Comics Back in Black

The best costume returns. Yay. Still think I can see how/ why this happens. But whatever. Go black costume. Go dark Spidey. Yay and yay.

You're reaching.

Actually, I don't think he's that far off the mark here--except with the Ben Reilly parts. Take a look closely at Joe Q's comments:

And what would the world say if they saw Peter Parker standing next to someone in the black suit? That sure would solve a lot of problems wouldn’t it? Or would it cause more problems than one could suspect? Or could it be the worse, cliché cheat of all time?

I bet you’re dying to know who’s in that costume aren’t you?

Well, let me put it this way, everything that’s happening right now with Spider-Man affects my Spidey story with JMS. I think I can say that this story I’m working on will be a pivotal moment in Spidey’s history.

Yeah, there's a lot of hyperbole here and Joe Q has an annoying habit of jerking everybody's chain. But if the Spider-Man in the Black Costume is an imposter, it:

1. Ties in with "the Other: Evolve or Die" in regards to the creature that was created from Spider-Man's discarded skin and the spiders forming a coocoon. Well, what if, just as Peter "regenerated" after sheding his skin after death (yeah I know, he was DEAD when he molted :whatever:) the "Other," using the DNA from the skin "evolve" into another Peter Parker, who would have all the memories Peter had prior to his "death and rebirth," and is convinced HE'S really Spider-Man. (Yes, it's JMS' version of the Clone Saga with mystical overtones).

2. Ties in with a story JMS once upon a time mentioned he had planned for a future issue of Amazing where Peter Parker is the victim of identity theft. Well, if THIS Black Costumed Spider-Man is an imposter, wouldn't this be a case of identity theft?

3. It ties in with the Unmasking in a way where, because you have two different version of Spider-Man running around, each claiming to be the real one, perhaps this will be part of an effort on Marvel's part to retcon the unmasking--by having people see this Black Costumed Spider-Man running
around and conclude that either Peter was "protecting the real Spidey" or that he lied and pretended he was Spider-Man to seek publicity. Who knows? And

4. It finally ties in with the Spider-Man mini by JMS and Joe Q that is supposively going to "fix" Spidey and bring him closer to what Stan Lee and Steve Ditko envisioned. Seems to me the way to do that is to wrap up the Spider-Totems, the unmasking, and the "Back in Black" stuff all in one feel swoop. At least, that's what I'm guessing.

Well... I was expecting something like... Peter: "Gotcha. The power was the suit, I'm not REALLY Spider-Man."

And then the first unmasked issue of ASM has a scene with Peter, sans costume, shooting webs out of his wrists and clearly BEING Spider-Man. A crowd was there with cameras. It's happened in other titles too. So there goes that theory.

I still agree with the theories that there is going to be a mass mindwipe and everybody forgets that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, even MJ, and that causes him to jump back into the black costume.

Though with Quesada playing his ass backwards Jedi mind tricks on everyone who knows what the hell they're going to do. I just hope they don't bring Reilly back.

JQ said that wouldn't happen but...well, you know. He's JQ.

Ah, but if you have Peter and the "Other" who would basically be JMS' mystical version of the Spider-Man clone, this could be a way for everybody (and not just the public in the comics) to start wondering who is the real Peter Parker all over again. Heck, there's people on this board who are convinced that the real Spidey did in fact die during "the Other: Evolve or Die." Even so, I know about those scenes, and I agree: since there are now people who have seen Peter use his powers outside of his costume, it's kind of hard to go with the "I was pretending to be Spider-Man" excuse. Which is why I'm still leaning a little bit to the mindwipe theory.

Then again, perhaps both theories will happen, first the "Mystical clone" scenario, then their team-up to battle the [insert cosmic menace threating the world] that will be, this time, the very last spider-totem story, followed by the mindwipe.

Like I just told Captivated, SIAT, I'm thinking the "Back in Black" will happen first with the black costumed Spider-Man revealed to be "the Other" from the second web coocoon/nest and THEN the mindwipe (yeah I'm covering my bases here :o). And the only time Marvel is ever going to bring Ben Reilly back is if Peter decides to adopt that identity after running from the feds, a flashback, a trade reprinting the Scarlet Spider issues, or a "What If?" comic.

Joe Quesada and J.Michael Strazynski are easily the worst duo in modern comic book history. Sure JMS does the writing himself, but Quesada helps concoct and alter many of these half-cocked schemes. Quesada is the reason we got Norman deflowering Gwen, of her volition (JMS wanted the kids to be Peter's) and Quesada will most likely be the reason why this angle is going to blow. Quesada is the worst thing to happen to Spider-Man. Worst than clones...worst than spider-gods. Quesada has single handedly delivered blow after blow to my favorite super hero, thus forcing me to seek refuge with another comic book company (DC).

At least when DC does something that is a "pivotal moment", it truly ushers in new view points and potential (such as killing the old Blue Beetle, the rape of Sue Dibny and other such seemingly dramatic stories). I have to at least read the first issue that this all goes down in. Then a final analysis can be offered. But for now, I am uneasy about all of this, thanks to the fact that Quesada is emphasizing the correlation between wearing the black suit, and events in Civil War. I realize that Civil War is supposed to be Marvels pale competitor to DC's Crisis, in the effect of drastically changing 616....but I just can't help but feel that more bad will come of this, than good.

I welcome the change. now we'll have a more brooding Spidey.

Yay! I like my brooding spidey...but only for a time.

BUT...I want Ben back. I really, really do. The Clone Saga was the storyline I grew up with...It still has a place in my heart.

Now, now. I see what you're trying to do. Make me go all 'whiny emo'.

Trolling gets you nowhere, dude.

I really did like The Scarlet Spider. Ben Reily was a cool character...but I can live without reminders of Mackies work with that story. I grew up with the clone saga also. Do you know what other story people our age also grew up with? Maximum Carnage. It is such a superior saga, with 99% less retcon bull****. How you can like Marvel jerking you around? "Oh Ben is actually an amnesiatic Peter Parker, and the Peter Parker you have all been reading about since the 80's, isn't actually Peter, but the clone. So MJ married the clone, Peter never had the symbiote. Lets just destroy two decades plus, of Peter Parker legacy, by throwing in one of the worst ideas ever. Oh...you don't like that? Okay, well lets retcon, the retcon and keep making more mistakes! Misery for everyone!"

Scarlet Spider beat Venom's ass in way Spider-Man never did. End of story.

Anyway, back on topic:

What if the outcome of Civil War has the US government replacing anti-reg heroes with their own pro-reg versions? Like US Agent would be the new 'legally official' Captain America. And someone would be the new 'legally official' Spider-Man? Why that, that would sure give Parker a reason to skulk around in the black&whites. Spider-Man Underground.

umm.. venom didnt know he could not disrupt the spidey sense...and ben is dead.. he disentegrated.. so sorry..you lose

Venom got his ass beat, and his suit ripped off his damn body. And is now the Scorpem. Not sure if thats worse than being dust, but it seems pretty close

I sorta wish Spidey had had an African American love interest at one point, so we could all be making a bunch of dirty puns throughout this thread.
