Assassin´s Creed III - Part 1

I'd like to see the return of the platform stuff. If they wanted, they could easily do similar tomb/platform stuff. There’s been people in the Americas far longer than just the 1600s (several other expeditions, Native Americans, Vikings, etc). Sure, they’d have to take large liberties and venture into the more fantastical, but there’s enough history there (even in the 150 years of American colonization at that point) to adequately justify such locations.

And that doesn’t mean the locations have to be enormous buildings, but like in the last one or two AC games, they could be networks of caves with some man-made structures (bridges, ledges, etc) sprinkled throughout.

If they can make us believe there are giant underground Assassin/Templar lairs in Italy, they can do the same here. This game is a work of fiction. People like to glaze over that because they use real people.

This game really has reengaged me to the series. I was burnt out after Revelations, but this looks to be a breath of fresh air in what was starting to become a stagnant franchise.

Their model for how they did this should become a model for other game devs. They fed off the old/existing engine and gameplay mechanics for a couple of years, tweaking here and there, and adding to the story. In the meantime, a substantial team branched off to create the "next-gen," while using the ongoing games as feedback on what to fix/keep.

I felt the same way,I love the series But by Revelations something about it made me feel burnt out and not excited for it,First game in the series I rented and did not play it too much like the rest,Once I passed the game I returned it and didn't even play online!!!!

I had not burnt out on the series, but I felt had the next game been another expansion game, I'd have not really cared about when AC III came out. However, both Brotherhood and Revelations were good enough additions to hold me over until the real finale.

Yea i have no problem with the little side games while the next numbered entry is worked on. I mean i rather of had Brotherhood and Revelations than nothing at all.

Yup. Ill be getting this:

True, but it's far easier to swallow ancient underground labyrinths in cities that have literally millennia of civilization to draw from. I can believe that somebody built elaborate mechanical traps in ancient Italy and the Near East, or the Middle Ages and Renaissance. It's nearly impossible to believe that such a technology existed anywhere in the New World for centuries prior to 1776, other than in the empires of Mesoamerica and South America.

And with that snippet about a Mayan Lost Temple DLC pack, that may very well be their angle here ---- the "ancient civilization" that may be hiding deep beneath the colonial towns of New York and Boston could be Mayan in origin. Which is still not part of the historic record, but at least *is* a credible possibility. And it could easily tie in with a fictional read of the whole Mayan 2012 Apocalypse thing that seems to play a role in Desmond's "Truth."

Anyway, that 50 Things You Should Know was a compelling read. I'm very glad to hear about the attention to detail they're paying not only to the Americans and Redcoats, but to the Mohawks as well. I hope Connor gets to spend a pretty good amount of time with the tribe.

I was also intrigued to read that the developers recognize that Ben Franklin spent most of the years of the Revolution in France instead of America. I firmly believe that Ubisoft already plans to have AC3 spinoffs that carry the action to Paris for the era of Robespierre and Napoleon. Maybe we'll even catch a glimpse of Franklin at Louis XVI's court in this game, sorta like AC2 previewed ACB's Rome (i.e., the Vatican).

I dunno, I mean, we’re still talking about 150 years worth of European colonization. That’s a lot of time. They could also take and run with the fact that exploration of the Americas did not start with Jamestown in the 1600s. The Vikings were there in 990AD. If the platform sections HAVE to be “secret, old, decrepit locations” I could see them tossing an old Viking fort hidden in a cave system into the game, as well as the Mayan stuff you mentioned.

Like I mentioned in a previous post, the platforming sections don’t even have to be technologically advanced. Like the 50 Things list states, while Europe was built with rock and iron, the colonies were primarily wood and brick. You can still have interesting platform sections while keeping the design atheistic and technological limitations of the time and place intact. Instead of vast cathedrals, use caves and caverns. Instead of a series of iron frames to jump back and forth on, use fallen trees and rock outcroppings or rope bridges. Instead of showing an elaborate mechanical pulley system using steel and chains, use a simple counterweight system using rocks and rope.

And to be completely honest, I don’t even LIKE the overly exaggerated stuff in these games (like that MASSIVE raising platform in the island tower in Revelations - ug). I’d much rather something more subtle akin to what I mentioned in the previous paragraph.

On another note, I’m replaying AC2, and I noticed how they changed up Ezio’s voice as the game progresses. He starts out with a more high-pitched, childish voice, but as the game goes on/Ezio ages, it gets deeper and more somber. VERY nice touch. Never noticed that before.

Hi guys, I’m new to the forum. I thought this game was going to focus on America as the good guys, preaching about the mighty USA and stuff like that, but with every info that has been released so far I see that I was wrong. I’m a history kinda guy and I like the colonial setting and with every detail the developers are putting I’m even more pumped for the game now.

