Classic Rock appreciation thread

I compare rap to rock when its a complete and utter rip off of a rock song. "Ice Ice Baby" is just a crappy different lyriced version of "Under Pressure" by Queen and Bowie. "Come With Me" By P. Diddy is a disgrace to the brilliance that is "Kashmir" by Led Zeppelin.

Yeah, but those are some of the worst "musicians" in the bizz. Puff has never been the attention of the critics, he just makes bad covers and has no originality. He's seen as being very detrimental to the whole industry. Before Bad Boy records, the whole "bling bling" thing wasn't around either.

If you talk about bad rap it's the same thing as talking about bad rock and they are indeed the same thing in that circumstance, pop. But, as we are talking about true rock (or true rap if the discussion calls for it), and we are not talking about pop (all the rock bands that have been and will be forgotten), it's irrelevent.

how do you people feel about Iggy Pop?

f**k yes, my friend! 1969 and lust for life are two of the greatest songs ever. the stooges are back living in ann arbor rehearsing to record a new album. i almost got to meet iggy and ron asheton at the raconteurs show.

How do I feel about Iggy Pop? Here's how I feel...punk rock was not invented in New York or London. It was invented in Detroit.
while i'd love to agree with this...it is debatable. many people will argue (with validity) that punk was started with the velvet underground in NY....who in turn inspired the stooges (who went as far to have john cale produce their album)....who in turn inspired the NY Dolls, who inspired the ramones, who inspired the sex pistols, etc....

Hey, has anyone gotten Bob Dylan's new album yet? And if so, how do you like it?

Not sure, but I have gotten "Highway Companion" by Tom Petty, which is the best new album in a long time.

That, Dylan's new album and Cash's last album are all on top of my list for new albums I want.

i havent heard it yet, but i hear its a great album.

I think I'm gonna bump this one. I'm bored and this thread was fun.

So, what's everyone think of the Led Zeppelin reunion?

i dunno. at the moment, i kinda dont care. i'll have to wait and hear how it sounds and see where it goes.

Part of me thinks that they might do a tour if it goes well (not money wise, but sound wise). I don't know, I've just got a feeling about this one.

I missed out on seeing Petty down here so instead I bought the Anthology: Through the Years 2-disc set. It's a damn fine retrospective of one of America's best rock acts.

I'd bought that recently myself. A great compilation of Petty songs. :woot:

im excited for oct. 12...i have tickets to see both elvis costello and bob dylan together!! how incredible is that?! i love both costello and dylan, and this will be my first time seeing them both live.

Ah, yeah, Velvet Underground. Forgot about them. Not sure if I'd call them punk though. Not sure that I wouldn't either though.

I don't want to ruin your time but Dylan's voice sounded terrible at ACL. He's never been a good singer and that hasn't mattered in the past...but this time I think it did matter...in my opinion.

I'd love to go see that show but of course that's not possible. I doubt the band's going to tour as they didn't the other times they reconvened. But hey, never say never.

looking back on that post (which i made a while ago)...i'd probably disagree with myself, ha. the velvet underground was definitely an inspiration to the punk movement, but punk began with the stooges in detroit...and everything else followed.

i've heard good and bad about his recent tours. though, eveyone seems to miss him playing guitar, which i hear he hasnt been doing lately. either way, i dont think anything will ruin this night. i'll be giddy enough just to have been in the same zip code as dylan (and costello), yet alone the same building.

Heh. I have tickets to the show before you. October 9th.

I've seen live Dylan on Youtube before and I still think he's great, but I don't know much about Costello at all. At least not outside his greatest hits album.

They're more... idk... art punk. I think that's the best word to describe them, even though I hate lables. It's all Rock and Roll to me.

pick up costello's first 3 albums: my aim is true, this years model, and armed forces.

Van Halen tore the house down in Philadelphia last night.

Interesting sig Dwarf lord. I was just about ask if anyone else besides me felt that Chuck Berry should have the title of King of Rock N Roll, not Elvis.

To me, there is no King of Rock and Roll. The royal court though would be the big 7:

Elvis Presley
Chuck Berry
Little Richard
Buddy Holly
Carl Perkins
Jerry Lee Lewis (Who I saw in Concert this year!)
Johnny Cash

All of those 7 people were instrumental in creating Rock and Roll. Had it not been for any of them, we probably wouldn't be listening to Rock today.

Edit: It's kind of funny that by the end of the 50s and the early 60s all of them were out of the picture. Elvis was in the army, Chuck Berry was in jail, Little Richard quit music to become a preacher, Carl Perkins quit after he and his brother got into a car accident (his brother was killed). Jerry Lee was more or less in exile after everyone found out about him marrying his cousin, Buddy Holly was dead and Johnny Cash had gone to more of a country base and he was almost constantly high on drugs.
