Captain Marvel General Discussion and Speculation - Part 1

Jessica Drew is Carol's bestie, so I would expect Jessica to be in the film. I don't believe in this rule that a white character needs to have a black sidekick.

Heh, well there is no such rule. It's just something Hollywood movies (and tv, and comics, etc) tends to do a lot. Ant-Man doesn't have one (to my knowledge)...

I've made an argument that Emily Blunt would be perfect for Jessica Drew. I'm not sure she'd take the role of a supporting character, though, even if it's one with story potential down the line.

I'm really curious as to how they'll handle Mar-Vell. On the one hand, obviously in the comics, he was still around as Captain Marvel long after Carol got powers. On the other, Marvel's making a Captain Marvel movie about Carol Danvers, so presumably Mar-Vell's gotta leave the picture pretty quickly for her to be THE Captain Marvel. Not sure how long he'd be around to help her with her powers. Regardless, that was just a random example. My point was that Monica could be in the movie without having to replace Jess as her best friend.

As for her getting help at the end, I'm just referring to the kind of help most of the heroes have gotten in their climaxes, Steve getting the help from Peggy, Col. Phillips and the troops, Tony getting help from Pepper and Coulson/SHIELD (and even in small part from Rhodey), etc. The hero doesn't usually stand ENTIRELY alone in the final action sequence, just when they get to the main baddie. Obviously Carol would be the one doing the heavy-lifting (literally and figuratively, lol).

Yeah whenever I see that argument I just shake my head a little. There's nothing about either character that precludes the other from appearing.

Well, it's not an MCU movie without the Black Sidekick, so expect Carol's to be:

It will be very disappointing if Monica is not in this one, but I would not be surprised if she was left out. I don't know how much flack Marvel would get if both Monica and Misty Knight are absent from the MCU.

Marvel puts both Monica in this and Misty in Iron Fist and every known black actress between the ages of 25-45 not named Rosario Dawson and Zoe Saldana will be linked to both parts. It opens the playing field for names like Meagan Good, Tessa Thompson, Nicole Beharie, Paula Patton, Taraji P. Henson, Yaya DeCosta, Lupita Nyong'o etc to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The franchise as a whole has taken so much flack for the lack of diversity and it looks like they're finally changing gears a little, so I would not be surprised if Monica did appear in some capacity.

She's an interesting case though where she's a very talented actress but not exactly a huge star or household name. She could be interested if only for exposure and continued gig. (Assuming Jess is even in it).

Unless that character is being considered for a specific role that would be better suited for someone else, such as Mar-Vell's role as Carol's guide and mentor. Giving that role to Monica wouldn't make much sense. This isn't to say that Monica can't show up in the film in some capacity.

I think she said before that she would be interested in a Marvel role as long as it's the superhero. My understanding is she was reluctant to be Peggy Carter because she didn't want to just be the love interest. On the other hand, she basically agreed to be Black Widow before Fox stepped in and told her she had other obligations instead.

If this movie is Carol Danvers in space (as I've seen suggestions it is), there isn't much room for Jessica Drew. So I think she'd only take it if she's assured there are bigger plans than sidekick in the future for her.

Yeah I'm still not convinced Drew will be in the movie either, but it's a possibility. She could still play another Marvel heroine down the line, I guess.

Not everything happens exactly as it does in the comics so all it'd require is soe minor rewriting if that were the case.

Nobody who watches Marvel movies regularly believes that the movies don't deviate from source material, but I just don't see how Carol's story would benefit at all by having a human woman be her guide and mentor from her new powers. Mar-Vell just makes a lot more sense. Carol's powers are alien, so who better than alien to be her guide? It also gives Carol that connection to the cosmic part of the universe.

Anyway, yeah. Love to see Monica, so I hope they can find a way to work her in.

So, Chris Pratt revealed he's signed up for three Guardians movies and two other movies. Any thoughts about Peter Quill showing up in CM? I'm not too crazy about other superheroes showing up in Carol's first solo venture, especially if it turns out to be an origin story, but Starlord is pretty awesome, and I'd love to see those two interact on film.

Starlord would try try to hit on her, but Carol would just roll her eyes or say something along the lines of "Peter, don't ruin the moment" while she's rescuing him. Just like the comics. Peter Quill is one cool dude, but he couldn't handle Carol! Anyways, I think a Guardians 3/CM2 would be more likely. It would be interesting how they would do that since Carol would be incredibly overpowered compared to the Guardians.

I hope Carol and Rocket Raccoon interact with each other the same way they did in the comics recently, where Rocket tries to kill her cat because it's an egg laying alien.

Considering who Marvel has selected as screenwriters for the movie, does anyone have any idea of the tone of the movie or speculate on how the script may play out?

BleedingCool reckon Carol's Captain Marvel costume is a 'lock' for the movie, so those debates can end

And yet, somehow I doubt they will.

On a side note, I can't wait 'til Secret Wars is over. I don't keep up with the group books, and I just read the 1st issue of Captain Marvel and the Carol Corps going "WTF" the whole time. Feels like total filler nonsense that will be erased before we know it when everything's rebooted at the end (and I feel that way about all of these "Battleworld" stories). This is exactly why I hate the big "events."

typically, I'd agree
I haven't read an event book since I dropped Fear Itself half way through
that said, picked up Secret Wars, if only to bear witness to 'the end' of the 616 I know, and it was actually really kinda good

as long as you're not the type who hates alt reality stories, it's quite solid
Didn't read Capt Marvel Corps though, so I can't speak for that tie-in, Old Man Logan was good though

I typically don't mind alt reality stories, as long as they're their own thing on the side. Like DC's Elseworlds and stuff like that. But when the whole main continuity for these characters becomes an alt reality story, it just bugs.

That said, I haven't picked up the main Secret Wars book. Guess that would help, lol.

I think it's extremely likely too, but BleedingCool calling it a lock is completely irrelevant, so I doubt it'll affect the debates, nor should it.

BC is reporting today on some major changes in store for the comic after Secret Wars
but that's all they said, vague "big changes", no details whatsoever

I never doubted they would use the Captain Marvel costume. I sincerely hope they dump the ridiculous helmet and mohawk for the movies. In fact, I hope they dump it real soon in the comics as well. The longer they use it, the more likely it's going to be a permanent staple of Carol and not go away. I just don't get the appeal of that look. I think Marvel should get rid of her red gloves as well for the movies.

stop calling it a mohawk!
lol, sorry

It's a faux-hawk, and I don't care for it. Love the shorter hair (just a personal preference), don't like the faux-hawk.

As for Carol's supporting case, well Jessica Drew (be she Spider-Woman or not) did come to mind right away. Also, in the current CM comic, Carol and War Machine are dating. And since Rhodey most likely ain't getting his own movie anytime soon, maybe they could get Don Cheadle to appear in this movie. He and Carol don't even necessarily need to be a couple (or at least not yet), they do have a common Air Force background. So they could just be friends/colleagues/associates/etc.

As much as I love Jessica Drew, it's likely Carol won't have any human characters with her for a good part of the film. Mar-Vell should make an appearance. As far as Carol and Rhodey... I say meh. KSD made them a couple out of the blue for her series, yet Carol is in space the whole time. The idea of them being Air Force buddies and that's it seems much more likely.
