Captain Marvel General Discussion and Speculation - Part 1

Yeah I don't see WB putting Batman in November, unless they just really want to try to screw over Marvel

LR is reporting that The Batman could aim for Nov 2018 to compete with Cap Marvel.

That's crazy right? Batman can easily dominate July, or May...

Infinity War Part 1 is in May 2018, so it wont dominate if it goes there. Black Panther, Aquaman, Fox X-men project are all in July 2018.
However, April and June 2018 are both clear.

I don't buy the LR report, WB already has Fantastic Beasts sequel slated for Nov 2018, unless they push that to December 2018.

BP, Aquaman, and one of the X-spinoffs are all slated for the same month??
that sucks, it's gunna be a s***show

But why would want to do that? oh yeah because he's Batman! Lol I'm looking forward to the Batman movie I hope Leto/Robbie is in it, I can't explain my crazy crush on Harley Quinn its been there ever since I was a boy, :ilv: also I hope Captain Marvel is good too.

Apologies if this has been asked before, but what comics should I read to get to know Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers? Any compilations or anything like that?

Based on the logo they've chosen to use and the fact that they're calling her Captain Marvel, there's a good bet they're using Kelly Sue DeConnick's version (the current version) as a primary inspiration. That's been collected in several trades.

The 1st volume of her run was set on Earth, and it's collected in Captain Marvel Vol. 1: In Pursuit of Flight, Captain Marvel Vol. 2: Down and the final issues of that run are in an Avengers TPB, Avengers: The Enemy Within. Which is basically a Carol-centric Avengers story.

However, this movie is likely to have more cosmic involvement, based on what Feige said when he announced the film, so I personally feel her more recent run is closer to what we'll be getting in the film franchise. Kelly Sue's 2nd volume is an almost entirely cosmic one, with Carol traversing the universe, occasionally working with the Guardians of the Galaxy and all that. IMO, it's just as good a jumping on point as her 1st run. And currently, that's collected in 2 trades, Captain Marvel Vol. 1: Higher, Further, Faster, More and Captain Marvel Vol. 2: Stay Fly. The 3rd trade of that run is due out on September 1st.

Her 1st appearance as Captain Marvel in her current incarnation was actually in a Spider-Man arc like a month before KSD's 1st run made its debut. If you're interested in Peter and Carol's relationship (in a non-romantic sense), I'd highly recommend checking it out, as it's collected in the trade Avenging Spider-Man: The Good, The Green and the Ugly.

For her most notable original stories from decades ago, when she first made her debut as Ms. Marvel, you could check out Essential Ms. Marvel: Vol. 1. Some folks here might recommend Brian Reed's run with the character, as that was the most notable one to date before Kelly Sue DeConnick came along, but I personally wasn't a fan of the way he wrote her, so I'll leave that to someone else, lol.

It's worth noting that after Secret Wars is over, the character (along with the rest of the Marvel Universe) is starting a new run, this time with the Agent Carter showrunners writing her title, so ANOTHER new Captain Marvel #1 is on its way in a couple months. I'm guessing it will give us an even better idea of their plans for the film version of the character since Kelly Sue said the reason she decided to leave was because she didn't want to commit to 3-years of lead-up (and probably studio influence, lbr) to the movie.

I thought Brian Reed's run was solid. It pales compared to KSD's run, but I read him first so I didn't know about that one. It was bogged down by crossovers. However, there is a flashback comic that's a prelude to Secret Wars that might be one of the greatest things ever.

I'd probably read the original Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell) stories (Marvel Super Heroes 12-13, Captain Marvel 1-18) just to get context, unless you can't stomach 60s style Marvel. Chris Claremont's Ms. Marvel is unfortunately not available, but you should read the Brood Saga from Uncanny X-Men as well to see Carol go from Ms. Marvel to Binary. I'll also add that Brian Reed borrowed a surprising amount from Claremont's handling of Ms. Marvel (to the point where I missed a lot of references that I'm sure I'd appreciate more now).

I wonder how much of Carol's "spy/espionage" background from the comics they are going to have as part of MCU Carol's back story. Carol's past history is kind of convoluted in the comics so I can see Marvel streamlining it as much as possible in the MCU.

I've asked before if Michael Rossi would be a character for this movie.

I preferred Brian Reeds Ms Marvel run over KSD. KSD's Captain Marvel run bore me.

I haven't read much of Reed's run but I find KSD's take to be much more fun and entertaining than what I've read of Reed.

I've read a lot of Reed's run, and while I find it to be perfectly entertaining, I just straight-up don't like his characterization of Carol.

I thought it was fairly close to what came before and since. It's the brash, somewhat impulsive but still extremely heroic person that I think is Carol. But there's a lot I haven't read. Is there anything in particular? I do think KSD's version is a bit more quirky and maybe a bit motherly (I'm trying to think of a better word) with her interactions with Tic and Kit.

They are the two most similar incarnations, I won't disagree there, but the KSD version just seems like a more three-dimensional human character to me, which makes the Reed version seem like a caricature in comparison. Like the stereotypical "badass tough chick." But his version was at least better than Busiek's and the stuff that came before. Much, much better.

Nicole Perlman talked to Wired about the movie.

We’ve been talking a lot about archetypes and what we want this movie to be about and just how to write a strong female superhero without making it Superman with boobs," Nicole Perlman said of the Captain Marvel movie. "Meg and I are doing a lot of brainstorming and we’ll catch ourselves and say, ‘Wait a minute, what are we saying [here] about women in power?’ Then we have to say, ‘Why are we getting so hung up on that? We should just tell the best story and build the best character.’ And then we have this constant back-and-forth about how to tell a story that is compelling, entertaining, moving, kick-ass, and fun, and also be aware of what those larger implications might be. It’s a lot more complicated than just writing Guardians of the Galaxy.

Carol may have Superman like powers in her upcoming movie, but she's her own character, and very different from Kal-El.

If Fox could pull off the classic Psylocke swimsuit costume and have it look so good and not overly sexualised at all, then perhaps Marvel could do the classic Warbird costume for Carol Danvers?

This costume is a thing of beauty. The women's costumes in the MCU have been rather boring and generic so far. And people have argued that the more comic accurate costumes for women wouldn't work, like for Scarlet Witch, Elektra or Carol Danvers, all of whom have swimsuit-like costumes.

But Psylocke's looks perfectly respectable and really cool. I hope Marvel are paying attention. Psylocke's costume is very similar to the Warbird one, right down to the thigh-high boots, sash and swimsuit. If they made it that the Kree wear something like this, then it could look faithful and yet kick ass.

Wait, they added a cleavage window to it too? Dammit, Bryan Singer, you're gay, I thought we could avoid this. :o And yeah, no thank you to the Warbird costume. Just a poor design that doesn't fit the character as well as the newer one. I don't see what's somehow more interesting about a one piece swimsuit with a lightning bolt on it and some thigh highs.

Swimsuit costumes are silly, I'm sorry but they are. Keep them in comic books and cartoons but not in live action.

I have to disagree. I really like the Psylocke costume. :)
