Classic Rock appreciation thread

Vocally, Freddie Mercury was the best lead singer ever. He was also an amazing showman. Watch the dvds of their 1986 performance at Wembley Stadium and their 1982 performance at Milton Keynes Bowl, the man holds the crowd in the palm of his hand. Shame that he died so soon and under sucht ragic cirmcumstances. :(

Wembley Stadium - Amazing performance
Never seen the Milton Keynes one. There was a reunion tour last year, with Paul Rodger's singing instead. He did a good job, but doesn't compare to Freddie

The thing is, most music companies don't want to build up bands. They want them to have a hit or two, and then fade into oblivion.

I'm honestly not sure. I can't really explain it, but music was just different back in the day. I don't think anyone will achieve the fame of the Beatles. Ever.

You're absolutley correct. There will never be another band like The Beatles. I remember when The Arctic Monkeys debuted a few months ago, everyone was sayting they were the next Beatles. I think that was when I officially lost faith in moder day pop culture.

I don't bother with new bands anymore. I just listen to old stuff.

The Milton Keynes one is awesome. The version of "Somebody To Love" blows the original to smithereens.

I didn't like Rodgers a great deal, he's great for with Bad Company and Free but he really doesn't fit with Queen. His vocal styling is a sharp contrast to Freddie. The only person I can see filling in for Freddie and doing a respectable job of it is Geoge Michael.

Didn't George Micheal do a song with them?

Music now just doesn't seem to have much originality anymore, unlike with older bands, like The Beatles.

Yeah, all the bands are so similar. You have about three genres and all bands in that genere are exactly the same.

It's basically:

Punk
Band's that think they are Punk e.g McFly.....*shudders*
and Emo

Agreed. I'm especially disappointed at how punk rock music is nowadays. Punk was meant to be a largely underground and anti-mainstream thing. Now, it's not uncommon at all to see a punk rock tune in The Top 10. If Joe Strummer and Joey Ramone were alive today, I'm sure they'd be disappointed.

You know, I think it has alot to do with kids now a days. So many kids my age only burn cds filled with singles from bands. That's it they care about..they don't even care about bands, or albums anymore. They just want their next quick fix.

CURSE YOU INTERNETS YOU HAVE RUINED AND CORUPTED ARE YOUTH!11

There's also no one to look up do anymore. In the 60's and 70's, Guitarists could look up to Jimi Hendrix, Pete Townshend and Eric Clapton, singers could look up to Robert Plant, Jim Morrison, and Roger Daltry, Drummers could look up to John Bonham and Keith Moon, bassists to John Paul Jones, Paul McCartney, and John Entwistle. All of the artists today are more or less riding on the coat tails of the idols of yesteryear. No one will be remembered the way the old idols were.

And other variations of emo. Like Screamo. Now, there are some good indie rockers. Most of the ones who aren't signed and will never be signed.

 if you mean music on the radio then yes.

I was talking about mainstream. There is a lot of good underground stuff, but the general public will never hear of them.

but that's the way it's always been. you don't think everyone in the 60's and 70's listened to the doors right? there was a ton of artists deemed more "radio friendly" they got the airplay. granted, there wasn't soooo many of them, but still.

Wow, can we get a mod in here to delete all of the irrevelant discussion so that those with actual discussion get get some things discussed?

(this is in regards to the posts on pages 14-15 ish)

Yeah, but there are tons of underground artists who suck too, because they are nothing more than a band practically nobody has heard trying to sound exactly like flat mainstream stuff in an attempt to make a name for themselves.

Good music comes from iceland, I think, man...

You must be new here, eh?

You can't have a long thread on this site with out getting off topic for at least 3 pages.

What about them? I'm not very familiar with them.

I agree.

Would any of y'all consider Billy Joel classic rock?

Good. I actually consider him one of the greatest classic rock solo artists of that era.
