Avatar: The Legend Of Korra - Part 6

Season 2 is so underrated :(

I don't know if it's underrated as much as it is...misunderstood. I think it got a bad rap because of the year+ wait for it. That when we DID get it, some things just didn't feel the same. I'll fully admit, it was my least favorite Korra season. I didn't like how they handled the relationships (oh the irony with that now...). Unalaq was underdeveloped, and the ending still requires some explanation.

However, there were good things that fans happily admit freely. The Dark Spirits were epic. "Beginnings" was a highlight of the series (not season, series). And there were some really cool bending fights.

I reviewed the art book for season 2 for a site I worked for. In the preface, both Bryan and Mike noted how hard it was to make Book Two. It stressed them to the limit in some ways, and you can tell that in bits of the show.

Everyone is going to have a least favorite season. If Book Two had some things happen differently...who knows what could've happened. At this point, we should appreciate it for what it was. If you liked it, great! If not...ok.

Well said although I like all seasons almost equally, if I really had to chose a least favorite it could be either season 1 or season 4. Its just surprising to me how many people hate S2 despite the other seasons having a similar amount of problems(sometimes completely opposite flaws so maybe its just a matter of taste).

Exactly! That's what it boils down to, is personal taste. True, there were external factors that fans didn't like, such as the new animators for the first half of the season, but the rest is really taste.

For me, it's not really an insult that Season 2 is my least favorite, as it shows how good (in my opinion) the other three seasons were, flaws and all. For me, it goes: 3, 1, 4, and then 2.

I like them all equally as well. I understand if the animation in the first half of book 2 turned some people off. Some parts were good and some were noticeably not but it didn't affect the story for me. If I had to rank my favorites I'd go 2, 4, 3, 1. The book 2 finale was my favorite, I loved the giant spirit fight in Yue Bay.

Really? Fascinating. And there you go, here's a person who loves Season 2. Just goes to show how diverse the fanbase is, which is one of the reasons I love being a part of it.

For me, I actually didn't notice the change in animation style until I read reviews and saw comments about it. For me, I didn't like the pacing of certain things, and some of the things Korra said and did really felt off-character. But I did enjoy parts of season 2. And that final battle (though slightly unresolved) was truly epic.

I guess my biggest complaint about the whole thing was that Book 4 came out so soon. Didn't give Book 3 a chance to sink in. I always tend to overlook it. We had over a year for Book 1 to sink in, a little less than a year for Book 2, then about a month for Book 3.

oh yeah, my biggest beef with Book 4 (among certain other things) was the rush to get it out. It all but negated the ending of three, which was easily one of the biggest endings in the series, and then BOOM...she's walking again.

Didn't feel the respect for Korra in the last two book in how rushed they were.

Yeah its kinda jarring how the gap between the end of Book 3 and beggining of Book 4 is the longest in the show and yet the gap in which the seasons were aired was the shortest. Then again I watched Book 2, 3 and 4 in the last 2 weeks so that didn't affect me lol

Maybe season 4 should have been season 2, the gap would have made more sense and Korra's depression could be attributed to Amon taking away her powers, that assuming Aang didn't give them back to her at the end of season 1.

yeah I think that's the other thing about Season 2 that people didn't like. It had to rebound from some of the things they did in the season 1 finale and had to top it. Tall order.

A lot of fans think it would've been better for the series (or at least the first two seasons) if Korra didn't get her bending back immediately.

Yeah probably the biggest criticism that everybody agrees is how Nick kinda sabotaged the series by asking for standalone seasons instead of an actual series with multiple seasons which was a big restrain for the writers so its understandable that they had to make those decisions.

Also, the having less episodes forced them to rush on some stories, while extending some way too long. This especially hurt season 2 in my opinion.

I won't say they sabotaged it by having four individual season arcs, as I think that was truly one of the strengths of Korra. A strength that helped make it truly different than TLA. But, having certain seasons rushed, an episode all but cut because of budget (which resulted in remembrances) and a constantly changing airing schedule...THAT was sabotage.

I mean that it felt like sabotage 'cause obviously the first 3 seasons were not concieved at the same time which made the progression not seem as natural as TLA due to the writers giving conclusive endings(like giving Korra her powers back immediatly) in case they couldn't make another season. I do love that they were different challenges but I would have liked them in a different order for example Kuvira was a great villain but for a final season it didn't feel as big, she probably would have worked better as a villain in season 2 and Vaatu would have been great as a final villain considering the stakes were so high with the spirits arc.

I can agree with a lot of that. I think if the order could've been modified it might've done better. Vaatu did really seem like an end boss, unlike Kuvira who was really a localized threat. Though one with a giant mecha colossus!!! lol.

All we can hope for is that a third series gets made and that it's not on Nickelodeon and that it'll get the respect and attention it deserves.

YEAH!! I'm REALLY hoping that there's a "reaction scene" where everyone else finds out about Korra/Asami. My guess:

-Tenzin, Bolin, and the Airbender kids are initially surprised/confused (but ultimately accepting).
-Suyin and Pema are instantly supportive.
-Lin doesn't really care either way, beyond a note that she "wasn't surprised."
-Mako, goes off to ponder how the only two girls that he's ever dated ended up dating EACH OTHER/revaluate his life.

It was inevitable really. The TLA comics are very popular, and given how many fans wanted a LOK comic series to continue things? I'm not surprised.

As for Korrasami? Well, I'm interested to see how they handle this. They mentioned that not much time has passed since they left for the Spirit World. I'd say maybe a week tops? Anyway, I'm intrigued to see how much they play up the relationship, which they said they would focus on.

As in all things, we'll have to wait and see. Especially since we don't know when it'll come out.

But hey, Korra LIVES!!!! lol

Damn you Nickelodeon, why can't you just give us continuous DTVs!?!

I actually quite love season 2. I love how mythological it gets, even if it starts with Korra acting kinda strange (I couldn't believe that she would ditch Tenzin and her father in favor of Unalaq).

My least favorite season is 4, easily. Kuvira was kinda boring, and the story mas meh.

What happened to that comic book continuation that had been announced? There hasn't been another mention of that in a long while.

As for what has been being discussed about season 2, I realy disagree with the notion that it was underapreciated. It repeated character and relationship arcs from Season 1, had the most boring of all the Korra villains and excalated the power levels towards such a high level that makes subsequent threats look much smaller in comparison. Best thing about it was the episode about the first Avatar, which was among the best episodes in the franchise. I honestly couldn't find much enjoyment in the Dark spirits "epicness", Vaatu spoke with the same kind of voice as the aliens from The Simpsons and was way too one-dimensional. I know it's hard to make a completely evil villain interesting, but it's already been done plenty of times with the likes of Sauron and Voldemort. No need to make something that felt like it was more at place in a parody cartoon.

Still happening, Mike DiMartono is working on his novel and the comic at the same time. Maybe Dark Horse will give us an update at Comic Con.

I remember when they first announced it, they were talking Nov this year anyway.
