Fantasy Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel the Vampire - Part 3

The tiny town with one street, one club, a beach (sometimes), university campus and 1000 cemeteries.

I think, fundamentally, the problem with Buffy was that it was envisioned as a teen drama. . . and then kept getting renewed for enough seasons that everyone *should* have grown up and aged out of being teens. Only, they kind of didn't, not in any satisfying way. Maybe this was intentional, but I suspect it was simply that even Whedon didn't imagine the show would last that long, and so when he designed the characters and their arcs during s1, there wasn't any forethought about how to keep them compelling characters once they ceased to be able to run on teenage angst.

I’m not sure that the latter seasons had pushed past the series’ core premise — monsters as metaphor for teen angst. But it was on the border. So in my view, season seven was a good place to stop. Thus, I never got the appeal of any continuing/sequel adventures of adult Buffy and the Scoobies. That always struck me as dubious. I.e., vampire slayage is a young person’s game. :word:

I mean...they were what? 22-23 by the time the show ended in S7? Most don't see that drastic of a change in attitude by then. Especially when you stay in your hometown.

Realistically speaking, sure. Dramatically speaking, when you've set up a big chunk of your thematics as "allegory for growing up"? Its a problem, a borderline "mandatory failure" problem. As a symbol, graduating *should* have constituted a real meaningful change for the cast, where they at least make *some* progress on their path to becoming Fully Actualized Adult People.

willow and tara were in school, giles ran the shop, buffy had to drop out and xander got a real job. was he the only one adulting?

Surprisingly yes. He and Anya.

I always wished that Buffy went back to college, writers always act like there's no story there. Forcing yourself to get up and go to class is HELL

There was no college just a crazy woman and her chimera. :o

Im so sad that Buffering is like 1 episode away from finishing the series. If anyone ever needs a good podcast, thats a great one.

Im hearing this podcast since some weeks during driving to work. And while I sometimes rolling with my eyes since they pushing the patriarchy-card way too hard, the podcast is very good, indeed. The guests and interviews (per example principle Snyder) are awesome.

I am in the middle of season 2 and curious: Will they address the behind the scenes drama with Cordelia, Dawn and specially Joss Whedon? They are super positive on Whedon so far and Im interested how they will react to this.

they do address it briefly but not that much. The Charisma/Michelle drama are largely untouched as they focus on the episodes and how they treat characters at times

I’m still slowly trekking through the show. Halfway through episode 13 “dead things” in season 6

i still don’t like this whole Buffy/spike storyline. Does it get better? It just feels parasitic and slightly toxic. Clearly Buffy is spiraling and no one is approached about it. Y’all brought her back to life. You had to know it wouldn’t be perfect and back to normal. Especially after she admitted she was at peace in death. No big sit down to talk about it. At the very least, I’d expect Xander to be the one to do it for some odd reason.

I want to say no? Well I guess it does a little bit before.......

And I'm surprised that therapy wasnt a thing that the writers brought into this season.

It does not get better in that season, no. I literally have to skip most of S6 on my rewatches. S7 is not their best season either, but it’s not their worst, and it’s a MUCH easier and more enjoyable watch with some great episodes, imo.

It’s just weird because I’m not enjoying Buffy this season when i really enjoyed S5. I’m really enjoying Angel right now even though that’s the show I was watching and Buffy is new (to me). Last Angel show I watched was the one with summer glau as a ballerina and I liked this episode as much as I did 20 years ago. (Whoa that makes me old). I’m trying to watch alternatingly but Angel is far more fun to watch right now for me.

I think that’s the most common opinion on those two seasons, tbh. S3 is one of Angel’s best while S6 is one of Buffy’s worst.

Sometimes in my mind it does end at Season Five to me too.

I mean again, that was a tall order to try to top the intensity and the emotions in that season.

Dead mom, sister is secretly the end of the world, and killing God metaphor. Sounds like a Final Fantasy game to me. :o

Season 6 is hazy to me, I just recall it being particularly.....hormonal. Season 7 I'm pretty sure I haven't even watched all the episodes in that Season.

Season 7 had some good ideas but the execution was just all over the damn place. Got annoyed with them shoving certain characters down our throats and at times writing Buffy OOC.

Something I've wondered is whether they ran out of money during the final season. Felt like 75% of the season took place inside Buffy's house.

Seriously, it was either Buffy's house, Spike's crypt or the school.

They also really dropped the ball in not casting someone to be The First.
