Black Panther The Official News and Speculation Thread - - Part 11

Seeing that pic does have me thinking how might a Black Panther have been if it was filmed in the 90s with say Wesley Snipes in the role or even Djimon Hounsou?

what do you guys think?

I've always been partial to Chiwetel Ejiofor in the role if somehow it might have been made a decade ago.

Just finished watching CW. The post credit scene where Bucky is frozen in Wakanda; BP made it appear as though when T'Challa and Co are greeted by the Queen it's the first time he's been home since his father died, so when did the CW post credit scene take place?

It might've been his first time back to the main palace and seeing his mother, but his dialogue with Shuri regarding the EMP beads he used to extract Nakia (she wanted to update them) implies that he'd been back in Wakanda at least once to pick up said beads and intel for said extraction mission. (Plus, Okoye is traveling with him, and she wasn't already outside of Wakanda as far as we know, nor does it seem in her nature to be abroad much in the first place.)

The main story of Black Panther picks up about a week after the Vienna bombing, and most of what happens after that occurs pretty much within the span of a few days (unless there's some time skip that I overlooked), so it makes the most sense for T'Challa to have brought Bucky and Cap back to Wakanda before he went out on his mission to extract Nakia. Notice that the lab they're in A) isn't the one based in Mount Bashenga, and B) is located outside of the capital city, so to me at least, it seems like T'Challa contacted Shuri ahead of time and brought the Americans to an outpost lab away from where all the real secrets were, without telling anyone unrelated to the situation about what was going on, his mother included, because he wanted to keep the whole thing as under the radar as possible. Makes sense to me, anyway.

Yeah he's been back at least once before BP starts. We have no idea how long he'd been out and about on that mission to find Nakia, and I think his mother was just sentimental upon his return this time because he was back for his ceremony the next day.

Some were suggesting Ejiofor for this movie, back when it was all just speculation. It's not as if he's too old since they cast an actor who is a little older than him.

Boseman is actually a few months younger than Ejiofor (they're both 40) but he has a much more youthful look that might've factored into them casting him as T'Challa. (Granted, all the stories about his casting say that Marvel pretty much had Boseman in mind for the role in the first place, and he didn't even audition; they just called him up after seeing his work.)

Also, given the general state of 90s superhero flicks, I kind of imagine that a Black Panther film would've been, um, interesting overall. Apparently the plan for the Panther habit was to just have a feline mask and a black leotard, so you can take that as you wish. Not saying that Snipes couldn't have played the part well, I'm just iffy on how the rest of the project would've looked.

Djimon Hounsou was my first choice before they casted him in GotG.

I could've seen Hounsuo as T'chaka if they'd gone with a younger T'challa. But I don't think it would've made sense to start the franchise with a guy in his 50s as the title character.

Yeah he would also have been fine IMO.

BP becoming a cultural phenomenon not just in film but in clothes/apparel too and in everything else just goes to show us that this film on a grand scale just may in fact be the greatest comic book movie of all time

funny how the Deadpool 2 trailer had hip-hop song in it and no one complained about it but when it was featured in the BP trailer, then it was a problem.

Haters gonna hate....but give it another few hours.

True, but Boseman looks considerably younger. Those I wish Ejiofor had done a role in this. One heck of an actor

That's just what is intriguing to me because at that time Chadwick had really only done some small tv series and '42. He had just released the James Brown biopic when Marvel come across him. He was arguably a rising star, but still unknown. I'd have figured Marvel would have shopped a BP solo to just about every Black actor in the industry.

Heck, even Anthony Mackie wanted it even after he signed on to play Falcon in 2012/13

Still, such a shame they gave an actor of his talent a 5min role as a crony in GotG :csad:

I'm almost positive that if Hounsou had never been in Guardians of the Galaxy, he would have been cast as Zuri in this. He really was wasted in GOTG. His character's name was never even spoken on screen.

finally got to watch BP yesterday.

this is probably one of my fave MCU movies now.

i like how t'challa being of royalty creates a wholely unique dynamic for superhero origin movies compared to the usual.

that court intrigue gives a shakespearian vibe.
killmonger was like a tragic shakespearian villian as well.

loved it brought up big issues (tradition vs individual choice, isolationalism vs cooperation) along with t'challa's own personal journey here.

the wakandan sci-fi tech was cool!

i honestly feel chadwick boseman is one of the best actors to play a superhero lead in the mcu right now.

Said in misc cbf thread that its my 2nd favorite (tied with a few others) and behind TDK. Right now I have TDK in a tier by itself.

I think that will be the view over time.

The shame is that with a more impactful 3rd act/better fights I think it would have been of that tier.

Its still the deepest and most political comicbook film to date imo. Just wish Coogler and crew executed it better on a technical level.

I totally concur. He should have been involved in BP in some facet.

I'll never get why they got him for such a small role. It's like casting Elba for Heimdall in the first film where he got like 5mins of screentime and then 5minutes in the sequel. They beefed up his role for Ragnarok, but still. It's odd

Hounsou deserved better than a no-name henchman.

On the bright side though, Ejiofor is likely to be back for Dr. Strange 2.

I'm worried that since it's taking longer than expected for them to announce dr strange 2 whatever they had in mind for the sequel at the start will probably look a lot different now (like thor ragnarok) & Mordo might just end up playing a smaller more forgettable role or a secondary villain like Crossbones in Civil War. Sucks bc Chiwetel is such a great actor.

Chiwetel should have played Killmonger
