Birds of Prey BoP Box Office Thread

Lets all not dance around it, people never wanted to give the movie a chance...simple as that.
From the moment it was annouced, people were hellbent on ripping into it.

Be it for comic accuracy that otherwise doesnt matter much, to the trailers being a problem for not showing enough(which normally seems to be a problem, looking at the reaction to the WW84 trailer in terms of "oh i already can tell the whole plot thanks to the first trailer"), to the fact that it dares more which is now a problem when before people were complaining about how that should be the way.

People were falling over their feet to drown out all criticism about the joker movie, that comic book movies shouldnt be 100% accurate, should try different things and so on.

But here suddenly 100% comic accuracy is a must, otherwise its ****?

People were from day one against the movie for the sake of it, without willing to give it even a tiny chance.
So far most reviews tell you that clearly, that those who gave it a chance...were positivly surprised by how well they nailed the characters and all.

The same can be said about Joker though. Plenty of people did their best to bring it down. BOP couldn't find a target audience and I think that the R- rating definitely contributed to that. Reminding fans of Suicide Squad and Schumacher Bat films probably didn't do any favors either.

I think the general audience was just confused as to what this movie was. I remember going to watch IT part 2 and they showed that “I’m so sick of f***ing clowns” teaser and it was almost awkward how deafening the silence from the opening night crowd was. People were just like “....oooook?” And the sad thing is that teaser was a GREAT idea, the way it was integrated into the main attraction but boy did they mess that up. Just as example of how the marketing team had no idea how to advertise this movie.

Yeah, the idea Joker was given a free ride is incorrect. It was met with loads of skepticism prior to the trailer being released, although personally I thought the second was the far more effective one.

Lol so much "Doom and gloom"

Hamada has had his job for what, 2 years so far? Why would WB fire him, since JL he hasn't produced a critical bomb yet. Now that being said, I can see people being fired if WBs year doesn't improve at the BO. They already reduced the number of film releases, they only have 5 movies releasing from now until July and the only blockbuster in that bunch is WW84. Luckily since WW has become a juggernaut, there's no other releases on that day so far

Great point.

I kinda brought this up in the BOP General News and Discussion thread. The whole "people never wanted to give it a chance" is just a lame excuse. If the movie was marketed well and brought the goods, then people's preconceived notions wouldn't have mattered.
I remember I wasn't going to give Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes a chance and I ended up really enjoying it when I was dragged to the theater.

Joker is a great example. Everyone, including me, ripped on the idea.
And then there's movies like Creed, Rocky Balboa, The first Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street, Jumanji 2, Rise of the Planet of the Apes. All got a large amount of skeptism prior to release and despite people not wanting to give these movies a chance, they made good to great movies and they were marketed well.

Has it been that long already? Time flies because I thought it was shorter. But yeah, each film he's been involved with has been a financial success. Granted, he came in when Aquaman was ready to go, but with Shazam!, there's no denying that he's been involved with critical and financial successes, as few films as there have been. Just didn't realize it'd been two full years already. Time just goes by fast.

They did start marketing campaign with IT Chapter2, followed it up with releasing Harley Quinn cartoon on DC Universe. granted, it wasn't directly connected to this movie but it did manage to get people interested in the character.

Then they released two trailers and a soundtrack by currently popular artists.

And various appearances on talk shows.

So, marketing was there. Some people were not giving it a chance because -

1. Because the movie is woke and it's full of SJW messages etc. (No, it isn't) Black Mask deserves what he gets.

2. Action scenes are cringe-worthy (No at all.)

3. Because they were badly burned by a movie that came 4 years ago "Suicide Squad" and this "looks" to be more of the same. (No, it isn't)

4. Because it does not do justice to Cassandra Cain. (what ? Lame excuse.)

5, Because it's in DCEU, and they want it rebooted. (Keep dreaming..)

Almost exactly 2 years and I was just guessing :funny:

I can only speak for myself obvs, but for me, lack of BG / Batgirl and god-awful costumes, it’s look, aesthetic, too much reliance on a character that even isn’t in the line-up. Mess frankly.

i think you are overthinking.
just like Shazam the trailers didn't win people over that's all.

