Avatar: The Legend Of Korra - Part 4

I don't think I'll ever forget the last moment of the finale.

All the feels man. The feels. This is arguably the best season out of both series. I'm glad they changed Korra's personality this season and leveled her out. Her hot-headedness dragged down the other seasons. She and Asami are getting close and I, like some of you, got a lesbian vibe from their last conversation but I'm cool w/ it either way. They really do seem to be good friends and I enjoy watching them on-screen.

Bolin stepping up was cool and I liked the direction/deflection they took w/ the metalbending. What I didn't understand was why they kept telling Korra that her chains were platinum. I know this is a kids show but what does it being platinum have to do w/ anything? It's still metal. Had they established on the show that platinum is the furthest metallic element from Earth and that's why you can't bend it then maybe but otherwise it shouldn't matter. It's from the Earth so Korra should still be able to bend it. Heck even Toph was able to be the meteorite Sokka found, so if she can bend a freakin' space rock, Korra can still bend platinum.

Zaheer's plan was sound until it was fully revealed. Were they seriously going to kidnap Korra as a child, make her go into the Avatar state and murder her? Sounds jack'd up. I still don't know how they were caught back then considering how formidable they were. Seeing Zaheer fly was badass though. He's taken Ozai's spot as best villain for me. Would have been great to see Korra remove his airbending like Aang did Ozai.

You have to keep in mind that Korra just learned metal bending so it's possible that she that bending platinum requires more advanced metalbending training.

Also have to remember that Zaheer wasn't an Airbender the first time around which made him and his friends more formidable.

And yeah were they going to force a 5yr old Korra into the Avatar State and kill her? Or were they just gong going to raise her and keep her from fully realized? Did that change due to her being grown ?

They established in the first season with the giant mechs that platinum has been refined well enough that there aren't enough impurities for metalbenders to use to bend it.

Oh, ok. I didn't remember that. Still doesn't make sense though.

I love that Bolin got some time to shine. It makes sense he's a lava bender since a lot of his technique is based on firebending (since he would have learned it from Mako). Ever since his fight at his mover premiere last season (which is one of the best fight sequences of both TLA and LOK), he's become my favorite character.

More likely they wanted to kidnap Korra so they could indoctrinate her at a young age. They would have made the Avatar preserve balance by eliminating all four nations rather than preserving them. But when they failed, the only option was to eliminate the Avatar permanently.

They seemed to have this plan all worked out though, like years in the making. So perhaps it was a failsafe plan if they couldn't control the Avatar, they'd eliminate her. I'm not sure how Unalaq fit into the plan though. A dead (young) Korra would've kept Vaatu in prison but that's just me overthinking things.

If you can't control the avatar the next best thing is to try to become one yourself.

Unalaq was the one who planned to have Zaheer and co. kidnap Korra but he covered up his involvement when they failed. His plans to become the Dark Avatar were his own.

Was I the only one that saw a moment between Korra and Asami in the last moments of the episode that could be spun into something? I've always thought Bolin should be the male lead to end up with Korra or Asami, but if the show comes back as a show only available online, then maybe they could really blow the doors off with a relationship never seen in mainstream Western animated programming for young people? I thought Bolin might be the end game for Asami, but Opal being introduced makes that ship to have seemingly sailed. I know it's a truly off chance, but does anyone else think that's a possibility?

Honestly, I didn't pick up on that but looking back I can see it. I don't think it will ever amount to anything other than subtext, but I think it would be absolutely brilliant if they went in that direction.

I liked the Red Lotus's ideology quite a bit. While they were too anarchistic, the show clearly presented monarchs and nations to be very problematic. The Earth Queen needed to be removed for the betterment of the poor. However, since Korra is a hero she's stuck in the middle of seeing what changes need to be made while unwilling to accept the huge amounts of lost lives to do it. It's definitely a grey area.

I wonder if someone can answer a question: how was Korra able to enter the Avatar State if she has no connection to her past lives? It's powered by the skills and knowledge of all the past avatars, is it not?

Would have been cool if Korra's metal bending skills went pro during avatar state.

After seeing the powered up fire lord hold his own against avatar state fully trained Ang. Then seeing Tenzin take on Zeeheer(and beat him imo), I was certain they would need to have the 4 members take on Korra. Then I realized they would divide them amongst team avatar. Giving him flight helped, but just barely.

When Korra tried to remove the vines she used the Avatar state then, so I can suppose she has access to the power, but not the refined knowledge of it's use that previous Avatars had as a trump card. Wan had the ability to use the Avatar state and he was the first, right?

That's an interesting question.

I think that in conjunction with the demystifying of bending(origins) that happened for me last season tell me that the ideas that happened between this and last season should have switched. Save the spirit world story for the end. That alone would have made the return of the air benders more interesting(special) personally.

A new role for the Air Natiin is sort of like the reconecting to the Spirit world in that both are stories that beg for greater exploration. I hope the Air Nomads as "Jedi" isn't glossed over the way the spirit stuff was at this season's start.

Oh, ok. I didn't remember that. Still doesn't make sense though.

In the first show, they showed that Toph could sense the impurities in metal and that's why she could bend it. Then, Asami's dad made those mechs and said that they were pure metal, so no impurities and thus, making them harder to defeat.

Yeah, when he merged with Rava. So perhaps the Avatar State is just as much drawn from the spirit world as it is the previous avatars.

i just finished watching....

- wow. just WOW!

- wait is this the last ep of the season? :( does this mean bye bye Korra? (since Nick effectively kicked her out to the curb)

- Jinora! who looks like Aang! with brown eyes :funny:

- mercury poisoning-- ohh clever. couldnt Korra have figured out what that was and got rid of it out of her system? i would understand if metal benders still need other benders to heal each other.

BUT

-- why is platinum suddenly an exception to being bendable by a metal bender? last i checked that thing is still metal too.

The Avatar State and connection with past lives are separate things. The Avatar State is tapping into Raava's power. The past lives lived on in Raava. Unavaatu destroyed Raava which erased the connection with those past lives. Raava was reborn within Vaatu obviously no longer has the connection with those past lives.

I hope Raava basically just reset and as she grows stronger again, the past lives will start to come back little by little.

Man this has been a bloody series....for a Nick show. What's the body count so far? Seven? That's quite the leap from TLA's 2 (?) With the amount of 'mature' content this season, subtle or otherwise, I wonder if it was a least part of the reason Nick took this off tv.

Subtext is as far as that's going to go I would think. Plus, is it even reciprocated?

That would be a major progression for an american animated series, and Avatar is the only series I can see doing it. Even if it isn't reciprocated, making Asami possibly bi would be a huge thing.
