Captain Marvel Captain Marvel General Discussion and Speculation - Part 3

No one's mentioned her yet, and maybe it's because she hasn't appeared since 2008, but what about Betty Ross? I mean, she and Bruce couldn't be a 100 percent couple or at least engage all that much because of Bruce almost Hulking out if they almost got too intimate.

Can we just talk about the actual movie itself please can we do that is that so much to ask? Can we focus on the task at hand here that being the movie of Captain Marvel can we do that?

But with Captain Marvel if her film comes out before Infinity War Part 2 then I wonder if in some form or another if Thanos will show up in her origin film

I don't expect Thanos to appear in real time during her movie. We may get flashbacks or Kree people mentioning their battles with him. Danvers will appear in IW1, probably be in a coma(where she receives powers) by the end of the movie.

Good idea.

FYI, I'm deleting any more posts that try to continue the love interest or politics discussions. Those stopped being about Captain Marvel long ago. You're welcome to pick them back up on the appropriate boards.

And on the current topic at hand...I doubt Thanos will show up in her film. An Infinity Stone MIGHT come into play (as that could be what brings the Kree to Earth in the first place), but I don't expect the man himself will be involved.

And if the Kree do show up on Earth it plays into Infinity War so I will give you that

GOTG 2 mentioned the Kree not being merciful. I am hoping we see them show that in this movie or in one of the Avengers.

Everyone is expecting some kind of faithfulness to the origin with this film, despite a lack of Mar-Vell. What if it's not though? What if they just simplify it by making it something like an alien abduction deal? Would people/fans riot about that?

I'm not heavy into the comics, but I would like them to stick as close as possible to the source material. But... it all depends on how it is carried off. I could like just as well regardless.

I figured they'd work around Mar-Vell in just looking to expedite things. I would like to see Kree involvement though and an expanded role there.

So Danvers is heading to the Quantum Realm.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded its reach in recent years. Most notably, Doctor Strange explored the different dimensions and planes of existence that are out there. Ant-Man kicked it all off, though, as it introduced the Quantum Realm. Known as the Microverse in the comics, the Quantum Realm is the sub-atomic dimension that Scott Lang visits when he shrinks down to a dangerous level. It’s also where Janet Van Dyme, the original Wasp, is trapped. Given that, the dimension is thought to return in Ant-Man and the Wasp.

While we’re still waiting for confirmation on that, it’s now been revealed that the Quantum Realm will reappear in another upcoming MCU movie. Namely, Captain Marvel. The news comes from quantum physicist Dr. Spiros Michalakis, who’s worked with Marvel Studios in an advisory capacity. In an interview with Inverse, Michalakis hinted that the exploration of the Quantum Realm will be key to “a better understanding of Carol Danvers and her place in the MCU.”

“This is exciting for the future. There are different ways that some of these ideas appear on-screen in a few years. Not just for Ant-Man, but also for Captain Marvel and all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

By the way, not that everything needs to be 1:1 from the comics, but was there ever an explanation why in the MCU, it's called Quantum Realm instead of the Microverse?

It's a rights issue with the Micronauts property that belongs to Paramount.

Really thinking that Ant-Man 2 takes place in the Subatomic realm if he pushes himself in IWs too hard. That or he will miss IWs because after Cap broke them out he went on a mission with Wasp.

Uh, interesting. Off the top of my head, I can't recall any Carol Danvers comic that featured the Microverse. I guess this means that the story told in CM will somehow be connected to the events of AM&W.

No. None of these movies follow the comics faithfully. Sure some fans will mitch and boan like they do about everything but it will amount to nothing as it always does.

The MCU is its own universe and has been for some time now. It was never meant to be ripped from the pages adaptations. The fact that they don't have the rights to every character means the stories can't be the same.

Nothing in the MCU is really a direct adaptation. The filmmakers cherry pick things from the comics. Marvel has done a good enough job of capturing the essence of the characters and stories from the comics to please the fans.

Carol doesn't exactly have the most memorable origin and backstory in comics so I think most comic fans would be willing to give Marvel a lot of leeway in changing up her origins. As long as the character is still recognizable to her comic counterpart I think the fans will be happy.

She doesn't have a memorable backstory, I agree (or, I'd argue, it's just not one where she has any agency), but an alien abduction story seems problematic too. One,it doesn't give her any agency there either and, two, it'll duplicate Starlord for some reason. Given the idea they're worried about copying Green Lantern (which, to me, is the most straight-forward change to make her matter more while still being at least vaguely similar to the comics), I doubt they'd want to copy their own property as well.

So how do you think Marvel will handle her new origin story? Thinking about it, there is only two ways it might go down.

A: She's either going to get exposed to something (Kree reactor core? A power blast from an Infinity stone? etc. )

B: Or she finds an item that gives her super powers (A suit? Or some other cosmic power source? etc).

I do like my idea that when Thanos shows up on Earth, the US Airforce confronts him. During the short battle, a victorious Thanos opens a portal and zaps Carol's jet to another planet where she crashes. There, she gets the full Jemma Simmons treatment of being stuck on a seemingly lifeless alien planet. After wandering she finds a crashed Kree ship and a lone survivor, a Kree pilot by the name of Mar Vell. He is friendly and glad to see another face after several years of being stranded there. His ship was transporting an ancient power source that no Kree can control.

Her backstory can be REALLY easily re-imagined to give her actual agency while still keeping the same basic story beats, so I'm not buying that excuse for why they'd have to change it so dramatically. But if they want to change it to make it fit into the bigger story they're telling, then I don't really have a problem with that. All the MCU movies have had to make concessions like that, some bigger than others, and none of the origin stories were really hurt by it, imo.*

*A couple sequels were, though.

Uh, I hope this doesn't mean she gets her powers from the Quantum Realm & they're axing Carol's connections to the Kree... Like, I get Mar-Vell being absent (I assumed he would be based on the GL comparison comments) but the Kree connection is an essential part of Carol's stories & her powers are closely tied to them.

The Kree connection is vital to me! I don't mind if they muck around with the background but keep that please.

Yeah, while I really don't want to see them lose Mar-Vell, I understand the reasoning behind it if they do. But losing the Kree connection altogether? That's going a bit too far, imo.

Marvel has never changed a character's origin this drastically, though. They always keep the essence & basic details intact. Even Homecoming which is dancing around the origin story has multiple references to the origin. I mean, half of her rouges gallery is tied to the Kree. Dumb decision all around if this is true :down :down

Keep the Kree connection. That seems fundamental, and PLEASE keep her powers integral and not based on a power suit!! That would be too Iron Man.

Why would they get rid of Mar-Vell in the first place? Him being an undercover Kree on Earth would be a great starting point for the film. There are tons of places the story could go starting with that basic premise and his life intertwining with Carol's.
