Birds of Prey BoP Box Office Thread

Let me ask you this, if Sam takes on the movie and he isn't able to create it from scratch (apparently Cargill and Derrickson didn't even write a first draft), does that mean you value his creative freedom (the movie being his) more then he does? He certainly doesn't need a paycheck. Also, why do you assume he wouldn't be excited about the prospects of working within a cinematic universe, or for that matter, working with alternative versions of characters within a multiverse? Is it just because none of these things interest you as much? Not trying to be a prick here, but I find these arguments self-serving more then anything because the actual person who takes on such project's obviously wants to. Why do people assume or make it appear like he doesn't know what he's getting into?

of course not. Look, either way, Sam Raimi’s name attached to the movie guarantees my ticket and imo indicates the movie will have much more of a flair than its predecessor. The point of my post was to illustrate that either way there is going to be restrictions and Raimi will not be going buck wild on the project because Kevin Feige has a long term plan that each mcu film must build to.

I so far like the old school movie making approach that DC has been taking, i.e. make the best damn movie you can now, go all out and if audiences want a sequel, great we’ll figure out how to top ourselves later. Look at all the accolades Joker is getting, a stand alone DC comics film that was just interested in telling its own epic story. I would like more of that from DC is all I’m saying.

The title for this has officially been changed to Harley Quinn: The Birds of Prey.

Guess WB realized that the name wasn’t helping it at the box office.

I haven't seen this movie and will probably have to wait till streaming, but that it crazy how this happened the monday after opening weekend. Shows you what WB thought of the marketing and/or BO of this film. Has this ever happened before? I know titles change when available on home media, but during the theatrical run??? Let alone four days in!?

Wow after finally seeing the movie it's even more of shame that it bombed, because damn is it a lot of fun. I honestly don't even know what to blame for it either, because it's actually a lot closer to the movie the trailers promised than I was expecting, and that is exactly what some were saying here and now I get it. Maybe general audiences just weren't all that interested in a Harley Quinn spinoff movie after all or didn't know she was really in it with her name being almost hidden in that extremely long and unnecessary title.
The only thing that can save this is WOM basically. All that stuff about it being good is after the fact. A person can't see how good a film is if they don't buy a ticket to see the film itself to begin with. And that all begins in the marketing and other pre-release factors. Questionable decisions like that long ass name, the seemingly forced R to ride the coattails of Joker and Deadpool without the R content to back it up, and even deciding to make this film in the first place after the reception of SS while everyone is waiting for any word on the Flash, MoS2, and even Batman news, just boggles the mind.

Well it's better than sending out a CGI patch version after release *ahem* Cats *ahem* :funny:

I can’t remember of a big movie having its title change so soon after release...particularly directly after its opening weekend. But it does show that WB wasn’t exactly happy with the box office results thus far otherwise I doubt a change happens like this.

I understand, but my point is you're projecting your own expectations onto him for what he'd want to do or be interested in as a concept. How do you know working within a cinematic framework (as the Marvel fan he is) doesn't interest him, or challenge him to work a different way then the norm? I can't emphasize this enough, but he didn't say no to the offer. Taika and Coogler didn't need to return after their films. Indie darling, master of naturalism Chloe Zhao didn't need to go to Marvel, yet they all did. Why? Maybe working in a cinematic universe isn't as limiting (for some directors) as some think? Perhaps they may even like it...Is that not a possibility? There have been issues in the past no doubt, as we've seen at WB as well. If you make enough films, it's going to happen in the industry.

I like it too, great contrast. Look, I get it, what DC is doing right now is currently not possible at Marvel because of a shared universe. It's refreshing and to be applauded. Joker is one of my favorite CBM's ever. But it really is apple and oranges. I understand from an old school filmmaking perspective why it's appealing, and I do hope Marvel will push the envelope further in the future. I think it's inevitable they'll have to, but there is no one way or only way for these films to work.

*Apologise for the edits. Wonky Phone ATM.

Do you think the title change'll help? Or do you think maybe they overestimated the appeal of Harley to the GA?

Its a number of things. I don't think the title will change much, though. It does make the marketing department a nice scape goat, though. Bigger reasons than the title: should have been PG-13, trailers were off putting to a lot of people ( the Hyena laughing at a joke), and so on. The biggest reason this will probably lose money or barely break even: Suicide Squad was a dumpster fire, and this film seemed like it had less "value" as it was (no Joker, Will Smith). I think it's that simple.

I think everyone already knows at this point this is a Harley Quinn movie.

I mean... the most used poster literally features her face in the forefront.
I don't expect it to have much of an effect.

I hope we get a Harley sequel regardless though Birds of Prey getting an actual film will likely not happen and this will be the last we see of Huntress/BC on the big screen.

It's a shame they wasted these 2 characters on this meh of a film, considering what we got on TV, even though their appearances together were short lived.

I mean look at that, that just looks so good if done right.

The Joker can win all the awards and make 3 billion dollars, but that won't lead to an epic JL either way, so what's the point (to me personally) :oldrazz:

I don't care about Harley Quinn. But an actual Birds of Prey movie would have been so exciting. Like I already said in the other threads, Black Canary and the Huntress were wasted in this.

The movie is rated R, yet nothing about the marketing really indicates this and the stinger at the end of the trailer is a hyena giggling at something a person said like its a cheesy 2000's Disney Channel flick. Marketing was horrible in retrospect.

There's actually another issue that I just realised with this film as to why it didn't appeal to anyone. I know I've banged on about how the characters looked in the marketing and how they bare no resemblance to their comic book counterparts, but something that relates to that is actually just the design of the characters in relation to Margot Robbie. Regardless of how comic accurate the costumes are, one thing that can't be argued is that Margot Robbie was intentionally made to stand out from the rest of the cast. With no other stars other than Robbie, what ultimately you're left with is a bunch of no-name characters played by a bunch of no-name actresses. I know Rosie Perez is a veteran and MEW has her fans in the geek sphere but lets be honest, neither of those ladies are drawing people in. So, you end up marketing a film around one actress intentionally made to stand out, but at the same time trying to sell the idea the rest of the cast which don't stand out are equally as important. It makes no sense. It can't be both a team film as well as a solo movie. If it's a team film you've got to make each character stand out from the other. In the end, it ends up looking like a Margot Robbie vanity project, which to a large degree it is, albeit probably not intentionally to the degree it is.

I hope we get a Harley sequel regardless though Birds of Prey getting an actual film will likely not happen and this will be the last we see of Huntress/BC on the big screen.
I really want a Harley sequel but it’s a shame if we don’t see Canary and Huntress again. :csad:

It really didn’t need to be an R.

Title change?

Odd for sure. Is this a first?

I can agree. I'm like one of the few people on here not salivating for the next Batman movie. I would rather see a decent JL or even a World's Finest movie.

Unpopular opinion, but they should have just been fully costumed heroes. Because as is, it's aesthetically unappealing to some. And it should have been called Harley Quinn to begin with.

Same, Reeves Batman doesn't interest me tbh
