The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Based on ASM2's box office and quality, was rebooting a mistake?

How do you feel about ASM2?

  • I enjoyed it and I'm satisfied with the rebooted series

  • I would've preferred Sony do SM4/SM5/SM6 with a new director and cast

  • I would've preferred Raimi do one final movie (SM4) then recast SM5

  • I would've preferred Raimi do 2 or 3 more SM movies with Tobey and Dunst

These are really some interesting insights that us fans are really getting into these debates because we care for our beloved franchises when they're not done right and when studio interference can't leave well enough alone.

It's too bad studio executives will probably never roam these boards because they can learn a thing or two.

I think they do roam the boards. They just take the worst ideas.

There is somebody here named Avi Arad. I bet its really him. LOL

The influence of the boards/internet gave us the Spidey suit used in ASM2.

It's actually too bad they do, Spider-Man 3-Amazing 2 were written to pander to fans outcries. Spider-Man 3 was rewritten for Venom, AMS was written to please all the gripes with the old franchise, AMS 2 was written to please everyone who didn't like the tone of the reboot. The best thing they could do honestly is stop giving us what we ask for and giving us what we need.

According to the special features on Amazing Spider-Man, it was Raimi's idea that to tell the most interesting parts of Peter's life they had to backtrack to him in high school. Now admittedly, considering the source we should take that with a grain of salt, but there isn't anything yet that has said otherwise. He didn't want to stick around and put out a underwhelming movie. And from what I've read of SM4, it is the only Spider-Man movie so far to really make me want to put my head in my hands.

I don't think they were deliberately trying to swoop those other films tone. The Batman Begins influence is debatable I'll give you that, but to say they were trying to copy Avengers?

Avengers is the Marvel comics tone. This is a movie based on a Marvel comics character. The tone is more on par for Spidey in this movie than the last one, and I don't think Avengers has anything to do with that.

The Avengers influence on the entire franchise is more valid, but it didn't over take this whole movie. We have 1 scene and the end credits which establish a little bit of world building, giving us an idea of the future of the series. And it works for Spider-Man, it is something that was missing last time around no matter how you look at it. And the movies will still be isolated to Spider-Man's world. It isn't like they are digging through Spider-Man's associates to spin off Spider-Woman, or Alpha, or Cloak and Dagger. They are setting up his villains for the future of Spider-Man's own films.

You're going to be hard putting telling any industry analyst they aren't following suit from avengers. They aren't trying to copy the tone, but every studio took note to the third highest grossing film of all time, especially after it boosted iron man 600 mil from 2 to 3. Also amazing spider-man didn't come out when sm4 was scheduled, it came out a year later.

Yes they are setting up spin offs for venom, sinister six, potentially black cat, and prior to avengers the plan was a trilogy. It's not wrong for Sony to copy then, every studio is, but you can't dance around the issue.

i have always wondered whether they were listening to fans about the wrong things tbh, so every little criticism ends up effecting the final product we are getting, like listening to fans reactions to the footage then changing it rather then ideas before hand

i still wonder whats with all the cuts and alternatives scenes being used, i mean i am sure they do it with other movies but why does it feel like TASM and TASM2 has the biggest most stand out ones that they put in the trailers like they they convince people they are going to use but change it later, it could be webb but i can't help but think no director would film so many alternative scenes and subplots and then throw some out and put the film together like a jigsaw

avi and sony i do wonder about though

I assume a good portion of the cuts and alternate scenes are because they added the Sinister Six angle.

Indeed, news of the "Sinister Six" plan came as a surprise to even some of the actors rumored to be involved. For instance, actor Dane DeHaan told CBR News that "Sinister Six" was "never part of the plan" when he first signed on to play Harry Osborn in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2."

"There was no murmur of that when we were shooting," he said. "But as they started to show the movie, people were responding so well to Harry and Electro and the Goblin, and that's where they got the idea."

Tolmach confirmed that the idea for "Sinister Six" grew out of watching "The Amazing Spider-Man" sequel take shape.

"
Something happened when we were making this last movie," he said. "It happened early in the making of this last movie. Some of it was the story. Some of it was the casting of the villains that are in this movie. Some of it was [production designer] Mark Friedberg's mind-blowing set creation. Suddenly, Oscorp was becoming this character in a way that even caught us slightly off guard. It was the place where all these things originated from."

maybe in the other cut?

It's always a good sign when mid filming, the studio comes in and mandates that they shoehorn all this other stuff into the movie.

Yep it's clear as day that the behind the scenes of TASM 2 was a disaster. I actually feel sorry for Webb, he has virtually no creative control.

Even if one liked the film they'd have to admit that the franchise is not in a good place with so, so much studio meddling.

As much as I absolutely loved ASM2, gave it a 9/10, it's upsetting to know that there is a better movie lying somewhere on the cutting room floor.

Why can't the studio just let it be? You hire a guy for a job, Webb in this case, so don't you have confidence that he can bring you a quality product? If not, why hire him in the first place? Yeah, yeah, so they can just roll right over him. The studio is making mistakes and they think they're not...which is very troubling.

Based on the success of CA: TWS and the very good reviews (so far) for DOFP, I can totally see how Sony will think they need to now try and copy those ideas for the next installment. How does a spy-crime-drama-thriller sound for Spider-Man? Awesome! And hey, let's throw in some time travel where he goes back and gets to hug his dad one more time! Yay! lol

Idk how they're actually linked but that just sprang to mind, haha!

rebooting is not a mistake, keeping it separated from mcu is the mistake

Im sick of him getting a pass! He's as guilty as the studio, lets not act as he doesn't get a check for making this movies and in my opinion he's not earning that money.

This is pretty much my situation exactly. I loved TASM, love the world Webb & Co. have created, and I even enjoyed this installment as well. But the blatant studio meddling dampened that enjoyment this go-round and their plans for the future of this franchise make it sound like it's only getting worse from here. :csad:

I don't think they have a strong conviction about what they want to do with this film series.

I agree with this. Love Webb, the cast, etc. I loved both films but I think so many studios are trying to mimick the Avengers by expanding all these properties. The problem is when you force all this "extra" world building it's a gamble and chaacters like Loki and Stark/Iron Man carried those films. While I consider Andrew every bit as awesome as Pete/Spidey as RDJ and TH as their repsective characters, I'm sure many people do not because they may fail to realize that a character like Stark or Loki is completely different than Pete/Spidey. I thought Andrew and Dane were great in this but I think the writing could have been better to play off their past relationship and harry's turmoil/relationship problems with his dad.

Garfield I think is excellent in the Spider-Man costume, but I just don't buy this Peter Parker as a nerd, honestly. He feels more like a jock at times than he does Peter Parker. Things like kissing Gwen when he grabbed his diploma and such just don't scream Peter Parker to me. Also, Peter Parker shouldn't need YT to tell him how a battery works.

TASM should probably just started with Peter Parker as Spider-Man trying to balance SM, school and relationships. They probably could have done the origin during the credits. For the most part it felt like an unneeded rehash.

Garfield has good intentions, but his Peter Parker is really way too cool to be Peter Parker.

I agree. He's as much Peter Parker as Ryan Reynolds was Hal Jordan. IE. He wasn't. At all.
