Avengers vs. X-Men: 2012 Event - Part 1

New Avengers has The Thing. We all know that he makes any book 25% better. So Bendis going from 3% to 28% is quite a feat for him.

:thing: :thing: :thing:

You can make that argument for half their roster. Doesn't change the fact that the book is nothing more than an ego booster for BMB. There's a ton of kiddies that eat that crap up then go on Bendis' Twitter feed and kiss his arse over it.

Hey runaway. That was JOKE. You can tell because I applied an actual number to my theory. Like I'm a scientist or something. Get it?

:thing: :thing: :thing:

I know you were joking about the percentages. I agree that the Thing does make any book better, whether it be a team book or a guest spot. As does Spidey or DD.

Eh, people just hate to hate. Bendis honesty isn't anywhere NEAR as bad as people play him up to be on the hype. It's like a plague around here. You're not cool unless you hate on Bendis. I just reached a point where I stopped caring what other people think. He's not great. His current Avengers title, save the second arc, sucks, but the current New Avengers title has been fantastic since it's inception post-Siege.

Even Avengers Assembled has been decent. And with Thanos showing up at the end of issue 3 it's got me currious about an upcoming solicitation (issue 5 I think) where they claim characters that everyone's been demanding will finally return. Nova and Starlord anybody? Here's hoping.

Did I miss something and Bendis somehow learned how to write an Avengers comic, or do you just have drastically differing tastes from me and a few others?

Avengers, I'm not so sure, but street level characters is what New Avengers is and that's Bendis' strength. Therefor, it equals a decent comic. Would people be complaining if the New Avengers book and cast was called something else? The Marvels or something like that? I'm not sure. I think a lot of people would be happier because it's not Avengers (which is silly, it'd still be the same book) but then people do like to complain about Bendis like their lives depend on it.

I give Bendis credit when he's good. His DD work was outstanding. I thought SIEGE was really good (I feel like I'm in the minority around here with that). I enjoyed the majority of his New Avengers vol 1 work, mostly post Secret Invasion to Dark Reign and on. I liked Dark Avengers a lot.

His body of work this past year has been outright awful. Some of the worst stuff I've seen. His stories seem endless, go nowhere and when they do conclude it's like what was the point of all that? I mean, Hydra breaks Osborn out of jail, combine with remnants of HAMMER to do what exactly? Make the Avengers look bad? The Triune Understanding did a way better job of a smear campaign.

I'm in the same boat as runaway with Bendis.

I've enjoyed stories by him. A lot of them. But he just seems to get fixated on this dumbass characters and never ending storylines about things that I'm pretty sure no one cares about except for Bendis himself.

The Hawkeye/Spider-Woman relationship is a perfect example. I really like both characters, even though it seems most detest Spider-Woman. I still think she's a great character but this "relationship" does her no favors. It's like, what's the point?

All they do is make out all over Avengers Mansion. There's no reason why there's an attraction except Clint thinks she's hot. Clint thinks every super-chick is hot. In Bendis' first Avengers issue (Disassembled pt1) he even said he would bang Viper. When he had an affair with Jan during the awful Chuck Austen run, at least Austen put some motivation behind it. Clint and Jessica just slobber all over each other until random Avenger a or b comes strolling along, "oh you guys are an item?" "yup" then back to the slobbering.

A lot of people most likely wouldn't be reading it if it were called The Marvels or whatever

More like you're not cool unless you hate on Geoff Johns.

It'd have the same content, but it wouldn't be tainting the Avengers franchise with its suckage. :oldrazz:

Also, put me down as someone who thinks splitting mutants and non-mutants into their own separate universes would be stupid.

Did they not do that after the Onslaught saga with the Heroes Reborn universe?

The most recent Osborn plot really was a low point for New Avengers, that I'll give you, though it wasn't anywhere near as bad as his current Avengers work or his dialogue and thought bubbles in Mighty Avengers. The New Avengers aspect of the story was decent but Bendis just failed with what could have been a great revenge arc. You have great characters like Gorgon and Skaar, and while Skaar had a decent showing, Gorgon didn't live up to the greatness of his character. Then you fill out the title with a bunch of other crappy characters no one cares about, like pretty much the rest of the Dark Avengers. Then you take all that and spread it out over 12 issues between two Avengers books and it was just too much. But as I said, of those the New Avengers arc was the better part of it.

And the Spider-Woman/Hawkeye thing is also a blemish, but again, that's in Avengers, not New Avengers.

I can honestly say that I LOVED every issue of the initial New Avengers title for the first two years. The next year or two had good stories but a little dragged out. That was typically my only beef with Bendis, the writing for trade mentality. The relaunched New Avengers was just fantastic and maintained that consistency (in my opinion) until the Osborn arc, which fell on its face a tad, but it's picked back up with these AvsX tie-ins. And going from Immonen to Deodato just makes the artistic side of the book stand out... save Chayklin's portions of the HAMMER/1959 Avengers arc. That was just an eye sore.

New Avengers v1 was amazing and made me an Avengers reader. I thought it was pretty solid till Civil War and then it went downhill from there

The first arc of vol 1 was awful. From Finch making Matt Murdock look like Scott Summers to Spider-Man getting his arm broke by Jigsaw and cringy dialogue like "we don't have time for smartass." A little bit of the mega Avengers fan inside me died that day....

Also, o/t but was the Hype broken for the past day? It was impossible for me to get in the last 24hrs? Anybody else have problems?

as someone who read Avengers from the start of the Busiek/Perez run, Bendis New Avengers made me drop the book

I tried Busiek here and there and nothing about it ever grabbed me. I sorta got into it later, I want to say Johns was writing at the time, just prior to Kang Dynasty, but I got bored maybe an issue or two into that story and dropped it again. Then I tried Austen's arc with Avalon and it was alright. It wasn't until Bendis that I actually began to appreciate and like the Avengers and he's kept me on for, what, seven years now?

Being a bigger fan now though I could probably go back and greater appreciate Busiek and Johns' run. I'd like to read Kang Dynasty now.

Johns' run started right after Kang Dynasty. Busiek's run goes from #1 to #56.

I'm considering picking this up just for how satisfying it'll be to see Cap kicking Gambit's ass. But more likely than not, I'll just flip through it in the shop and see the end results.

McNiven's art looks rough to say the least. It usually looks alot more beautiful than that

What's Gambit doing there I thought he stayed at the school? I thought only Iceman, Rachel and Angel joined up with Scott?

Best not to look for too much connectivity between issues in this event. The complete difference in presentation of the Avengers' assault on Utopia in various different comics told us that.
