I'm genuinely sorry to hear that and I understand what you mean. But the thing is, I think Marvel NEEDED to make a film like this. We needed to have an "Empire Strikes Back," a film that raises the stakes and shows that, sometimes, the heroes lose.

IW ends on a note that, taken at face value, tells the audience that our heroes have lost but, come on, we know this isnt it and I would think there are a lot of kids and parents out there who know that this isnt the end.

Yup. Empire Strikes Back, still widely regarded as the best Star Wars movie and one of the best action blockbusters of all time, was the first thing I texted a friend of mine who was on the fence about seeing this in theaters because of how light and frivolous the MCU films tend to be. They needed to go for it and good on them for doing so.

So is this Thor's best appearance in any movie ever? He was at the top of his game in Ragnarok, but they might've just outdone that which I did NOT expect!

I’d still give the edge to Ragnarok but this was a Thor that felt like a god imo.

Agreed. He kept saying "It was the only way" to Tony for a reason.

Yeah I noticed that, I think we’ll see it play out in Avengers 4.

Do you think aswell with Thanos knowing who Stark was and what he said about knowledge that in the first Avengers something went down when he flew up into the void?

But I do think Marvel could have made the fact it was a 2 parter to non-fans more apparent.

Sorry but no. If they did that, they couldn't have gotten the EPIC reactions that we all saw from the general theater audiences. Advertising it as 'Part 1' all but screams, 'Don't worry, this is half a movie, everything will be fine.' The way Marvel and The Russos kept everyone guessing on this one was masterful. They're playing the long game. When kids realize A4 is only 1 year away, they'll start counting the days.

Honestly, everyone complains about how predictable blockbusters are and how everything gets spoiled in trailers and there's no risks taken in these movies. And then Marvel pulls this off. It's pretty glorious if you ask me.

Which makes me appreciates Disney even more. They had the balls to do the unthinkable and for us fans and general audiences who aren't kids, this is their way of saying thank you for sticking with us for the past 10 years.

Disney gave the OK to Gareth Edwards suggesting that all the protagonists of ROGUE ONE die, let Rian Johnson pretty much do his own thing with THE LAST JEDI and presumably had no objection to the strong racial themes raised in BLACK PANTHER....in other words I'm not surprised that they didn't raise any issues with INFINITY WAR basically being an over 2 hour homage to the first 10 child shattering minutes of Transformers The Movie '86 :woot:.

Cannot agree more with you man. That's why I found the movie refreshing.

I am, however, perversely looking forward to all the dumb overwrought news items about 'Infinity War Parent Backlash???' on Monday :D

I had to explain to the group of people in the row behind me that one of the stones can turn back time, and that the surviving Avengers would use it in the next movie to bring back the dead. They were adults and angry. They had no idea going in that this was part ONE. And when I explained this to them....they did not jump up and down with joy that their favorite characters would return in a year. They were still mad. Don't misunderstand me....I liked the movie....I'm saying I saw a lot of people upset by it. I'm afraid a whole heck of a lot of people are going to be upset by it and it will get bad word of mouth and not much repeat business. I would like to be wrong about this....but not very optimistic about it.

If they do that they will spoil the movie for everyone that didn't watch the movie first weekend :P

My daughter was extremely excited to go see it. She even already had plans to go see it again Saturday with her cousins. After watching it last night....she doesn't want to go Saturday. And I did explain and have explained again that characters were going to die but would be brought back in the next movie. Knowing her favorite characters would be brought back in a year doesn't matter.....her favorites characters died....she is upset. I see a lot of kids reacting this way.
I know its different but my lil cousins favorite star wars movie is rogue 1. No it didn't have the build up of the Marvel characters. I'm pleased that war came with a cost.

I will be disappointed if the ones that died came back. When Gamora was killed I felt everyone was free game. If they pull the "Oh it didn't matter" crap out of the hat I will be furious. It is the one big criticism that I have for Marvel. Like nothing makes a real impact. Thor lost his eye, he gets a new one for no reason. Civil War imprisons team Cap, "Oh it didn't matter, Scott and Clint are family men". I want some lasting consequence to make me fear for characters. That's why enjoyed this film. I prey to Odin they stick with their guns.

I don't see a scenario where they both would have to die doing it as a pair. Only scenario I can see involving more than 1 dying to reverse it, since there is 1 Gauntlet, would be if all the original Avengers die together wielding the Gauntlet like the GotG did in GotG when they held hands and used the Orb. I could see THAT as an ending and swan song for everyone. But if not that, I only see it being one or the other.

I like the idea of them coming back, if only there's a trade off, so somehow Thor, Tony and Cap give there lives for the new Avengers would be nice.

