Wow, I'm going for 5th time Saturday before I see Shazam, as a double feature. I. LOVE. THIS. MOVIE.
It may eventually be the best movie of the MCU to me, but right now it's #5. It's hard for me to put it above the best of the best, such as Black Panther, Iron Man, Avengers, and Cap 1... but it just may. My heart has been totally won over.
Why do I love this movie so much? Because it's HUMAN. That's the theme of the movie and it's something the MCU has severely lacked in since Phase one. Aside from the special exception of Black Panther of course. Captain Marvel has HEART, soul and by FAR the best hero moments in the MCU. They actually mean something (unlike say, the airport battle in Civil War), and FINALLY we have hero moments that are beautifully shot, after several movies of visually uninteresting noisy action. I keep going back for more.
It's absolutely imperfect and that's another reason why I love it. I've been so used to machine made "perfect" marvel movies forever. They're are largely boring, almost like TV show filler episodes. Good movies to most, but to me? Entertaining, but nothing that really captures my heart and stands out (mainly talking from Iron Man 3 to Black Panther). This? It has quirk, personality and individualism (much like Panther & phase 1 had), old school camera work and stunts that you can just feel, humor that isn't overbearing and doesn't rob the hero of any crucial moment. The dialogue is often sharp and not wasteful. The nostalgia is definitely on the nose, but it works and isn't too hammy. It's used to the films advantage instead of a cheap ploy (ala Bumblebee). It's a harshly lit film at times, you can feel the sunlight of the 90's and it instantly took me back, and back to those types of movies. Wayne's World, T2, etc. The movie is working on several levels to accomplish that nostalgic feel, more than just shoehorned music for the sake of it. I notice that and appreciate it.
The weakest aspect of this movie is that it has to be connected to the MCU. It's really a damn shame, because I didn't give a crap about Captain Marvel before this movie, and now I just want a string of her own movies and her own stories. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited for Endgame and her involvement, I just hope this shining star isn't diluted over time, and she gets a proper sequel that's truly stand alone!
Can't wait to see it again on Saturday in IMAX for the final time. Because we all know Disney will royally screw over the home release and not include the proper aspect ratio. Argh.
