Man About Town (Drama, 97 minutes) Starring Ben Affleck, Rebecca Romijn, John Cleese, Bai Ling, Samuel Ball, Mike Binder, Gina Gershon, Adam Goldberg. Directed by Mike Binder.
Hollywood agent Jack (Affleck) feels his life is going downhill and decides to take Dr. Primkin's (Cleese) diary writing class to discover his true identity. Having suffered childhood trauma because of a perfect brother that made him feel like a total loser, Jack is obsessed with recognition and can hardly tolerate rejection.
Despite being the main man, Affleck is short of the warmth necessary to arouse sympathy and isn't even half a clown to provoke sincere laughs during comic moments. Romijn convincingly plays Nina, the unfaithful but devoted wife, and Cleese is the sarcastic and witty Mr. Primkin. Binder and Gershon also create appropriate nervous competition in the agency.
Pic has CG effects that exaggerate its surreality; it looks fine, but annoying. A half-baked satire that might be good for a lazy Sunday on a couch, but lacks the charm to be on the big screen. **