Tony's one on one with Thanos was more impressive than Strange's in my opinion. BUT Tony was not the only one to draw blood, Thor freaking impaled him and gave him lasting injuries he was hobbling in his next scene.

Thor took him on with all 6 stones and a fully powered Gauntlet and technically won the fight. What Strange and Tony did was child's play, lol Thor did more than the entire roster in two hits.

Yeah Thor owns, back to back appearances in Marvel movies where is UBer powered. HE ACTUALLY DOES ENOUGH TO KILL THANOS
Thor's highlight film will be inexhaustible and we havent even got to the 4th movie yet!!

Something else I forgot, what the hell happened to Scarlet Witches accent?

She's gradually gotten rid of it, which makes sense as she's moved to an English speaking country. In Civil War she had significantly less accent than the heavy one in AoU (where they'd probably never been outside Sokovia before, or at least not outside the neighboring countries), and now she's lived in the US long enough to fully lose the accent.

It comes off as an intentional progress.

I don't think anger was what my audience experienced. Shock definitely was. I had a pretty rowdy crowd all throughout. At the end when the credits started, you could hear a pin drop, LOL! It was kind of awesome.

I definitely was thinking time travel for them to solve it but then my mate was on about something called the soul realm so I wasn’t sure if maybe they’d go down that route instead.

Do you think they should have maybe ended it like IT did when they revealed at the end it was Chapter One? I totally get what you’re saying though about the potential bad word of mouth with some people actually thinking some of there favourite characters are dead. Although I think it will still do big numbers. There is Deadpool 2 out in like 2 weeks so that could maybe have an effect on some repeat business anyway.

Actually if you go back in the comments somebody was saying "Wait until the Americans see the film. It's going to be an apocalypse" or something of these sort. I was confused, but now I get it :)

I get why you're concerned but for what it's worth I can attest to having the exact opposite experience in my theater. The movie ended with the audience erupting in gasps of utter disbelief and then immense applause. I didn't talk to anyone, but everyone was super vocal walking out of the theater and the consensus was generally "Holy **** - what's the next one going to be?!?"

I think it's inevitable that there will be people burned by this approach, but I don't see a Last Jedi level backlash.

Eh I don’t think you’d ever completely get rid but whatever. It wasn’t something that bothered me just amused me.

It was the same in mine, even I was there with my jaw open. I think this film is the most balsy thing the MCU has done.

Man i wish i hadn't read the leaks before going to see the movie. Still the execution of the scenes left me in awe.

I don't know. Some people never lose their accent even after 20 or 30 years in another country.

I liked her Sokovian accent. It made her different from all the other Americans and made her feel more European.

If T'Challa lived in America too, would he eventually start to sound like Chadwick Boseman?

Yes. I mean the subsequent marketing for the next movie will have to be a mia-culpa/triumphant return to true Superhero form.

But that particular comic story line doesn't bode well for the next movie. Don't get me wrong it ends--ok.

IW was 2 1/2 hours of the first couple of pages of Infinity Guantlet #1. The Avengers response was pretty meak in the following issues.

So, yeah. It's a precarious situation that they are in. Hopefully they can pull it off and the Russos can punch up the ending of IW to a satisfying level.

Oh for goodness sake. If people are angry that they weren't pre-warned that their favourite fictional characters are going to die then they really shouldn't be allowed to watch movies... or possibly leave the house. People need to get a grip. If I can get over Matthew Crawley unexpectedly snuffing it in the CHRISTMAS DAY SPECIAL of Downton Abbey then they'll get over this.

Sorry, but if you're a parent that's upset with the ending of IW, you're story comprehension skills need some help.

I mean, when you have a literal macguffin called the "time stone" that reverses time AND you know there is an Avengers 4 coming out and you STILL don't put 2 and 2 together... sigh.

Society is filled with punk @$$es.

When it ended at my theater....at first utter silence....then muttering of anger and disbelief. As I referred to, the people behind me started cursing and saying they were done "with this ****" because they killed Black Panther. That's when I felt I needed to tell them that it would be undone in the next Avenger movie. It appeased them a little....but there was still anger there.

Most of them will be, IMO. We can basically guarantee the people who disappeared will all come back. Question is, will those who died before that come back? That's the million dollar question.

Nope. The ones killed physically are dead IMO. I was really not expecting Gamora to die. That hit me hard. The way she struggled.....

I'd be curious to see if anyone else has similar experiences because I do think that's going to be the exception and not the norm.

This is one of the risks the movie took: by not making clear it's an effective two-parter (while being a standalone movie in its own right, Thanos' story). It might hit the legs of this movie. In turn, A4 might have a smaller OW but better legs.

Gamora's, Spidey's and Loki's were all terrifically done, all setting the tone at the right points in the movie.
