Avatar: The Legend Of Korra - Part 5

I like the idea of an orphan being the next avatar as for an explanation for why he was never identified. But, have the story start with him at least a little older than Korra was at the start of her series. Have him already doin things of questionable morality. I envision like a Cade Skywalker type character. Knew he was the avatar at a young age, somehow gets orphaned and lost in the world and commits certain crimes and stuff, like bounty hunting. There would have to be some sort of catalyst that starts the story and reveals his identity eventually.

Well if Spirit of Earth ever gets made I'm up for "tweaking" Rey's character a little. But I think part of his charm is that he's so rooted in his life (opposed to Aang and Korra who realized they were the Avatar at a young age) really adds depth to his character, and to his reasoning for not wanting to be the Avatar. To him, his life is set. He has a surrogate family, people who trust him, and a purpose. To have that uprooted because others believe "the world needs an Avatar" makes him a more sympathetic character in my eyes.

Just my opinion.

I think that KORRA ALONE worked on the same level of ZUKO ALONE from A:TLA. If the show had more episodes to work with we'd have gotten more like it in LEGEND OF KORRA.

The last episode was fantastic and beautiful. I'm so happy this show took the time to show us Korra's physical recovery and is writing the season around her mental recovery. It's great seeing this show take its time.

There was one shot of korra bending in front of a backdrop of stars. It's one of the most beautiful images in the series so far (and that's saying something).

It was great seeing more of Katara. Of course I'm excited for Toph, but that reveal was ruined by the trailer.

One question: since when did Korra's family live in a palace? We've only ever seen them live in a little hut. I guess they've just really developed the southern water tribe since season 2.

Well I would think that the rehabilitation of The Avatar would be handled by the White Lotus and they seem to be a group with some resources, so I am guessing that Korra would be given what ever she needed and be made as comfortable as possible. Plus, in case of other threats like the Red Lotus or whatever they would want her secure as well, since she was incapacitated to such a high degree at first. And isn't Korra's family connected to the government of the South? Her father was an important general and her Uncle was head of the Tribe. Now her cousins lead it, so I am sure Korra's parents are doing okay these days.

Mad Ones: When Korra defeated Unavaatu she noted that the Northern and Southern Water Tribes agreed that Tonraq (her father) should be their leader. Because of that, they now live in the palace.

Was it her father, or the cousins? When they freed P'li I thought her cousins were now in charge?

They could be...or they could be running the North Pole while Tonraq is in the South Pole...either way, Tonraq rules the south, hence why he's in the palace.

Ah, right, sorry, I forgot that Tonraq was originally from the North and not the South. So he's in charge of the South and it's her cousins in the North.

The cousins were shown ruling the North (which doesn't really make sense). Was Korra's father not the chief of the Southern Water Tribe before season 2? I'll just assume that the palace is a result of the redevelopment of the South as a consequence of the events of Book 2. It just seems weird that Korra's family would live lavishly lol

Nothing is showing up

I think a very interesting angle to take would be maybe keeping the identity of the new avatar a secret when the show first airs. Not necessarily to the audience but in the story. Make it an avatar that didn't grow up under the eye of the white lotus it any other kind of real upbringing or training. Make him kinda like really rebellious and even resentful of his duty as the avatar and make that a big arc for the character. Plus, if his identity is unknown it could make for a story where the avatar had been missing for a number of years and finding him and introducing him is the whole point of the first season. I think id make it to where they find out he's already self trained in most forms of bending and pretty bad ass. Give him earth nomad tats where he stowed away with the air nomads for a number of years to learn airbending but jetted the first chance he got. Show flashbacks of him living with badger moles or discovering his different styles of bending living on the streets as an orphan which could also explain his absence for so long. There just endless ways you could go with it be its a god damn utter shame if this entire franchise dies

I like it!

To develop more: Pare the cast down to mostly just him, his traveling partner the antagonists and some extras. I'd actually flip his skills, and make him an incredible Earthbender, but not really any good with the rest, but then he goes into the Avatar state, and he and Korra, the only Avatar that state contacts now, wreck shop.

Have him deal with some real honest to goodness spirit world threats, along with some well intentioned foils who turn out to, twist, be the good guys and he's actually been helping the bad guys all along.

Well...my Spirit of Earth story has a lot of those threads honestly. His crew in the first book really is just him and his first companion, who is a spirit wolf named Swift. And he has trouble with Firebending because of events from his past.

How Rey (my Avatar) gets the Avatar State actually is an essential part of my story, and his conversations with Korra were some of the best scenes to write.

Spirit of Earth has a massive storyline dedicated to the Spirit World and the spirits within them. I won't spoil it, but there are some intense spirit battles, and it's not because they're evil...

And though I won't say that Rey helps the bad guys, I won't say he hurts them either. A continuous thread in Spirit of Earth is that Rey's victories are almost immediately cancelled out by the foresight of my villains. The scale of my villainous group is quite massive, and it plays out on many different levels in the series.

That sound cool?

Not to sound condescending or anything but it would sound a lot cooler with some actual story details.

It does sound cool... it sounds like we have some similar thought processes!

Maybe I should work on a Firebending Avatar series, lol!

Well i'm trying not to spoil it Maximus! lol. I really would like some of you to read it and tell me what you think. I really believe that Spirit of Earth could be the next Avatar series, and I'm actually working on art (and an intro video!) to try and garner support for it.

But in the interest of being fair...I'll give you this kind of spoiler. At the end of Book One...Rey becomes the most wanted person in the world. Like in the bad way.

Dr. Cosmic: Thank you! And you totally should! Spirit of Earth started out as a two chapter story with a summary for the rest of the book to show my ideas. But then people nudged me to keep writing, so I did! And now Spirit of Earth is complete, and I couldn't be prouder.

Here's the link if you would like to read!

I questioned if Kuvira would or could occupy the Fire Nation and someone told me they don't think anyone is stupid or naive enough to do such a thing. But realistically speaking, all Kuvira would have to do is have possession of the Fire Lord and the FN would have no other choice but to surrender to her needs. And such an opportunity MIGHT present itself in tomorrow's episode. Tomorrow's episode is the Coronation of Wu and the Fire Lord will be present. And we all know something is going to happen lol.

Yeah, that makes no sense. Having a possession of a leader does not make a nation bow to you. It gives you leverage, but no nation is so servile to their liege lord that they will bend backwards to a foreign invader to ensure they aren't hurt.

I think it's too early for Kuvira to start expanding. She so far still needs to centralize power in the Earth Kingdom and deal with that slacker prince. However I could see how she handles some kind of territorial dispute with the Fire Nation as indicative of what she ultimately plans re: Possible Earth Kingdom expansion.

Another awesome episode!!! Toph hasn't changed one but and still makes me grin ear to ear like when she was only 10 years old. And the balls on Kuvira!!! What Varrik is up to is really interesting as well. This season is shaping up so nicely. I just wish we could get more than one episode a week. Doesn't make any damn sense