My friends and I saw the trailer and we were just like 'nope'.
None of the characters looked like the characters, we found the outfits lazy looking and we just...really didn't care.
Even my die-hard Harley Quinn fan friend said she wasn't going to go see it.

Most of them didn't want to go see it because it reminded them of Suicide Squad and most of them don't want more of that sort of thing. And nobody in the Marvel & DC Society at my uni wants to go see it neither.

I can only speak about myself and the people around me, but we just weren't interested. Anything we saw of the movie (trailers/posters/advertisements/interviews) just gave us 'mediocre' vibes.

I haven't seen it so I can't say if it's good or not, but from what I've seen of the online reviews and from what my online friends have said, it's so-so. I can't afford to go to the cinema for a so-so/mediocre movie :/

It’s the movie’s job to sell people on its idea, it’s not the publics job to give it a chance. Even the most skeptical person can be won over if the film is presented well. It took 2 trailers for me to warm to Joker because even though I never liked the idea of a solo film, you could tell it was reaching for the top.

I think interviews deterred a lot of people from seeing the movie, because they seemed to promote it as a seemingly woke movie (not that I know what that means, I don't really care).

The rest is just their opinion. There are plenty of movies I think are cringey that others really like, as well as plenty of movies that I don't like because they didn't do justice to some of the characters.

And I thought they were going to reboot the DCEU with the Flash move? Or is that just speculation.

Anyway, you're allowed to have your opinions, but so are others, so if they think those things of the movie and not go see it, then I believe they're allowed to, no matter if you and I agree or not.

Not surprised by the box office failure up to this point.

This is a great movie but it had a ****ing horrible marketing campaign. Bad trailers and tv spots that misrepresented how fun this movie was.

Awful title too. Get to the point, and just call it “Harley Quinn”.

Critic Mark kermode really liked the movie but even he said he had low expectations going in to see the film since the trailers made it look like some Schumacher Batman & Robin type trainwreck.

The marketing for BoP just didn't do a good enough job selling the movie to general audiences.

-They started the marketing campaign in Sept, yes. But the full blitz didn't seem to start until maybe mid January. That's when I started noticing heavy marketing. Should've started earlier imo.
-Talk show appearances don't usually start until relatively close to release. SO again that's pretty late
-Soundtracks don't sell tickets necessarily. And it's not like the BoP soundtrack had huge buzz around it like Black Panther: The Album, the GotG Awesome Mix, etc.
-The people you're describing in your numbered points make up a very small portion of the overall movie going audience. Especially numbers 1, 3, 4, and 5.

People aren't giving BoP a chance because the marketing wasn't that good. A lot of people are saying "it looks bad" based on the trailer. Not because they care about any of the points you mentioned

I think I saw about 40 people dressed as Harley Quinn last time I went to a comic event. She’s definitely one of the most popular female comic characters.[/]
Yep, she is one of the most popular female cosplay characters.

She is the female joker.

Harley is probably makes DC's top 3 popular female characters currently.

Harley Quinn is very popular and a movie starring her could rake in some big bucks. I just don't think this was it. But it's still early. The Friday numbers haven't come out yet right?

EDIT: They should've called it "Harley Quinn and the Gothan City Sirens" or even just "Harley Quinn"

I was one of only six people at the opening screening at my local cinema which is pretty shocking given the amount of publicity it's received here in the UK (talk show appearances, radio and youtube interviews, prime time TV ads, etc). The "meh, it's ok" word of mouth won't give it much legs.

The whole movie underperforming because people hate that it is woke/SJW argument is weak.

We have seen those accusations levelled at films before and yet those films have still gone on to be successful at the box office.

If people think a movie is good and they will be entertained then they usually turn up.

The type of person who dislikes that the majority of the principal cast is female probably would not of turned up for this film regardless of it's gender views.

It's really interesting because similar to Shazam, critics seem to be enjoying this but it seems like audiences aren't going to see it or don't like it.

Again, I think both come down the the marketing

It's just an easy scapegoat for people
