Bought/Thought September 30th, 2009

Dini is outright ignoring that the Joker cut a smile onto his face, got shot in the head, and knows that Bruce Wayne is Batman.

And considering that this is the Joker's most recent appearance in current continuity since Batman R.I.P., it makes no sense that these things are lacking. And considering that Morrison is in charge, DC would most likely consider the Joker to be the Morrison version for the time being until someone else takes over.

Morrison's Joker is just that; Morrison's Joker. That would have never caught on with anybody but him. Add to the fact that Joker is famously inconsistent and reinventive

Secondly, I wouldn't be surprised if the whole ignoring Joker's appearance was more on the artist's part. He probably doesn't know or doesn't care about Morrison's Joker's appearance.

Thirdly, despite him being in 'charge' I feel that Morrison's stuff is best left to doing his own stuff with characterizations. Obviously other people either can't follow him on what he's doing, or they have no ****ing clue what he's going for, or that just don't care what he's doing. Most likely Morrison's Joker intrepratation would have probably lasted about as long as Xorn not being real post-Morrison even if he's the lead guy right now.

Finally, I'll just say, **** that Joker's look. It looked cool once, but Jigsaw Joker looks dumb as hell and, personally, I hope they ignore that look as much as possible

Just to add, quite frankly, I'm not fond of this idea that one creator or writer should have some kind of full control over when a character returns just because his stuff is popular. We all knew Joker wasn't gone, and as long as Dini can tell another good Joker/Harley story, I see no problem with him utilizing the character for this.

I have no problem with Dini writing Joker, but i will admit i was kinda digging Morrison's 'Marilyn Manson' look. He looked truly crazy and sadistic. I'd crap myself if i saw a guy like that in real life.

Btw, why did Marvel decide to retcon Morrison's Magneto-Xorn thing?

Long story short, Xorn was a popular character to both readers and writers, so they rectonned him to be real for further use

Really?

Though, Dini writing the Joker is fairly neato to me. :fhm:

Lol, well lemme put it to you this way, if you saw marliyn manson in front of you, would you not be like " Holy crap, wuts with this guy??"

Also, I'll add, the whole Joker not knowing Wayne as Batman could probably just be interpreted as Joker ignoring the fact because it's irrelevant to the 'game' they play or whatever.

I can sort of see where people would raise eyebrows at this, but Joker's pretty inconsistent anyway, plus the appearance is polarizing one. It's not like it'll take away from his return in Morrison's stuff or anything like that. I think Dini is doing what he was doing on Detective opposite of Morrison. Morrison is trying to shake things up, and Dini is focusing on telling strong, solid Bat-stories through these other characters. Personally, I say we leave each to each, because they are both fine at what they're doing despite slight continuity hiccups

There's also the possibility this Joker is an impostor, though I hope that's not true myself

I agree completely, although i enjoyed Heart of Hush alot more than R.I.P which was running at the same time, but thats just me.

Well, no, they retconned Magneto/Xorn because that story (intentionally) wrecked Magneto as a character. Separating Xorn and Magneto was part and parcel of that.

Marvel may claim that, but there's plenty of ways they could of done that as opposed to making Xorn real, characterizations get ignored and/or explained away all the time. I know I read at least one interview where another writer or editor tried to talk Morrison out of the reveal and keep Xorn around because of the reception of the character. Maybe they used the recton to do that, but that wasn't the sole, or maybe even the biggest, reason they did so

Well...then why did they let Morrison do it in the first place? Why didnt the editors just say 'no'?

He was probably given free reign to do more or less anything he wanted. Maybe he even had that in writing or something so they couldn't just say no, or maybe he threatened to leave the book if they censored him. I honestly don't know. Personally, I liked Magneto in that. Most people seem not to, but that always seemed what I pictured Magneto as really being in the end.

Alway, **** the Xorn talk about and let's get to reviewing ya'll

I picked up the latest issue of Fantastic Four that I missed last week. Great issue, love the way Hickman is shaping up, and it's good to be back to following the title. Digging the art outside of Reed's look, but that's pretty minor. This is shaping up to be quite good

I just read Gotham City Sirens. I think I'm going to start picking it up regular-like. It was a damned fine read.

To those b****ing about the Joker: Nuts to you. Dini's Joker is awesome and, frankly, a Joker who's been shot in the head and who's carved a smile into his face sounds pretty stupid to me. The Joker/Harley relationship is one of my favorite parts of the animated series, and I have no problem with truly, genuinely good ideas being translated over into the comics from other media.

March's art favors the butt shots a bit too often, but otherwise he's great. His style is kind of like an elongated version of Andy Kubert's, which makes for really emotive faces and body language, which is lovely.

Amen. Morrison's Joker was pretty terrible. Dini writes a wonderfully insane Joker, which is how he is supposed to be.

Dini writes an entertaining Joker but Morrison's Joker was the last time the character had any real depth.

Eh, if having a fun arc with Harley isn't pretentious enough to be deep, I'm cool with that.

Civil War #4
I'm not exactly sure how I feel about Millar's writing, and it's definitely still up in the air in whether the SHRA will or will not come out on top after this series is finally over after all the delays. But I -will- say I can't wait for the next issue to come out.

Thor #603
My heart stopped for a moment at the end. Not in a good way. :(

Time Traveler?

Haha, are you really just now reading Civil War?

I figured the long protracted, thirty thread wide, two month long fights concerning Civil War I had with BrianWilly, and everybody else who simply decided "Government=Evil" would cause so much mental trauma, you'd naturally forget the expanse of time. I'm sorry, Corpy. And I actually mean it. Not in a, "Come here for a hug" and then stab you way. But like in a legitimate way. :csad:

Time Traveler?
I require an IBM 5100 to save the future of which I come from. And warn you the 2008 Summer Olympics will not be held at all, and that America will erupt into civil war that same year. Now I shall return to my 1978 Corvette, which houses two singularities which powers my time machine, to return me to 2036, where Secret Invasion is about to begin. /flutters cape

Also, Runaways#14
I'm not exactly sure how I got my hands on it. The only possible way I got it, was because my comic shop guy pulled it for me for some reason I can't figure out. Because this issue, like the ones before it, went absolutely nowhere, and was in no way enjoyable. Reminiscent of the last issues of Generation X, in the terms of it sucked.

Future France is a scary place. :(

John Titor seems to think the future is pretty swell. What, with it's use of money across the world, despite the fact there's actually no financial economy whatsover, and America is apparently split up into individual colonies which are self contained, with no need for money. Yeah, it doesn't make sense.
