A better movie? Yes. A slower movie (i.e. less repeat viewings)? Again, yes.
And, for the record, a 92% retention rate for a sequel is
pretty darn good. Especially when that's 92% of a ridiculous $404 million.
While not much of a drop I think that under 400 is definately where the franchise will rest.
I don't know. For me, Spidey 3's promising more action (something people wanted), more edge (something people wanted), and Venom (something people wanted). We'll see.
Shrek going from 270 million to 440 million between movies definately shows fan interest going up which will most likely carry over.
Couldn't the same be said for Pirates 2 to 3? I mean, Pirates 1 made $300 million, and Pirates 2 could see a $100 million increase.
I think one thing to consider here is a possible backlash with Pirates of the Carribean 3 due to it being received critically a good bit less than its predecessor. The more I talk to people about it the more I get the feeling like after the rush of it being there, it was not that memorable. This could be kind of a Matrix sequels deal where POTC3 takes a considerable dive from POTC2. People seem to automatically think that POTC3 will do exactly what POTC2 is doing, but that might not be the case, which opens the door even more for Shrek 3.
It's a possiblity. I don't think POTC 3 will pull off a POTC 2, simpy because I feel Pirates 2's advantage was that it delivered what people had been looking for all summer: a big, epic, fun, funny adventure; something that some felt Superman Returns didn't deliver (although, that's up for debate, I guess). However, with Spidey 3 and Shrek 3 likely to deliver the summer goods all by themselves (going by your lovely "precedent"
), I'm not sure if Pirates 3 will have that factor that Pirates 2 had.
