The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Based on ASM2's box office and quality, was rebooting a mistake?

How do you feel about ASM2?

  • I enjoyed it and I'm satisfied with the rebooted series

  • I would've preferred Sony do SM4/SM5/SM6 with a new director and cast

  • I would've preferred Raimi do one final movie (SM4) then recast SM5

  • I would've preferred Raimi do 2 or 3 more SM movies with Tobey and Dunst

We don't know the domestic BO#'s yet, and a good portion of posters haven't seen it yet. So, I am closing this thread until after it opens in the US and more people can comment.

Cautiously opening. Please, let's make this about what you would have preferred Sony to do, and less a Raimi vs Webb whine fest. If this thread devolves into that, I will close it.

I saw ASM2 a few hours ago.

I find these films more relatable than the Raimi films.

I think Spider-man's relationships are more powerful and Spider-man looks and acts exactly as he should.

I wish the reboot were more popular but I'm glad they rebooted.

Option 5:

I would've preferred Sony to reboot the franchise in a different direction

:o

Love the Peter Parker Gwen Stacy arc, best love story in a Comic Book movie, nothing beats it.
The conclusion to the love story is simply amazing, heartbreaking as you gained value from it throughout two films.
Best portrayal of Spiderman across the two films.

The reboot could have bombed but it didn't in my opinion

This. A reboot would not have been necessary if the Gwen arc had been told in the first place. And while I loved Raimis first two movies and enjoyed the third (must be one of the few) not dealing with the Stacy arc was unforgivable.

Reboot or no reboot, I think it's just franchise fatigue. We'd be having this exact conversation if it was Spiderman 5 opening and people would be demanding a reboot.

I would have preferred they just handed the franchise back over to Marvel.

The reboot series hasn't been super great but I have enjoyed it. At the same time I like the reboot and wanted to see more Raimi's Spider-Man movies.

For as much as I dislike these movies, I can't call the mere decision to reboot a mistake per se. What was actually a mistake were the various creative blunders that have been settled upon across these two movies and, apparently, for the foreseeable future.

Movies like Casino Royale, Batman Begins, and Star Trek have proven that reboots are just fine when done properly. I'm also not voting on the poll because none of the choices reflect how I feel.

All I want are good Spider-Man movies again, that's it. I don't care what universe they're attached to, what studio is responsible, or what director drives the bus. I also don't give a hoot about superficial details from any particular version of whatever Spider-Man comics, even as a lifelong reader. If a director can put forth a compelling, original vision for the character, I'll get behind it. My allegiances are to two things - the character and quality. Whomsoever manages to deliver both of these consistently has my unconditional support. I just want the character and his world to be treated with care, creativity, and respect. That's not happening right now, reboot or not.

From Wikipedia:

On its opening day, a pre-holiday Tuesday, it set a Tuesday-gross record with $35 million (previously held by Transformers).[247] The next day, the film dropped 33.4 percent to $23.3 million—the second-highest non-opening Wednesday.[248] Over the three-day weekend, it grossed $62.0 million. This pushed the film's six-day gross to $137.0 million, which was smaller than those of Transformers ($155.41 million) and Spider-Man 2 ($180.07 million) among past Fourth of July releases.

Two things to keep in mind from that:
-made $62 million domestic over the three-day weekend.
-made $137 overall in the first week, if you account for it being released on Tuesday.

Entertainment Weekly says ASM2 made $92 million domestic.

Not sure if that's just for Friday or for the overall weekend. Either way, it already topped the first film's first weekend's domestic result. It also makes it the highest opening of the year, behind Cap 2 by just $3 million.

But since ASM1 got a 3-day start before the weekend, it's only fair to compare them with the results from next week Wednesday. I guess we'll see what happens.

ASM1's start was scheduled around the 4th of July - hence the huge mid week opening #s and the lower Fri-Sun. ASM2's early May weekday numbers won't come anywhere near those and the 7 day total will be about $30m less.

Gitesh Pandya ‏@giteshpandyahttps://***********/giteshpandya/status/462976149396918272 Comparing 1st week 7-day starts, TASM2 will fall below TASM1. About $115M for TASM2 vs $144.6M for TASM1. Intl #s key.

I would have continued the Raimi franchise. If Raimi, Maguire, and company wanted to return, then great. If not, recast.

Redoing the origin was unnecessary. All it did was cross ground we already covered. The franchise needed to move forwards, not backwards.

If anything came out of the reboot it's that the Gwen Stacy story arc got the attention it deserved.

You couldn't really do that using the Raimi continuity.

I think they wanted to reboot for several reasons and Gewn Stacy was one of them. They were wanting to do a satisfying portrayal of her story with Peter from the get go. And change the tone of the previous film altogether. That was all but ruined with the Osborns gone.

They also wanted to age Peter Parker slower. They felt like they grew him up too fast and didn't have time to flesh him out.

Even then, it made $75 million during those first three weekdays. I guess we'll just wait and see.

All this is going to do is become a Webb Vs Raimi debate......yet again.

Pretty much.

Though I felt ASM wasn't as good as it could have been, but Im happy they did Reboot the series. I wanted a different Spider-Man. A Spider-Man more up my alley.

I don't think they should have retold the origin the way they did, ASM was a bit sloppy. I disagree with some decisions, and I didn't like it as much as the other movies, and I hated the suit but I saw the potential in it all.

Now that ASM2 is out, it legitimizes ASM1 so much more for me. I can accept certain decisions that I disagreed with. ASM1 had to establish its own origin story and plot threads, I can respect that.

ASM2 is the best Spider-Man movie we've gotten so far, one of the best superhero movies ever made IMO and I absolutely think rebooting was the correct route no matter what the situation. Raimi and company were tired, things were falling apart, SM4 would have put the nail in the coffin. We dodged a real bullet in my view.

OH and Im in the minority here on this one, but I NEVER want to see Spider-man in the MCU. I don't want to give my views because it will turn into an MCU vs Sony vs Fox debate I'm sure. But I'm SO happy Spider-Man is not apart of the MCU.

Sure you could have. Just have MJ and Gwen switch roles.

Which is why he graduated high school in the sequel instead of the first one.

I remember when the reboot started, it was because they wanted to make it cheaper than the Raimi moves and focus more on his high school years. Clearly that didn't happen. And it can never really happen because the actor who plays him can't look like he's in high school forever.

this. But a perfect world is a mix of Raimi and Webb films with Peter being in High School for the first two and the rest should be Peter in college growing up and becoming Spider-Man and introduced Gwen in the first movie with MJ showing up in the third and Gwen dying in the third or fourth.

Sure you could have. Just have MJ and Gwen switch roles.

Gwen would no longer be Parker's first love and they already used the Gwen Stacy fall in SM1.

Plus Gwen for SM3 was just a very dull character. I can't see her death having as much impact as Emma Stone's.
