For over a year, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige searched for the right director to helm Captain Marvel, the studio’s first stand-alone superheroine film. Rumors flew about whom Feige had met with for the gig and director short lists were bandied about for months in the trades, but in the end, Feige went with a pick no one saw coming, signing Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck to helm the studio’s next blockbuster.
That selection surprised industry onlookers, not simply because the directorial duo had been left off the leaked short lists, but because Boden and Fleck have a filmography that doesn’t immediately suggest big-screen superheroics. After breaking through with the Ryan Gosling drama Half Nelson, they’ve worked solely on small-scale films like Sugar, It’s Kind of a Funny Story, and Mississippi Grind, in addition to directing episodes of Looking and The Affair. What was it about them, I recently asked Feige, that piqued Marvel’s interest enough to set up a first meeting?

“We cast a pretty wide net,” said Feige. “It’s always based on people who’ve done things that we thought were interesting, at any level. We haven’t hired anybody who’ve never done a feature before, but what gets you in the room is doing interesting work in television and interesting work in features, both of which they’ve done. And then it’s about the conversation and the vision that we see.”
Once Boden and Fleck aced their first meeting, Feige kept calling them back until they landed the gig. “For us, what Anna and Ryan have done so spectacularly well in all of their movies, albeit on a much smaller scale than they’re about to do, is create a singular character journey,” he said. “The stories they’ve told have been so diverse, but regardless of the subject matter, they can dive into it and hone in on that character’s journey.”
That’s especially vital when it comes to Captain Marvel, who’ll be played by Brie Larson. Feige recently told Vulture that Captain Marvel will be, by far, the most powerful superhero in Marvel’s cinematic universe. But when you have an incredibly strong character who can fly, shoot energy bursts, and bat away Iron Man, Thor, and the Hulk like they were nothing, how do you find the right stakes to make her journey a compelling one?
“That’s a big part of the story line we’re putting together, and it’s certainly been a big part of the development conversation,” Feige admitted. It’s also where Boden and Fleck can really make their mark: Ultimately, the real stakes of the film have to do with who Captain Marvel is — a human pilot named Carol Danvers, granted superhuman abilities — rather than what she can do.
“Particularly for Captain Marvel, which is going to have a lot of spectacle, it ultimately needs to be about the three-dimensional, multilayered Carol Danvers character,” said Feige. “You have to be able to track her and follow her and relate to her at all points of the movie, regardless of how many visual effects and spaceships and bad guys are filling the frame. That’s what’s important.”

Unrelated but I thought this Captain Marvel statue was very cool.

I'm assuming that's tongue-n-cheek!:woot:

And yes, great looking statue! I just wish they were keeping the sash a sash...

According to McKelvie, the reason they kept the sash when they redesigned her costume was to pay homage to her Ms. Marvel outfit. Outfit that, as far as we know, will not exist in the MCU, which (again, according to him) makes the exclusion of the sash more understandable. I guess the idea that Carol could wear it because she likes it never crossed his mind. :hehe:

And yeah, those statues are pretty cool (I'd be willing to do some very questionable things to get my hands on that Chun-Li :o), even though their bases are godawfully ugly. I don't care if they're supposed to represent something from the game, they look terrible.

Guys, there is a Politics forum on the Hype. This is not it.

Since this will be the first Marvel film well origin film that we get where it is a female superhero in the lead role...the first one since Jennifer Garner's Elektra I think Captain Marvel's origin film we will get an awesome origin film here especially since they have a good writing team for this but also I wonder if they have even cast the villain for this? Or who it will be?

I wonder if Carol will have a love interest in her origin film? If she does it will be interesting to see who it will be

I am hoping they don't give her a love interest. Maybe have it similar to Dr.Strange where McAdam's character was more of a friend. They tried in the past but realized as adults it wasn't going to work. Give Carol a guy friend.

Why not? Personally, I've never particularly cared for Wonder Man but this is Nathan Fillion we're talking about. Yes, I know his character is not canon right now because his scene(s?) were deleted from GotG 2 but that doesn't mean they can't bring him back, unless he only accepted to play the character because of Gunn.

Wonder Man and Captain Marvel as love interests that would be good...great actually

He is 20 years older than Brie. The only love interest that old I could maybe begin to accept is Rhodey, but really, just let her have an age appropriate love interest, please.

Of the eligible bachelors in the present day MCU, Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson seems like the best match. Ex military, not intimidated by more powerful heroes, and he is probably the most mentally well adjusted guy considering he works in a bird suit.

I would be ok to Sam and Carol as well.

Still carrying the torch that Jess Drew will show up over here.

I could actually imagine Mackie and Brie having pretty great chemistry. He's worked with these directors before in Half Nelson, too. I like it.

Nathan Fillion isn't actually Wonder Man anyway, so it's a moot point.

I agree with this, although I think romance has really been more trouble than it's worth for the MCU so far.

I for one really hope they do something with the original Captain Marvel before Carol's film. Thanos was introduced as his nemesis for goodness sake, and he has a really great story about his death. So I guess I'm hoping he could be introduced in IW and die in Captain Marvel? Anything would be better than nothing!

Why does she have to have a lost interest? And why it can't it be Mar-vell like it's always been?

Because there'd be something wrong about not giving the first female lead her own love interest.

I had no idea Fillion was that old. If that's the case then I agree with you.

And as for Mackie... the guy's 38. Doesn't that make him too a bit too old to play Brie's LI?

Okay but again, all his scenes in GotG 2 have been cut so it doesn't really matter. If they want to bring him back as the real Wonder Man they easily can.

Now it's my turn to be surprised because I had no idea Mackie was that old either, lol. Still, one decade's age difference isn't nearly as bad as two. He's not old enough to be her father, so...upgrade. :oldrazz:

Dang, I'll have to see the cut scenes on the disc when I get it. He looks hilarious already.

Oh my god.

Yes, because apparently Brie isn't allowed to be wrong about anything here. I simply pointed out how she comes to the wrong conclusions. Another poster found it "troubling" that I think she's wrong. This then led to to some philosophical senate about "truth."

Baloney. A superhero movie thread is the perfect venue to discuss how racism and feminism are lies of the liberal media.:o

Nice try, except I didn't say that. Try to pay attention next time, m'kay? Most of what Brie talks about IS politics, so I'm suprised politics isn't discussed here more often.
