Christopher Nolan's Inception (Thread II)

Memento & The Prestige are both great but my favourites from Nolan are Inception & TDK. I will be watching those two a hell of a lot more times over the next few years!

I'm still waiting for Nolan's 'ambitious mess'. You know, that one film in every great director's filmography that sticks out like a sore thumb, and ironically, one in which the director is more personally involved than ever and really puts his heart and soul into. James Cameron's ambitious mess was The Abyss. Spielberg has had quite a few (Amistad, A.I). Paul Thomas Anderson's was Magnolia. Tim Burton's was Batman Returns. I thought Inception was going to be it for Nolan, but I guess he dodged that bullet too. I really hope it isn't The Dark Knight Rises. That would be just too painful. :csad:
That's not exactly a horrible list of films you just named! :woot:

Thanks. Inception and Memento are basically tied for me, but Inception gets the nod precisely BECAUSE of its ambition. It's amazing that he was able to pull off this grand scale story that he's been thinking about for years. It could have easily turned into a trainwreck but it didn't. Prestige is awesome in its own right, but a slight notch below those other two. TDK has some glaring flaws that bother the heck out of me (the voice, the boats scene, the sonar crap, the one liners, and on and on). It's still a great superhero movie but it's not in the class of Inception, Memento, or Prestige.

Its more than a bit hypocritical (and amusing) you talk about TDK's flaws while completely ignoring Inception's.

No it isn't. I simply disagree with the whining about Inception's alleged flaws. It's called an opinion. Deal with it.

I've only watched Inception twice, so I haven't really dissected it like I have with other films. What flaws does Inception have?

Gladly. But after you deal with the opinion that TDK is better than Inception. Everytime someone shares that notion, you have to quote them and say (whine about) how "flawed" it is. :yay:

Actually, I believe I was the one who was called crazy for saying I felt Inception was better earlier in the thread. I then explained WHY I felt Inception was better. Nothing more, nothing less.

I'd like to jump in and say that I think that Inception and The Prestige are better films than TDK. Eventhough I'm not crazy about Insomina and Batman Begins I wouldn't classify those as bad films. Those are his two lesser films IMHO. I have yet to see Following though and I have to watch Memento again to see if I think that it's better than TDK.

BTW

The reception of Inception was not mixed, it had mostly good reviews from the critics and raving reviews from moviegoers if it's legs are anything to go by.

The Dark Knight is my second least favorite Nolan film. :o

I'd say Inception, The Prestige, and Memento are all better than The Dark Knight.

I like hearing people's differing opinions about Nolan's films.

There seems to be this idea that 100% of his fans think that TDK is his best film, I guess because it made billion dollars but that obviously isn't true.

I love and greatly enjoy all of Noaln's movies. I've never bothered to rank them, it's something I enjoy so I don't really feel the need to try searching for flaws that will make me like it less.

All of Nolan's films are great; but Memento remains my favorite followed by Inception at a close second.

Hell, Memento was on my top 10 of the last decade. Yes it was that good.

Like Arya said to me all of Nolan's films are top ranking to me anyways, so picking between them is always a chore.

However still I think TDK was his best, I think it had some of the best themes, well written dialogue, and the themes still stick with me to this day. And with out a doubt I think Nolan's best character is the Joker. His others are fabulous as well but I just think the combo of him and Heath created such a memorable character.

But next to TDK is probably Inception and The Prestige. Very close to those is Memento. Which honestly those three are very interchangeable to me. Begins is still one of my fav films because it did a wonderful characterization of a life long hero of mine, but I will say that if I detach my hero from it, it is a little lower on my list. Down with Insomnia. Even though Insomnia I have gained much respect for over the years. But honestly to me rating Nolan films is like splitting hairs, I never can really decide because I love all his work.

I still love TDK the best though, it was just a combo I think of all the elements of his other works that made them so great combined into one.

Though for the most part I will say I agree with HighFivingMF I don't try to rip one down to make another look good I think all of his work is brilliant.

+1 Well said and I agree.

Anyway I don't know if you guys know that Inception: On Demand has exclusive featurettes that weren't on the Blu-ray.

The Prestige, Memento, TDK, Inception, Batman Begins, Insomnia. I just love The Prestige so much and Memento is just superb. I ranked Inception as i did because while I LOVE it I just dont love it as much. Insomnia I could care less about. It was an ok movie

Inception and Memento, complexed films especially Memento. Hands down the best Nolan has done, IMO although I have a soft spot for Batman Begins. Never cared much for Nolan's other films.

The Dark Knight is my favorite film of Nolan's, but I think that Inception and The Prestige are his best films, with Prestige having my favorite Bale performance to date.

After seeing some statistics, Inception has great chance for these Oscar nominations

Locks

Best Picture
Best Director
Best Original Screenplay
Best Cinematography
Best Film Editing
Best Visual Effects

Highly probable

Score
Sound Editing
Sound Mixing
Best Art Direction

The film might end up with 10 nominations

memento still my no. 1 and that wont change soon. inception is pretty good but the movie has its weaknesses...

Never heard of it man. Enlighten me

Brilliant little movie shot for just $6,000. It's in black and white instead of color, which adds a creepy atmosphere to the film. The story is told in an intentionally disjointed timeline, which was a foreshadowing of things to come with Nolan (Memento, The Prestige, and Inception being the prime examples).
