Brian Tyler composer for Dragonball?

Bruce Faulconer's terrible music was used for DBZ, not Dragonball.

No way!. Bruce Faulconer´s music was great. Was 100 times better than the "atari-nintendo late 80s" japanese music.

Bruce Faulconer´s DBZ music really fit into the story, unlike its counterpart, the japanese one. Yeah, I know the japanese music was the original one used, but it sucked in my opinion. With the exception of the score when Goku is gathering all the energy from around the world with the help from Mr Satan in the last episodes, that one was epic, but that was the exception.

Anyways Brian Tyler is the perfect choice for this movie.

i didnt think the dbz music was bad. i actually liked it. although the DBGT theme sucked it hardcore and i hated it!

the american music used in dbz sucks, i just cant stand it, if the american dub had the japanese music i think id be able to stand their voices, but together with that music its just unbearable
the japanese music is better in every sense for dragonball/Z

i hope brian tyler likes the japanese version better

Scott Morgan here, while I did say those things JAPPO quoted me on, I want to clarify a few points.



The music I have very mixed feelings on. The "Faulconer" music was a made by a company with more than one person in it. You can even see that in some credits, where it says Original Music: Bruce Faulconer\Faulconer Productions Music.

Some of it is really good but some of it is awful. And no, I didn't like many of the synths that were used or the fact that there was never any silence.

Assuming that Bruce always uses synth is actually wrong. It's about budget\time and not the composer in this case (as he has stated in a public interview)

Both Bruce and myself have written for and had music played by real full orchestra. As much as I don't like the guy I do have to give him props that that is his biggest strength. He's dern good with a live orchestra. The DBZ community would not know it though because he was never given that kind of time\budget for DBZ. He even says that in an interview somewhere I think.

Hell, I actually have pretty strong confidence in myself as an orchestral composer...I'm greener than Bruce in that regard but I do have experience and full on training in that arena.

Anyway, I visited Brian's Myspace page a few weeks ago and was very impressed Should be a great score.

You wouldn’t see a big improvement if you were to translate what was written for Dragonball Z into a live orchestral setting. The music is just weak. When Bach’s music is arranged for synthesizers as it was by Wendy Carlos, it still sounds fantastic, even revelatory for the unique perspective cast on the music by the synthesizers’ novel sound qualities. I mean, the Kikuchi score is so far above what Faulconer did that it’s not even funny.

^^ yeah it was funny where it was used there. Dr Gero looked like a friggin carnival ride gone awry in that scene.

The original scene was actually earlier though in the Garlic Jr Saga when the "Spice Boys" were beating up Gohan.

Bach? Hell yeah it comes through. He was a master of counterpoint and harmony, that's something that shows through no matter what instrument its played on. Rock music is a completely different story though, and so is DBZ music, no matter which version you are talking about.

Perhaps even more worth noting in reference to this particular situation, Bach was also a master of practicality. If only certain instrumentalists were available to him to play a piece scored for another set of instruments, he would rearrange the previous piece to suit the resources he was given. You adapt to what you have. If the rock music you’re composing doesn’t function well with the textures of a synthesizer, consider writing in a more content-centered style. Even in traditional orchestration, you always tailor the way you write to the advantages and disadvantages of each instrument. The synthesizers are just another set of instruments.
