Batman/Bruce Wayne Casting Thread

Well Michael Keaton wasn't so known when he was cast. What did people know him as mostly? Mr Mom?

That was why people were horrified that Keaton was going to play Batman and why WB got thousands of letter protesting Keaton as Batman and demanding someone else play Batman.

Keaton was well known when he was cast in the 80s, which is why people freaked out.

He'd been in several hit films throughout the eighties such as Nightshift, Johnny Dangerously, Clean and Sober, Beetlejuice, Dream team, Mr Mom, etc.

He was known mostly as a comedian than a dramatic actor, which is why fans and the media were skeptical about his casting in the late 80s.

Truth be told, Bale is the only actor who wasn't a household name when they were cast as Bruce Wayne. Even then , he'd done American Pyscho and several other films since he was a child by the time he was cast.

All the others, including Affleck, were well known when they were cast.

Yeah, Michael Keaton was def a well known commodity when he was cast

Yeah, Oscar Isaac as Batman would be some pretty damn inspired casting. Certainly a pick that would elicit a more positive reaction from me than someone like Armie Hammer.

I said this back in February/March, but I think Toby Kebbell is also someone to keep an eye on. Especially given how he's worked with Reeves before in the Apes films.

Oscar Isaac as Bruce Wayne/Batman...now this this right here is my pick for Affleck's replacement

I love Oscar Isaac, but I just can't see it which sucks. I want someone out of left field. Something just like the OP said..."inspired".

That's why sometimes you've just gotta trust the director. They've seen something that obviously we haven't. I know Burton said something along the lines of, "When you look into his eyes...there's just something very off about Keaton." He never said he could figure out what it was, but...he just didn't seem "right". Who would have gotten that kind of insight other than a director?

Oscar Isaac is a great actor. I can't quite see him as Bruce Wayne. He's only 5'10 too right? Not that Keaton wasn't great as Batman but I would prefer we stay in the 6'0 and above range especially when all of the League is pretty tall.

With platform boots and long ears, Batman would be easily well over 6ft. I would prefer him about 5'10" though when he's Bruce Wayne.

If they want someone under 6ft though, they can get Charlie Cox. :o

No one else is going for Richard Armitage ? K den.

Looks like Bruce Wayne to me :

I'd love Armitage in the role. Just look at this dude:

Fits the character like a glove.

Seeing him as the Red Dragon in Hannibal convinced me. Similarly to how Bale's role as a serial killer in American Psycho sorta got him the Batman role. Funny how that works out :oldrazz:

Blue eyes, dark hair, over six-feet tall, deep voice, talented actor.

Complete package.

I like Armitage but you're going to run into the same issues with him as you will with Affleck. He's currently 45 and would be likely over 50 by the time you get to the third (or maybe even second) film.

They need to go younger.

I don't think the older age is the problem. My bigger issue is Affleck's weight keeps fluctuating quite a bit, whereas Armitage has always been a pretty slender guy. Stay in decent enough shape for close-ups etc, and the stunt guys can do most of the heavy lifting (no pun intended).

Yeah, that's true. RDJ is in his 50s now but he's always been around the same size. Of course, you need to be bulkier to play Batman than you do to play Iron Man, but still.

Well that's going to be a matter of preference unfortunately. I myself don't mind a slimmer Batman, though I know many here disagree.

Well, IMO, the ideal physique for Batman was Bale in Batman Begins. I thought he lost a little too much muscle mass in TDK, though he was still obviously in good shape. Either way though, I want whoever the next Batman is not too look the way Affleck looks in the suit -- like the Incredible Hulk in a cape.

Richard Armitage would be a good Batman. He has a good voice for it too.

Why does Batman have to be played by a white man? Catwoman has been played by black women, why not Batman

Someone like Idris Elba

Or if we want someone less well known, Denzel Wells.

Why does Batman have to be played by a white man?

Batman doesn't. However, *Bruce Wayne* does, since he's not merely rich, or even super rich. He's the 1% of the 1%, the king of high society from a family that has been the definition of "rich and powerful" for like 200 years. Which is to say, the Waynes really do have to be really, really white. The kind of family dynasties that the Waynes draw inspiration from are the kind of New England WASP households where its a scandalous act of liberalism to marry a Jew, let alone anyway less WASP-y.

Maybe Bruce Wayne can be white but when he's Batman he's black. :o

Cast two different actors.

It doesn't have to follow that in the movie though. Perhaps Thomas Wayne was the founder of something like Motown records and that is where the family fortune came from.
The hit that killed Thomas and Martha could have even come from a rival record company.

At that point your making a fair radical change to the Batman character. "The Waynes are Princes of Gotham" is not a small part of his premise.

I've promised the gods the life of my firstborn son so your ideas may never reach producers. In any lifetime. Of any dimension.

Thomas Wayne could just be Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes and Martha could be Mariah Dillard. :o
