Captain Marvel Captain Marvel General Discussion and Speculation - Part 9

Well it turns out I was very wrong. Since the teaser was released I've thought this looked bland and Brie's performance was wooden. With the RT being in the low 80s and Stuckman saying what I expected and giving it a C I went into this expecting a bland film and a wooden performance from Brie. But I loved this film. I've got some minor problem with it such as the editing and shooting of the action scenes, and Coulson was wasted, but that's about the only issues I had with the film. This is definitely my favorite origin story in the MCU. It was so much fun.

And the skrulls,
I adored what they did with them and actually nearly teared up when the skrull children and refugees revealed themselves. Prior to that I really wanted to believe Talos was telling the truth. I liked the guy, and liked what Mendelsohn was doing, but I was afraid Talos was lying, and that itd turn out he was using Carol to get to the power source just so he could continue the war and win it. So it was a huge relief when it was revealed that he really was a loving father and was just trying to save his people and really wanted to ally with Carol. I'd love to see Talos and his family and his people again.

In terms of my own enjoyment this film gets a 9/10 from me.

Love your review especially the Skrulls part!

Duck tacos? I'm a big fan of duck (more so Chinese roasted duck) so it might be an interesting thing to try.

I think it sounds delish! Maybe with some hoisin sauce instead of salsa...

Yeah, I mean, they’re both good: I just always find T’Challa a bit too soft spoken and quiet. I’m more fond of Okoye and Shuri. But, gotta have that one hero who’s very calm and thoughtful: I like that about T’Challa, but not all the time.
I came out of Civil War loving T'Challa but I was really disappointed with him as a character in his solo film. I think that's a huge reason why I'm not as high on Black Panther as others

Well anyone who remembered what I said yesterday can forget it. Apparently a friend couldn't end up using the ticket they bought for the showing tonight. So...yeah instead of waiting a couple weeks I'll just go tonight and see how Captain Marvel turned out.

Funny how things turn out sometimes. Can't wait to see how it turned out.

I'm a huge Boseman fan just in general. I thought BP was pretty good, but wasn't as enthusiastic about it as many others. Still, I enjoyed it and think Marvel has built a stable of really, really fine actors. Boseman, Larson, Cumberbatch??? That's strong.

BTW...absolutely LOVED SLJ in this movie and it was great to see Clark Gregg. I hated it when he got killed.

Ha, I did the opposite - 2d IMAX (liemax) last night, Dolby Atmos today. Enjoyed the film even more this go-round, caught a few little things I didn't the first time. Can't wait for my next viewing on Sunday, lol.
Glad you're enjoying it so much. I'm planning on going Saturday night as I couldn't make my normal Friday MCU matinee (had a pet that needed some slight medical attention today but should be good to by tomorrow.)

Hope your pet gets better soon!

Just got out of my second viewing I legit love this movie now screw the critics and haters

But most importantly ... both audiences I've seen it with Clapped and cheered at the end! Hope this does as well as it looks like it's doing.

…… and Coulson was wasted,....
Oh ... that’s not cool, I’m probably one of the 10 people who likes the characters and am looking for to see him on big screen again. Guess I have to tamper my expectation going into the cinema Sunday.:(

Awful movie. Probably one of the worst they have done.

Thank god the russos are bringing out endgame soon. I gotta say that the future of the mcu is not looking good in my opinion after endgame. I hate mcu spidey and captain marvel (character not bad but movie is awful). Black panther is good though (best in civil war). Doctor strange is also good (mostly because of infinity war). Half are good and the other half suck.

I hate being that downer here cause i love captain marvel in the avengers earth mightiest heroes tv show and thought this would have been good. The first 20 mins were great than it became bad.

Best part of the movie was the post credits. I honestly dont think I will include this in my marathan watches. Really pointless honestly.

Bring on endgame please!!

Any particular things that bugged you?

Exactly. The "New Avengers" have a really strong cast and not to mention Paul Rudd!

I think Boseman is great. I just enjoyed his character more in Civil War than his solo film and Infinity War

No spoilers:
Intro until earth was great and was wondering why the mixed reviews. Then it became extremely boring. No idea why they decided to do a 90s movie (very pointless). Hated the skrulls and the twist. Hated the fury eye thing. Comedy was awful and never landed especially with skrulls. Zero action until last 10 mins. Music was forgettable. How did she fix the phone (no spoilers)? How did she get her suit in end? Goose was dumb. Never funny. Brie larson had glimpses of greatness than just pure blandness. Pretty awful action that never got me excited. Never should have went to earth honestly. If it was strictly in space then it would have been wayyyyy better. Awful music choices for 90s songs at some parts (two parts in the end for sure).

The end credits scene is by far the best part of the movie and only part that got me remotely excited.

No CinemaScore yet (according to BoT they've stopped releasing those Friday night so we won't get that 'til tomorrow), but WOM is off to a pretty good start on PostTrak -

ComScore/Screen Engine PostTrak scores out of the gate for the 21st Marvel title in the MCU are off to a great start with 4 1/2 stars and a 73% definite recommend. Men overall led over females last night 60% to 40%. It will be interesting to see if that changes over the weekend. Captain Marvel pulled in a 77% general audience, 9% parents and 4% kids. Kids under 12 gave the female superhero five stars with girls giving the pic 100% and boys 91%. In order of demo draw last night men 25+ led at 37% followed by men under 25 (23%), women over 25 (21%) and women under 25 (18%). Women love the pic better than guys, 91% to 82% with females over 25 bestowing the best grades from adults on Carol Danvers at 96% positive.
‘Captain Marvel’ Darting To Super $156M-$160M Opening – Midday Update

That 73% "definite recommend" is comparable to Civil War's 75%, so that might not mean the best legs, though (both BP and IW had "definite recommend"s in the mid-'80's). But...it's better than Doctor Strange's 67%, so maybe it's not a great way to gauge legs at all, lol.

I liked it, but didn’t necessarily love it. Still, it gave me moments I was hoping for, including the cinematic debut of one of my favorite characters:

Also, the Stan Lee tribute was perfect and the mid credits scene was fire!!! I’m seeing it a second time this afternoon.

After my second viewing, I enjoyed it even more, but I’m still not “in love” yet. I may be willing to “go on another date” in a week or two, though!

Did anybody else's theatre applaud at the MCU logo? If you saw it you know why.

My theater sighed and applauded after the Marvel intro. Very fun movie. I think Larson did a great job and SLJ is always great anyway. I think Goose stole the movie though! I need that cat.

I thought they got lazy with doing the 90’s timepiece. It’s like they just checked a few boxes that screamed 90s and that was really it.

Blockbuster, check. Radio Shack, check. Payphones, check. Let’s sprinkle some 90s songs too so people really know.

Now, let’s have 90% of the movie take place in a desert, desert bunker, a farm, and space.
