Conan - Part 1

And the fact they didn't make him a slave for about 15 years of his young life was a great improvement.

Just got back from seeing it....

One of the worst remakes i've ever seen. It's right up there with the Clash of The Titans re-make.

It started off great with young Conan, but once his dad died the movie switched over to 'The Prince of Persia'. Where was the grit? Conan had no real threat from any of his foes. My god, this movie had the worst pacing i have ever witnessed. It jumped from one action sequence to the other. Jason looks like Conan, but everything else around him felt like an R-rate Disney adventure; i was waiting for Orlando Bloom to pop out from being a rock!

I really wanted to like this, but seriously replace Gemma Arteton and Jake Gyllenhal from 'Prince of Perisa' with Marisa Nichols and Jason Mamoa, throw in some blood and some boobs and that's what you have here... big let down. :csad:

5/10

I don't know what kind of complexity or grit you were looking for. A lot of Conan's adventures were about the clash of Opulance with Savagery, so the lush city scapes (and silken maidens) were spot on with the source material.

Most of Howard's stories were'nt that complex..they were pulp adventures, and even the longer tales were fairly simple hack and slash.
But again, the presence of Finery and Opulance was a constant just as much as blood , guts , and dirt.

Since it's not really based on the source material and basically recycling the story of the first movie I think it's legitimate to call this a remake.

How exactly is it recycling the story of the first movie beyond featuring a guy named Conan involved in a revenge plot? No one calls Batman Begins a remake of Batman '89 despite both films featuring a charater in a rubber batsuit.

Or Rise of the Planet of the Apes a remake of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, despite both featuring a character named Caesar in a plot about ape revolution.

just got back, liked it a lot, Mamoa is a better Conan, the movie was all it needed to be, I think what was lacking was a great sound track, if Arnolds movie had this sound track It would not have been as good a movie. That being said, I am glad they didn't use the Milus sound track since this movie had nothing to do with the Arnold movie, it is a reboot of the character.

Terrible film. Full of holes and horrible cinematography. Wasn't for me.

The trailer didn't give it away?

I WANT YER HEAD...hahaha.

This, Fright Night and even Spy Kids couldn't dethrone The Help.

Oh shat...that's a big ouch. Seems all the movies that came out yesterday were absolute flops. Damn I bet a bunch of studio people are crying.

I loved it, completely different from the Arnold movie, but really captured the feel of the Dark Horse Comics. Mamoa did a fine job as Conan, he gave off a great sense of intensity. It did it's job and was entertaining a solid 7/10

For me it was so-so.

It had some good action, but the quality of the movie seemed off to me.
Also the editing was not the greatest, It would jump from one scene to another, Seems like they wanted to tell the story in the fastest way possible.

The Acting was ok, but the script was not.

It will be a good movie to watch when I am bored.

I love one of the main things I keep hearing is 'Terrible remake of the Milius film' and 'much closer to the REH stories than any other film so far'. Both things that make me want to watch this movie :P

I enjoyed reading the Marvel comics version of Conan the Barbarian years ago.
His path in life would always feature encounters with sinister people, insane witches, doomed and cursed women.Such encounters would always lead Conan
to exclaim:Ah Crom! or By Crom!
So going in i knew i may be a bit dissapointed with the 2011 version of Conan The Barbarian
Born in battle, seeking vengeance for the torturous murder of his father Corin( an underused Ron Perlman)and searching for the man who brought the aforementioned about Khalar Zym(Stephen Lang)
The film is ultra violent, loud and not for the faint of heart as blood and guts fly, some of the action is quite enjoyable and thrilling as Conan slices and dices his way to vengeance.Jason Momoa as Conan does the best he can
with the paint by numbers script.
I even liked Rose McGowan as the creepy and freaky Marique: Khalar Zym's daughter ,looking like a cross between Rihanna and one of those gothic kewpie dolls.
Rachel Nichols as Tamara is beautiful but the romance between her and Conan feels forced.
The film starts to lose steam as it enters its last thirty minutes, the action and story become routine and i started checking my watch.
Conan is a fun romp at times but its one you can definitely wait for on DVD.
Scale of 1-10 a 7

CTB will round up to $10 million. That's $7 million less than what "The Expendables" did on its first weekend. Still, it'll be interesting to see what happens during the weekdays.

You might be thinking of Rambo, since The Expendables opened to around $34 million.

However, that film enjoyed a lengthy marketing campaign built around the gimmick of a "dream cast of action stars". Despite all the goodwill, the majority of its success was ultimately due to international grosses.

I'm still hopeful that Conan will manage to find an audience overseas. It may not be enough to greenlight an immediate sequel, but at least it may prevent another long delay before the next Conan project.

$10 million? And some lame ass Hallmark movie comes out on top this weekend? The hell?

That is around the 3rd time you have said this...we get it...you don't understand how a movie about womens rights and racial insensitivity could possibly do better than a sword and sorcery movie....but I hate to break this to you....the sword and sorcery genre is small. I am a sword and sorcery fan...I loved the new Conan movie...BUT...I can understand it not doing as good at the boxoffice as THE HELP.

I can't Help...pardon the Pun but think the fact that The Help was something new, as opposed to another Hollywood retread, is another reason it beat Conan and Fright Night, though if that were entirely true ,Apes wouldn't be doing as well. Ultimately, Hollywood should really come up with some fresh ideas for a change instead of going back to 80's all the time.

That is what really ruined it for me.:csad: The Young Conan part of the movie was very well paced. It was the best part of the film for me.....every thing else felt rushed.

I have a feeling the movie's reputatation will improve significantly with the rumored extended cut, as the shooting script actually addressed most of the complaints people have with the story.

It's still pulp fantasy that moves at a rapid pace, but the story itself is given a little more time to breath. The characters, a little more interaction with each other. For example, in the ship sequence alone:

After Conan is poisoned during his fight with Khalar, time is devoted to his recovery onboard the ship.

During this time, Conan tells Tamara he has assured her safe passage to Hyrkania, and she realizes he no longer views her as mere bait. She also explains the backstory of Acheron to him, revealing an ability to see visions just like her master.

The subsequent ship battle is more coherent, with Conan rallying a final charge that helps to turn the tide of the fight. Once the celebration is over, there's a quiet scene where Conan discovers Tamara praying to Mitra. She asks for help in discovering her purpose, as well as the god's blessing for Conan.

All in all, there's nothing significantly deeper about the script's version of the story, but it does feel like a more cohesive work. Judging by the way films like Daredevil, The Punisher, and Rambo saw their reputations improve with a longer cut, I think Conan will eventually find an audience.

(Incidentally, the script also sheds light on one of the biggest plot holes in the film: Why did Khalar's army drag a giant warship over land, yet attack the pirate ship using small boats? A story note in the script reveals that a sea battle with the other ship was originally planned, but had to be cut due to budgetary issues.)

Because the revenge plot was specifically created for the 1982 movie. Batman, well, you know it...

It's no surprise it's not doing well. It has too much going against it.

Last few weeks of good summer weather, people are going outside.

It's Rated R

It's geared towards a niche market, a certain type of person.

Oh and this was easily the best Conan film.

Watch both films, significant items paralell both movies as mentioned previously in the forum.

Hope the movie finds an audience, like it or not we need it to succeed for the studio to proceed with a sequel. The weekend gross was miserable - they should have pushed the date a week in order to avoid the crowded weekend although who could have predicted The Help to pick up the steam it has over the past few weeks.

Whatever, ya'll can call it a remake if you like. Maybe you can find someone else to argue about it with you.
