dies, then it is not a reboot.
So, yeah, not sure how reboot is the correct word here.
