Captain Marvel General Discussion and Speculation - Part 1

It is being made because:

1) She is Marvel's best link between Cosmic Marvel and Global Level Heroes like the Avengers. She connects to both universes.
2) She is Marvel's top female character and is near the top of Marvel's second tier of heroes alongside other characters being released this Phase like Black Panther and Dr. Strange.

Once you get past Hulk, Iron Man, Cap, and Thor, she would naturally be on the shortlist of next heroes to do.

Who would you guys cast as Mar-Vell?
Jensen Ackles? Orlando Bloom? Aaron Eckhart? Scott Porter? Mike Vogel?

Out of that list, only Aaron Eckhart. Jensen Ackles is whom you might cast if Captain Marvel were on the CW. :o

And no to Orlando Bloom. Mar-Vell can't look like he can be beaten up by Carol before she even gains her powers.

There is a Mar-Vell thread here:

So, alcoholism.
They've danced around the issue when it comes to Tony Stark, but do you think they'd be more willing to explore it with Carol to give her character some depth and an achilles heel?

I don't think they should go there. The MCU's first female movie and she's an alcoholic?

Are these fitted T-shirts or loose baggy ones? I hate when T-shirts are too baggy, especially with the sleeves. They particularly make people look like they work in a comic shop.
Fitted, and Kelly Sue approved!

And no thanks to the alcoholism. At least not for a few movies. Carol's got enough flaws to be interesting without it, and that particular kind of angst works against the primary appeal of her personality for me.

Also agreed. I'm happy if they show that Carol likes a good drink when out socialising with friends, celebrating or after a rough day at work. But, that's about the extent of her drinking that I would like to see.

Other than Mar-Vell, what supporting cast would everyone like to see in Captain Marvel? Would Rick Jones work? Chewie? An iron-free James Rhodes? Kamala? Wasp? Abigail Brand? Jessica Drew? Jessica Jones? Simon Williams?

I think Rhodey could work quite well, although they'll need an excuse for why he doesn't suit up. Or he could suit up, but still be out-classed by Captain Marvel once she develops her powers. I wouldn't mind a female friend for Captain Marvel as well. But, I'm not sure who it should be. Maybe Abigail Brand who initially tried to recruit Carol Danvers to join SWORD, but Carol refused in preference for remaining in the air-force, but they remainder friends?

I'd love to see Rhodey in the supporting cast of this. He and Carol are good together, imo. I think Kamala could sort of be used in the role that Kit, her neighbor's little girl, regularly serves in the comics - the kid next door who idolizes her. Chewie is a must, along with at least one of her female friends. Carol has several, so I'm not picky, but Jessica Drew would be awesome. If they want a non-superhero type, though, her former boss (and now cancer-stricken friend) Tracy Burke seems like a good bet. Maybe even Carol's aviation hero and mentor, Helen Cobb.

Aren't Carol's parents a big part of her back story, or am I thinking of another character?

Well, her dad was a bit of an a-hole who didn't believe women belonged in the military and she pretty much disowned him when she turned 18 and signed up. I'm pretty sure her mom was kinda resentful of this, seeing it as Carol turning her back on her whole family, and they (at least her dad) never supported or accepted what she became. I feel like her mom came around eventually but yeah, they're not big in her life at this point, though they certainly played a big part in making her the who she is.

Bringing Kamala Khan in Captain Marvel would be interesting. She could also have a small role in the Inhumans as well.

Oh, okay. I'm just remembering her stint with the Busiek Avengers and her alcohol problem and Iron Man visits her and it was her parents house I thought, but it probably was just her mother's home.

Btw THIS was the best tribute I could find for Carol on youtube. It's a start.

Who isn't an alcoholic in the Marvel universe? ;)

Wasn't her Dad one of those really old fashioned throwback types who believed women in general should just get married, stay in the kitchen and take care of kids instead of having actual educations and careers, etc? I seem to remember reading that due to financial issues he refused to pay for Carol to go to college, sending one of her brothers instead, simply because he believed she didn't deserve it or couldn't handle it, despite the fact that she was smarter than both of her brothers and had better grades than either of them, so joining the military was partly to pay for her education. My memory may be a little rusty there.

I can see Katee Sackhoff for Carol. But I'm also into the idea of Gwendoline Christie. I just want someone who's not too tiny and not too young. I'm sick of all these waif's meant to be playing these tall commanding women. Someone with a bit of height and muscle would be good. Someone not too young either, Carol isn't a teeny bopper, she's a grown woman with a serious role in the military.

Yep, I believe that's correct.

Maybe Marvel should make a movie with Carol, Tony and Rocket all drinking their brains out along the Bowery. :o

The first female-led Marvel film and you want them to cast the actress who most resembles a man?

lol why not

And Katee Sackhoff is already too old in 2014, let alone for a 2018 release

Im not advocating KS, but at 34, she is not too old. Without knowing how old they plan on making Carol, if they follow the books, she should be early to mid 30s. This movie will film ~2016-2017. A 36-37 year old can easily play the role. Its the women close to 40 that should be out of the running due to age

I think Monica Rambeau would make a cool supporting cast member. If she showed up I'd get Samira Wiley to play her.

I can almost see reason in the claim that Charlize is too old at 39, when you factor in she'd actually be 43 when filming starts. Almost.

But 34? Get off the crazy pills.

And it'd be hilarious every time Gwen Christie stood next to RDJ. Forget platform shoes, they'd have to get him a horse to sit on to film those scenes.

Carol and Rhodey have a "thing" going on in the comics right now, so it'd be cool if he popped up in this movie. Plus they have the military thing in common.

Seeing Kamala would be awesome. I'd probably just have her in a small role as a teenager who's life Carol saves, or who she interacts with, at some point in the movie. Then they can increase her role in future films.

I kind of also want to see Kit (the adorable little girl who Carol bonded with during KSD's run) to appear.

Of course there's Jessica Drew, be she Spider-Woman yet or not.

CHEWIE (also mention Carol's love of SW, you know you want to Marvel).

And also Abigail Brand if they want to do the SWORD thing from the EMH cartoon. Also, Brand is a badass.

Ugh,after putting up the alcoholism subplot on Arrow for as long as I have,I could do without it.But I doubt they would do it in the first place. After all,IM had the more famous storyline with that affliction and they rendered it a foot note.(And for good reason, when you consider it's a film, not a tv series.)

OMG!! Gwendoline Christie would be great!!

As for her looking like "a man," well, is it because she's really super tall? It's her makeup as Brienne of Tarth that makes her look a certain way.

When she's not in that....

She's a striking figure.

I'd love it if the went with someone who didn't adhere to conventional "feminine", idealized physical appearances.
