Captain Marvel Captain Marvel General Discussion and Speculation - Part 9

I know what you mean, but I've learned to be more confident about the choices in the MCU than most other places, tbh.

Marvel studios tends to exceed my expectations, rather than the opposite, which is pretty unusual.

Dr. Strange level would be great!

And yes, nice to hear again that she'll being taking center in the new Avengers going forward. Really excite about this!

I'm cool with Captain Marvel becoming the leader of the Avengers, and I know Feige's heart is in the right place, but man, so much of what he says about the character just comes across as cringy aggrandizement. Like, we get it, she's great and awesome and amazing and super powerful and yet still really really human and down to earth and relatable and great. Better to show us that, rather than lay it on thick in press releases while she only has a single decently-good movie to her name.

Well, I saw all of that in her movie...

Sad to see the 'old guard' move on, but anxious to see the new Avengers go forth from here.

I think leader or not everyone will get their chance to shine. I mean BP was a phenomenon as well.

Future looks bright

yikes lol now i liked captain marvel a solid super hero flick but even i will admit she is by far the weakest lead actor of the mcu

hope russo make her way better

List of actors that have appeared in the MCU who have won Academy Awards for lead or supporting actor/actress:

Anthony Hopkins

William Hurt

Tommy Lee Jones

Tilda Swinton

Sam Rockwell

Natalie Portman

Michael Douglas

Marisa Tomei

Mahershala Ali

Lupita Nyong'o

Jeff Bridges

Gwyneth Paltrow

Forest Whitaker

Cate Blanchett

Ben Kingsley

Benicio Del Toro

AAAAAANNND...

Brie Larson.

Literally the only Oscar winner to lead an MCU franchise.

I know... I know... "Oscars don't mean anything!!" (Until of course they do) Still... The actor's awards of the Academy is voted on by guess who? THE OTHER ACTORS. So while you or others may think she is a "weak" performer her peers think otherwise.

BVS is written by an oscar winning writer

If anything, that shows that oscar winners tend not to have the qualities preferred for a lead character in a superhero movie. I mean, there's very little overlap between the kinds of characters that win oscars and the kinds of characters that have mass mainstream appeal.

People said Chris Evans wasn't a good actor either. Maybe some of these people should watch movies outside of the MCU

And THAT aspect ties into the metaphor of
a woman breaking free of the patriarchal system (and yes, dare I say, even religion) that's designed from every angle to keep her down and from reaching her full potential.

The themes run strong and clear in this one. They just aren't as explicitly spelled out through the dialogue as they are in, say, Black Panther. But it's hardly the paper thin "girl power, yay!" That some seem to take it for.
Probably why this movie resonates more with women. There is no overt sexism in this, just covert sexism that every woman could relate too.
