Captain Marvel Captain Marvel General Discussion and Speculation - Part 9

No CinemaScore yet (according to BoT they've stopped releasing those Friday night so we won't get that 'til tomorrow), but WOM is off to a pretty good start on PostTrak -

‘Captain Marvel’ Darting To Super $156M-$160M Opening – Midday Update

That 73% "definite recommend" is comparable to Civil War's 75%, so that might not mean the best legs, though (both BP and IW had "definite recommend"s in the mid-'80's). But...it's better than Doctor Strange's 67%, so maybe it's not a great way to gauge legs at all, lol.
Looks like Thor: Ragnarok had an 85% definite recommend while SM: HC was only at 69%. For the obvious female-led hero comparison, Wonder Woman was only at 70%.

And for the trolls' comparison, Alita got 3.5 stars and a definite recommend of 50%.

Aquaman got 4 stars and 69% definite recommend.

A solid, entertaining and very predictable movie, with following being the strong points:
- relationship between Carol & Fury and Carol & Rambeau,
- and the Kree/Skrull story.

The negatives:
- Brie Larsen's performance just wasn't convincing enough, maybe it was the formulaic writing and secondly,
- the action was very underwhelming.

Still a good movie - 7/10.

Just saw the movie. I LOVE IT! I would watch a road trip movie with Carol, Fury, and Goose.

I thought Brie's performance was great and the opposite of bland. I had my doubts when they casted her because I did at that time though she was bland. I was thankfully wrong.

I'm ready for the sequel!

I really loved Alita, but for people not into Anime, I can see why it wasn't heavily recommended.

So after seeing it, I thought it was fine. It wasn't amazing, but it certainly wasn't bad. Kind of fits in really with the other Phase 1 origin story movies. Captain Marvel has cool powers and should be another solid character to add to the mix. I loved the role Fury had in this one. The movie had plenty of funny moments and had me and the audience laughing. A very solid, middle of the road MCU movie.

There were things I didn't like sure. The Fury eye thing...just really movie? Just come on. The action wasn't anything great. You can kind of tell the directors weren't used to making this kind of blockbuster.

Overall I thought it was solid. I think the character has potential and I'm looking forward to what the Russos can do with her in Endgame. And she wasn't as powerful as I thought she might be. Not to say she isn't powerful in the movie, but I thought they might have gone too far. It doesn't feel like Superman being way more powerful than anyone in the Justice League. Good movie.

CinemaScore is never a good barometer, it's highly flawed and inaccurate. LEGO Movie 2 had an A- cinemascore. CinemaScore is basically like political polling and that's why it doesn't work. The last election pretty much exposed that political polls are garbage, trash and not to be trusted.

At least Rotten Tomatoes is based on actual critical reviews and you know exactly how many and which ones are negative or positive.

I really think this movie is a grower I was sort of on the it was good but flawed side but something really clicked with me the second time around i even teared up in some parts. I think this movie has more to say than what's on the surface.

I think over time people will look more favorably towards this. I think it's a better movie than Doctor Strange and I'm a DS hardcore apologist.

This was one of the more unpredictable Marvel movies yet IMO

It was the second weakest Marvel solo origin/first entry. Solid but the rest beside Incredible Hulk were noticeably better.

It's the one the industry's been using for years, and that and ComScore are the only ones that can't be invaded by trolls, so it's what we've got.

I mean if you look at those blockbusters Fallen posted up there, that seems to be a fairly accurate representation of the public consensus on those movies. Lots of people went to see Venom (some of us even multiple times), but very few are under the impression it's actually a good movie, lol. It's just trashy fun.

Not everything the industry does or uses is sacrosanct. And just because they've used it for years doesn't mean its reliable or good. Case in point, the Nielsen rating which has destroyed many quality and even popular shows that had loyal audiences and followings.

Also, Flickchick85, to be perfectly honest, how do we know it has no trolls? We have no idea who is getting polled. The people being polled by CinemaScore could be giving troll reactions. There's no way to know for certain.

Because it takes effort to troll a poll like that. It's not as easy as sitting at home behind a computer screen. I've been polled by CinemaScore. They choose the pollees, not the other way around. Therefore, trolls can't just "decide" to go on the offensive and flood it with fake votes. And again, when you compare movies of the same type, they seem to capture the public consensus on them pretty well in retrospect.

And a loyal following is not necessarily a large one. Nielsen work(ed, back when they had the numbers) in determining what lots of people "like," not what anybody "loves."

These polls DO provide valuable demographic info, you just have to know what they're telling you when you read them.