I’m glad to see the Mayan DLC in the collector’s edition though; a game set at the period of fusion between two cultures would’ve been something pretty special because of all the history behind it (violence, love, etc). I was a little disappointed that they didn’t go with the Spanish conquest of the Americas route when setting a game in the new world. As someone else pointed out there were civilizations far more complex and powerful around South and Central America before the European colonization. I thought a story featuring a Spanish soldier of the time bringing the assassins fight to the new world would have been more fitting story (didn’t Altair and Ezio visited Spain in some of the spinoff games?)

Still the game is looking more awesome each day!

why does the platform sections have to be made by the people who currently inhabit those landds. I mean there is a first civiliazation that could have built it.

yeah well in this case this assassin's still hunting Templar's, their just on both sides of the battle. lol the thing Ithing is it would have been funny if he can just get both sides of a small group of Templar's of each side in a dark or foggy area and have them fight it out and watch them kill each for his own entertainment or to spark infihting among them . lol he doesn't have to work so hard since their on both sides and they are going to be screwing the others over any way. just little misdirection.....

here's something some thing which I 'm guessing was imspired from the last few video's where the dev's said why they didn't bother with japan. News
You Don’t Want An Assassin’s Creed: Japan

Assassin’s Creed games can be set in any place at any moment of history. For a time, fans thought the clues in the early games ensured that Assassin’s Creed II or maybe Assassin’s Creed III would be set in Japan, the player’s assassin taking on the role of a ninja or other great martial artist.

source: kotaku & GI

on the kotaku article . I my self wouldn't have minded japan it would have been cool to seen what spin the Assassin´s Creed franshise would have on it. But two thing's 1) I guess would have been two obvious for the dev's and they wanted to go a different direction. and 2)now that they made the characters the character of Desmond just doesn't have any Japaneses ancestry running in his blood stream.

it's like that thing where every hero you create must have a sword. if you bother to make him have a melee weapon. heck I was asked that as made a story where I had arch angel have a melee weapon and I went with twin sickle's. and some asked me why not a sword. I said it's just to obvious and been done too often for any one you want to make you main hero for a story. in other words I felt it was unoriginal to me. I'm guess that's what was running through their head's here on that issue.

it can be done with another character.

Welcome!

I'm curious, you say a story revolving around a conquistador would be more fitting...how so? I agree that it is a period in history that would be cool to see in a game, but I don't think it'd work well for a third AC game.

Setting it during the American revolution makes the most sense, IMO. For one, each AC game takes place further along in history, closer to 2012 conspiracy the game is centered around, which would make going backwards in time for a Mayan/Spanish game to be a bad move.

Secondly, your comment about the conquistadors bringing the fight with the Templars to the new world...how do you imagine that would work? I ask because it was the Mayans versus the conquistadors...having both assassins and Templars coming to central America together doesnt really seem like a dramatic story, or at least not nearly as dramatic as the assassins and Templars in their trenches, fighting for control over a new country trying to claim its independence. The Revolution was a true cross roads for not just America, but the world. It helped usher in the French revolution, as well as the fall of the British empire as it had been for hundreds of years. Can you imagine how different the world would be if England had won? THAT is a time period that the assassins and templars would really want to control, IMO.

Welcome to the forum! :)

Yeah, I must say I was *very* (pleasantly) surprised by the news of DLC set (apparently) in Mayan ruins....I'm wondering if it's still supposed to be in the 1770s, though. That's a *looooong* way away from colonial America, and I can't help but wonder how (and why) Connor would go so far away from his home.

Makes me wonder if there's more DLC/main game maps that are set there....maybe it's a Desmond thing, set in 2012 to tie in with the overhyped apocalypse scenario.

why does the platform sections have to be made by the people who currently inhabit those landds. I mean there is a first civiliazation that could have built it.

There wasn't a whole lotta building (at all) from Native American cultures, pre-Columbus. And the pre-Columbus European settlers/explorers left almost nothing to indicate they'd even been here, to the point that scholars still hotly debate whether or not there was any European/Asian/African contact at all prior to 1492. And the European settlers after Columbus, as that GI article pointed out, rarely built anything to last. Yes, New York and Boston were settled in the early 1600s, but almost nothing remained of the original settlements in 1776. Americans were (and are) a very transitory people.

That being said, I think Spider-Who is probably spot on about the same platform dynamic being there, but in a makeshift colonial frontier motif that would look contemporary to the rest of Connor's world.

Or maybe Ubisoft is going to the *other* extreme, and making platforming that isn't ancient at all --- or at least, doesn't look ancient. Maybe Connor discovers secret lairs of the progenitors (or whatever the hell Minerva's group is actually called)...

Also, the "Why You Don't Want AC Japan" article sums up my thoughts. While I trust that Ubisoft could do an outstanding job with any setting in any time period, I *didn't* want to see them move the franchise to medieval Japan or WWII or the modern world....the most overused and overabused milieus in all of gaming. Even with Ubisoft's great aesthetics and attention to historical detail, such settings have "BEEN THERE, DONE THAT, ENOUGH ALREADY" painted in giant flashing neon green letters all over 'em.

Minerva's people are the called the First Civilization which was the point of my post. They could have built tombs of such like the one under the Coliseum in AC:B as a way of platforming for Conner.
