Captain Marvel General Discussion and Speculation - Part 1

What's this about Marvel going after Jolie to direct CM?

It's more the principle that annoys me. "We're pushing back the black and female-led movies that you guys have been asking for so that we can make yet another movie starring a pasty white guy, his SIXTH movie in fifteen years." Nice priorities there Marvel.

It does look a little bad, I'm not going to deny that.

Or it could mean more time to make those properties really shine?

Doubt it. If they cannot do that in 2-4 years, then an extra few months probably won't make much difference. And it's obvious why they're doing this, because Spidey is a "bigger name" so to speak.

C'mon. It's not like they completely dropped either Black Panther or Cap'n Marvel from their schedule. Does pushing them back a few months really matter?

Yes, Peter Parker is a pasty white guy, but he's also SPIDER FRICKIN' MAN! It would make sense to cry foul if BP/CM were pushed aside for Ant-Man 2 or Moon Knight or something like that. But how can you blame Marvel for wanting to put their company's flagship character in a prime sport? Race and gender has little to do with this. Thor 3 and the Inhumans got pushed back as well.

Also, to be fair, it's not just those two they pushed anyway. It's really more of everyone is a peasant compared to Spidey in their eyes. Which I can understand to a degree. :funny:

I'm not too sad about it. It's just a few months and it's almost a guarantee that we'll see her in another film prior to this. The July spot is a better spot than November though but things can still be shuffled so who knows...?

I understand their logic, however I'm more interested in seeing new characters never before brought to the screen than the sixth Spider-man.

Agreed. I'm super-excited to have Spidey in the MCU. I'm less excited for another solo Spidey movie than I am for Captain Marvel, though. And tbh, I NEED to see this movie succeed and I really think that July spot, right after IW: Pt.1, was the best possible spot for her. I mean, it's a good spot for Black Panther, too, but Captain Marvel made a lot more sense coming after Infinity War than he did, since she's the Earth/cosmic MCU "bridge" character.

And poor Inhumans, too. Now it's coming after IW completely. It's gonna miss that hype train.

They should just bump up BP to 2016. You've got the time and space. You've already got your lead actor and I'm sure a script. And you will have just set him up a few months earlier in CIVIL WAR. Then put Carol and the Inhumans back in their original slots. Only THOR really gets shafted but RAGNAROK is super important so best to take your sweet time with that one. And it would lead directly into IW which makes sense.

And that's just one more reason not to be interested in yet another Spider-Man reboot.

Don't get me wrong, it's great that Spidey is now in the MCU. However, this has been one big fear about Marvel getting the rights to him, X-Men, and FF back. That it would be too tempting to focus them. That it'd be predominantly Avengers, X-Men, Spider-Man, and FF because they're the "big guns." If Marvel had the rights to those franchises from day one, would be have gotten GOTG, or Ant-Man, or BP, or CM, or at least gotten them this early. I have my doubts.

And the fact that they're pushing back all of their Phase Three movies except for Doctor Strange and the Avengers films JUST so that they can do a Spidey movie FIRST doesn't do anything to assuage those fears. You want to do a Spidey movie, that's great. But why can't you do it AFTER BP, CM, and Inhumans?

Captain Marvel should be barely affected by this move. It goes from in between IW1 and IW2 to...in between IW1 and IW2.

Bu... but it's going from 41 months away to 45 months away! How will we cope? This cannot stand! It was practically right around the corner and now only my freakishly mutated future descendants will be able to see it!

I think I'll feel better once we start hearing some rumblings on shortlists and stuff.

Ditto here too…

I vented my spleen about this last night, but today, I think with some of the doubting going on here and on Twitter, I've chosen to think more positively about the move.

It does give Marvel more time to fully develop both BP and CM and find the best possible candidates for casting and directing. It gives BP room to thrive away from Justice League. November's proven to be a great month for female properties (GRAVITY/HUNGER GAMES/FROZEN….) so maybe CM will continue that tradition.

It doesn't look good that they moved their first hero of color and female led movies, but they also shifted THOR 3 and INHUMANS completely to Phase IV. I don't see it as anything other than a business move by Feige and Marvel and Sony.

And actually, I was always more inclined to want BP and CM closer together too. I just like that Marvels' introducing so many new heroes, and 2018 seems to be year for origins :)

We may still get Carol Danvers before then as well in another Marvel movie.

Is Inhumans confirmed for Phase 4?

I don't think they've confirmed where the Phases will end, but it's post Avengers Infinity War pt. 2 so that's probably Phase 4.

But, at the same time, isn't Ant-Man still considered phase 2?

Yep, that's why I'm not taking it for granted without a confirmation. Still, Infinity War seems like such a big event that it had better end the phase.

I am guessing Inhumans is gonna be the Ant-Man of phase 3.

Yeah, I am disappointed that these movies got pushed back for another solo Spider-Man movie. But the positive side is that these movies potentially have more lead time to be the best they can be. That and possible character interactions between Danvers and Parker.
