The Dark Knight Rises Can it be topped?

Can it be topped?

  • Yes-I trust Nolan and company will bring the goods.

  • No-TDK is the ultimate high and can’t be topped.

I'm sorry but that kind of one-liner could have easily been on BB.
I think it even could have been in TDK. IMO, it's on par with, "Will you be wanting the batpod, sir?" "In the middle of the day, Alfred? Not very subtle." "Da lamborghini den. Much more subtle."

And that's CHEASY???..

This.

Almost every single one liner in the middle of action, is cheap, and unfunny.

What annoys me is that the one liners keep getting inserted into, not scenes that should be serious, which would be okay (And worked with Joker's intro to the mob), but actual MOMENTS that should be serious.

There's a helicopter crashing and rolling toward the cops, and I'm going "Oh my God they'll be crushed", and then Officer Goofy goes "Ok this is NOT good!"

I'm like, are these actors Nolan's friends or something?

Was that guy in the first film?

I get that humor can be used to lessen tension, but this is NOT the time to be doing that. I've seen very few moments in these franchises where the writers get that approach right.

Really?

Exactly. Most Summer films strive for that balance, and when you have people involved that are inherently funny (Like RDJ) playing an already eccentric style character, it works extremely well. But then when it's forced (which a lot of the stuff in IM2 wound up being) even he can't save it. And therein lies the rub. How much of it is really necessary? Does Batman saying excuse me to Asylum inmates REALLY need to be in there, for comic relief that provides neither comedy nor relief? I mean, honestly?

What made the Schumacher line so bad was just the thought of Batman driving through McDonalds in the batmobile lol That line in TDK was humerous but nothing ridiculous like Batman ordering fast food. Kilmer's Batman probably wasn't even joking either.

Had that been in BB or TDK I'd have imagined Batman using the tumbler to mow through McDonalds.

"WHERE'S MY DOUBLE CHEESBURGER?"
"I don't know I swear to god"
"SWEAR TO ME!"

But Goyer didn't write that joke, a Nolan did....a Nolan!

The Guard hit it right on the head. The big issue is that these "breaks in tension" are happening when tension is necessary.

Take the exploding helicopter scene. We can safely assume that the officers inside died from either the impact of hitting the ground, or the resulting explosion. Fellow officers die, and what does the SWAT guy do? He cracks a joke.

It's not realistic, and it's disturbingly inappropriate given the circumstance. No cop would be making jokes left and right while his fellow officers were being run down by semi trucks and knocked out of the sky.

As I watched TDK for the first time at the midnight premiere, I was honest to God rolling my eyes every time that SWAT guy showed up on screen, during a scene that should have had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. The inclusion of that character was an absolute crime.

But it's not ridiculous to see Bruce Wayne riding around on the Bat-pod in the middle of the day?

Yeah it is but Alfred was just joking I took it. He knows Batman only operates during the day. And the joke mostly relied on Alfred. On the other hand in BF it was Batman that delivered the corny line and he was serious about it too. This makes it way worse.

Bahhh, it's both a corny set-up, to a corny "punchline". Both are pretty bad, if you ask me.

I'm more of a fan of Joker at the drive-thru. :awesome:

I don't recall Kilmer's Batman being cheesy at all. 'I'll get drive-thru.' could easily have been witty banter.

Well I suppose so. I guess it just has to be extremely bad and ill fitting in context for me to really dislike it. While I thought the BF line was corny, that's still nothing compared to some of the B&R stuff, that's just too much even for me.

"It's the car right? Chicks love the car"
On rubber suit: "Try firemen, less to take off"
"I don't blend in at a picnic"

Off the top of my head and I'm sure there are others. These are Adam West type lines. When you can imagine Adam West saying them that is when you know they are just too corny.

And Bat-mite, love that Joker pic lol

I'll always have a soft spot for Kilmer and Forever...

Well me too, overall I thought Kilmer was decent as Batman and especially good as Bruce Wayne.

And another thing is that for me, corniness does not make or break a movie. I was just earlier discussing this in another thread. It all depends on if it fits in the context of the movies. If anything, the cheesy lines in BF are a bit more passable than in Nolan's movies because Nolan presents a more serious tone. No one would question in BF if Gordon cracked a joke as Riddler was draining brains wearing his leotard and pink hair. But on the other hand some here do not like the cops who were joking as the helicopter plummeted in TDK.

Batman Returns is my favorite Batman film and I think it is a complete cornfest in certain parts. I literally cant stop laughing when I see Penguin riding a rubber duck and talking to rocket powered penguins calling them his babies.

Oh yes, there was no shortage of cheese in Returns. There's a reason why Burton considers it to be a lighter film than the first one. "Bruce Wayne, why are you dressed up like Batman?" :awesome:

I actually thought that was the single perfect reaction to someone who did not know Wayne but found out he was Batman. A lot of people would probably think it was a prank at first or that Bruce Wayne was just joking lol But yeah, there's a lot of cheesy happenings in BR.

And I'll even say there were a few elements I thought Schumacher did the best renditions of in BF...better than Nolan and Burton. Such as Arkham Island and the batcave. His Arkham was perfectly gothic and spooky. And schumacher's batcave was all cool and high tech with super computers, turn table, etc but still not over the top with the dinosaur and giant penny.

I've never been a fan of the batcave in Burton's movies, it's too scary looking for me and Nolan's batcave is just a normal batcave lol. He'll probably add a computer in it the next film.

Not only do I agree with this, I'll also add, that I think the "corny" joke was intentional in Forever. It showed us that this isn't going to be a serious Bat-flick like the past movies. It was the first line in the movie. Yes, it was cheesy as all hell, but it was setting us up for the direction of the movie. You're not supposed to take Forever serious.:cwink:

I like Burton's Batcave, mainly the one in B89. The one in Returns wasn't horrible, it just wasn't great....it felt extremely small to me.

Aw, I love that line from TDK.

The cave in BATMAN RETURNS was small?

His workstations, maybe.

And that's just the lower level.

The thing about BATMAN FOREVER one liners...

Some of them actually had meaning. Batman didn't just say these things for the hell of it. They were jokes, but they weren't just jokes, and Kilmer sold them wonderfully, and they set up other lines from Chase. The character was actually trying to diffuse an uncomfortable situation with humor here, it wasn't a case of making the audience more comfortable .

"I'll get drive thru" is a little cheesy, but it was also a clear attempt to show that he'd lightened up from the get go, but not completely. That he was comfortable enough in his mission to rib Alfred about his habits.

And I'll always love "Holey metal ground, Batman!"

Yes.

I wouldn't even have a problem if he said some things or reacted...but in a comical manner? Or anything that can be remotely interpreted that way? No.

I'm sorry, but I believe you give Goldsman way too much credit. Apart from the "holey metal ground" line, which I love, too.

Akiva Goldsman has written other movies than BATMAN FOREVER BATMAN & ROBIN (and LOST IN SPACE). He's not always on, but when he is, he's usually very good. The Batman/Chase rooftop scene in FOREVER speaks for itself. It's fairly apparent what's going on between them.
