Fantasy Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel the Vampire - Part 3

...They also really dropped the ball in not casting someone to be The First.

Well... In his season 3 appearance, The First haunted Angel as various dead people. And this MO carried over to season 7. I suppose TPTB might have come up with a pretext to explain why, in S7, The First appears only as a specific ghost — to be played by a specific actor. But then… why bring back this particular villain at all? Why not just invent a new Big Bad?

Seriously, it was either Buffy's house, Spike's crypt or the school.

They also really dropped the ball in not casting someone to be The First.
The First was such a crap, boring, disappointing villain. I recall that being when I checked out early from Season 7.

In a way Buffy had the reverse big bads to bookend the series; the First would have been an acceptable beginning villain, while everything about The Master screamed final boss.

I loved The First as the final villain, sure could've been done better but still well above a lot of shows.

The problem with S7 is that Spike is to important and becomes the 2nd lead after Buffy. We were supposed to go back to basics and that means The Scooby Gang is the core of the show.

Yeah I remember Xander being kind of there. At least Willow gets a new girl and a power up.

Season 6 is hazy to me, I just recall it being particularly.....hormonal. Season 7 I'm pretty sure I haven't even watched all the episodes in that Season.
Depressing and rapey. Don't forget those. :o

so i just finished the episode from Season 6 last night of Riley's return. I didn't hate him? But buffy really disappointed me i think?

her relationship with Spike is a mess. She is a mess. and no one seems to notice or care. willow's dealing with her addiction and breakup, xander and anya are planning a wedding. like how are they the most stable on the show right now? giles is englanding and dawn is getting a raw deal. she's a teen and she's not being taken care of. buffy comes home from working the burger place, runs into spike outside her house and goes on a quick tirade about how she needs to take care of dawn and feed her and how she's counting on her.. and next thing you know they're having a quickie in the yard :eyeroll:

spike being the doctor or whatever was a super quick one and done plot. and buffy should have been done with him then but noooo

also, while riding in the car with riley, they basically say they have some catching up to do. and she says something like "did you die? if not, i win". total paraphrase I can't remember. and he didn't even ask her about it! she brings it up occasionally and no one asks how she's dealing or coping or even functioning. there is obviously a lot of trauma from that and she never gets to talk about it.

end of rant lol

Season 6 is basically the season where everyone is selfish, miserable and don't communicate. It's very hit-or-miss, and can test your patience.

Something I've wondered is whether they ran out of money during the final season. Felt like 75% of the season took place inside Buffy's house.

The brief Uber-vamp army shots must have eaten into the budget. I guess there were quite a lot of guest stars too. So much time time in Buffy's house.... I missed the Magic Box

The whole reason it moved to UPN was because they got an increase in budget and UPN wanted an 8th season. I think they wanted the season to feel a bit claustrophobic and save money towards the finale.

A niche within a niche, but the ridiculous (and very fun) video game Broforce is getting an unexpected major update next year. It's a 2D sde-scrolling action game that features a bunch of familiar heroes from pop culture. It's a few years old but adding new content in 2023. Our beloved vampire slayer looks to be among the new playable characters on the way.

Very pleasant surprise for me. It's a great couch co-op game.

still haven't finished buffy but just finished a solid 3-ep arc in angel where the last episode shows Connor coming back through the portal.

i'm going to try to finish both seasons by end of the year

We can all blame Willow for that. :o

I finished my rewatch of "Angel" a few weeks ago, and i have to say the all lighting during this spin-off show was really annoying - way too dark. And I have to say after season 2 the show got a little too ridiculous and they made Angel's character way too...silly in times.
I liked it much less then i did in the original run of the show.
Honestly - Amy Acker(Fred) was the reason(Maybe Wesley, too) I didn't quit the rewatch after season 3.

i just met Dark Willow last episode, after she flayed Warren.

finished season 3 of angel last night. connor still bothers me, something about his face and his smirks too. sorry Vincent.
cordy got the shaft. i enjoyed Lilah way more this time around, and wesley dismissing her after hooking up was great, but also kinda funny because it reminded me of when he pretended to be a rogue demon hunter.

they way connor decided death was too easy for angel was cold man. wonder if justine helped him think of it. she's totally remorseless. knows the truth and angel had just saved her recently and she still don't care lol

two more episodes of season 6 of buffy and i'm almost to the end. that episode of spike trying to force himself on her was kinda rough. i still haven't figured out why people wanted them together so much. just not my bag. eh. anyways, hope to try and finish the show by the end of the year? i don't even remember when i started. i'll check backwards eventually

So I’m I. Season 7. Episode 12 I think? Anyways all these potentials floating around has me wondering about something from season 5.
When Buffy died sacrificing herself, was another slayer activated? Or was it just Faith because there were two?

Faith was (and still is in S7) the “active” Slayer, as Buffy is the anomaly that shouldn’t exist, so there would only be another called if Faith died.

In one of the S7 episodes, I think Buffy says something along the lines of “When I die, one of these girls [Potentials] will become the new Slayer.” Possible explanations: 1) (Headcanon) — Somehow, Buffy’s resurrection reset the Slayer line back to her. 2) Buffy knew that Faith was, technically, the Slayer; but she embellished for dramatic effect…? :ebr: 3) The writers goofed.

I'll take the bolded for $200 Alex.

Seriously Season 7 was such a mixed bag. Like there are times I loved Buffy the character, then there were times when she was just unrecognizable.

There is a lot of shaky lore in season 7. My interpretation of the slayer line thing is that Faith was the 'active' slayer as of Buffy's death in season 5 and so no-one was called; but the resurrection caused Buffy to be reinserted into the equation, disrupting the order of it. This gels with the vague description of the line being 'altered' and why The First chose to strike.

The season tosses out a bunch of macguffins though and it's clear that the overall plot is pretty under-cooked. Buffy as a whole was not the best at that tbh.

That might be what triggered my question. Cuz the potentials are training now.

piggybacking on Angel again, Connor annoys me this time around too. His face is so smug lol. He’s so whiny.

I also was annoyed that the episode Buffy was making out with the student because of his letterman jacket was basically concurrently the same as when cordy and Connor shacked up. kinda icky

Funnily enough, I remember around this same time both Xander and Cordy used the term 'teenage snits' in episodes lol.

Most of S7 is a snooze fest (granted S6 had a similar problem) and speechifying Buffy didn't feel right. She's not a character that does a lot of speeches.
Faith's return (and Angel appearing in the final two episodes) made it palatable. And even Faith felt out of character at times.

First three seasons remain pretty awesome.

Welp now I I know what to look forward to :/
