The Dark Knight Batsuit Discussion Thread

Do you like the idea of a new Batsuit in TDK?

  • Yes, I like the idea of a change to a greyish, lighter & more streamlined suit.

  • No, I would rather Batman stay in the black, body armour type suit from BB.

I've always preferred the armor look to the organic look in live action.

No need to sculpt a 6-pac on a rubber suit when we know it's fake

Agreed. I mean we all know that for example Clooney has no 6-pack under this suit. The armor look just makes more sense when doing a live action movie. I know some purists may disagree but this is not the way to go if you don't wanna make somewhat goofy Batman movies IMO.

The only problem I had with Clooney's suit were the nipples, ears (pointing outwards for some odd reason), and the actor. Would I prefer an armored appearance? Yes. But I think sculpted features could work as long as they were toned down a little. More like hinted at through the armor as opposed to being the prominent feature.

In a certain respect, all of the previous Batsuits other than Batman Returns' were superior to TDK's because they at least made attempts to include the organic musculature that is fairly central to Batman's apperance.

That's your opinion, but a lot of people (myself included) feel that the rubber six-packs and pecs looked really corny.

It's weird how the color of the suits in these movies varies so much. It's odd how in many pictures it has a uniform color yet in others appears to be grey with a darker mask.

Peculiar!

It looks Grey, yet it also looks like it has shades of black. The cape looks consistently black, though. Oh yeah, in that one Magazine cover, it looks like carbon fiber on the chest plates, but I can't see anything like that on other pictures.

I like the Schumacher films but not the suits much. Kilmer's was fine, but Clooney's was awful.

I do agree Kilmer's suit wasn't too bad. But the nipples & the abs kill it for me. I prefer Batman not to have fake muscles on his suit. It make it sound like he is a metrosexual with that. I prefer armorish look like in BR, BB, & TDK over orangic muscles suit anytime.

Oh, the bad thing about Clooney's first suit beside the awful nipples & the ears was the bat symbol on the shin part of the boots. Seriously, were those necessary? Even Robin have the bird symbol on his boots too.

I also do prefer this suit over any of the other Burton/Shumaker suits.

Ugh, I forgot about that. Precedence for the over-shielding of the SR suit? Another forum, another thread. But yes, that blatant use of the Bat and Robin all over their suits was unnecessary.

Thug: Hey, is that dude over there with the big black cape, black armor with a bat symbol, and a mask with bat ears on it Batman?
Thug's Thug Friend: Check his boots...

That screencap makes me HATE the new suit compared to some of the other pics!

Returns is still my favorite, then Begins, then B89, then Forever, and I think it's a tie between TDK and B&R. I'll still wait till we have better footage to decide, but from what I see so far, I'm not to thrilled about the new suit.

I like the look of the RETURNS suit, but it looks even more cheaply made than the '89 suit. Looks like they just threw something together.

I don't think the movie suits were ever meant to actually look like they were Batman's actual muscles, it was just a way to bring the comic book/armor "aesthetic" to live action (which couldn't really be the character's muscles showing through in any realistic way). And it worked, for the most part. I've always thought comic books show a bit too many muscles for a character wearing even a skintight garment.

why can't we just have a comic book suit for once? is that too much to ask? Superman got one... even though it sucked, he still got one... they should pay the same respects to Batman.

Clooney is one of the coolest guys on Earth(I don't like all his movies but the man is very charismatic) but he just can't pull off those batsuits.

Clooney has survived the franchise, along with Uma. No so much for Silverstone or O'Donell (although he's been big on TV i suppose)

Clooney has been doing superbly but there is something about him that just doesn't say "Bruce Wayne/Batman". First of all, it's those brown eyes. Batman can't have brown eyes. Keaton's blue eyes were perfect for the job and Bale's green eyes also get the job done. Clooney's face and gaze are too gentle. There is no strictness and harshness.

Bale, for example, comes off as a guy who I would not wanna piss off. There's something intensive and harsh about him. It's hard to explain but those qualities(among others) make him the ideal Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Because Batman is human and doesn't have superpowers blah, blah, blah....

It basically comes down to it being to big a creative risk. A Batman movie like so many are asking for would naturally have to be a stylized fantasy. Unfortunately there are some who can't see past the Burton films or B&R, as noted to the constant references to said films. 300 and Sin city must give them fits.

Batman is a cash cow--and in the light of the success of other comicbook movies WB wanted a piece of the pie--they just wanted to eliminate as much of the creative risk as possible inherent with such projects.

Ergo, the bane of all comicbook movies: ground the character in reality. Take away a chunk of the fantasy and stylizations that are usually the norm with these films. While the filmaker will have his creative input, the reality take will pretty much cut down most of the creative risk usually involved with such films. They also save a chunk of $$$ on sfx.

It can't go wrong....money in the bank.

As someone else on these boards said, I'm sure WB had a lot more say in this latest Batman franchise, especially after B&R. Not to say Nolan had no freedom of course.

Again, Nolan hasn't made a bad film--just not what many where expecting...and it grates me to no end that WB didn't deliver. They bailed on producing Batman the way we know him, complete with all the fantasy and visual stylization and such.

Damn you WB. Damn you to hell.
