So, I finally got around the playing this one. Was out of the country when it first released, so I missed it. Ending up shooting myself in the foot a little; got the Wii U versions since it was $10 cheaper than the 360 version. I knew that it lacked online stuff, which I made no issue with since I don't have Live anyway, but wasn't aware they had stopped releasing DLC right before the Mr. Freeze thing came out. Oh well, partly my fault for not doing my research.
As far as I how I felt about the game: I'm going to go ahead and post story SPOILERS. At this point, I figure this has been out long enough that I don't need to black out or SPOILER tag anything, so I am going to post SPOILERS, so don't read the rest of this statement if you don't want to read SPOILERs.
SPOILERS!
Okay, well, anyway. I seem to vaguely recall people saying the combat system seemed off in this one compared to the other two games. It's been quite a while since I played either Asylum or City, but it really didn't feel much different to me. Still the same fun, free flow combat that I've come to like from the series.
I didn't run into any major bugs, either, which I know was a major issue. Guess there's been a patch or something. I ran into some slow down when fighting big groups, but I'm pretty sure I had that happen to me in Asylum and City, too, so it was no big. The only big glitch I encountered was once in the Blackgate sewers Batman constantly repeated a line about having to increase the water level to precede, even after I did it. Had to reset then, because it got annoying.
Story-wise, I really enjoyed this until the third act at Blackgate. I didn't have a huge issue with Joker being in it and playing a bigger role, since this wold technically be the first meeting of the two, but it should've stopped when Joker had his section in Blackgate. I mean, they even let Black Mask escape, so it seemed the obvious route was to have the rest of game be about him trying to return to power with the Joker out of the way. They could've had their Joker jack-off feast, and then still gave enough credit to other villains without having him completely overwhelming the narrative. But they chose to go the rather boring route of having the Joker yet again be the big bad, along with a ****** final boss fight that just regurgitated the same stuff that had already been said in Joker's dream section. Disappointing in that regard, definitely.
But, having said that, I did enjoy how the game handled all the characters. I give a lot of credit to WB Montreal for revising the characterization for Bane, which I felt was always a big botch on the part of the Asylum. Outside the disappointing direction the story took in the end, it was enjoyable regardless. If anything, I think it did a better job of handling a huge cast of characters than City did, which I think tended to feel rather unfocused and all over the place, especially near the end.
There was definitely an in-between game feel to it. Nothing was really new, outside the shock gloves, and there definitely wasn't the huge step up in scope from Asylum to City, but still a great game with a ton of content.
