Conan - Part 1

I love Conan...but I understand it not doing better at the box office. It's an R rated sword and sorcery picture...that cuts down the audience.

Spy Kids is a proven kids favorite and it's the fanboys who can't stand Alba for some reason. Other people like her.

THE HELP is a movie from a best selling book that speaks to many across the nation about the treatment of women and minorities...I know that doesn't fit into what teenagers on comic book websites think people should watch...but that's the thing they tend to forget....it's a diverse world out there.
Spy Kids 4 is doing very poorly. I'm sure it isn't a flop because it had a low budget but it opened with way less than all the other Spy Kid films and it had the advantage of 3D. It's going to open with less than half of what the last movie did and it's going to sale about 80% less tickets. Nobody likes Alba as an actress, she's a deeply untalented actress and couldn't get a decent role to save her life.

All of the openers failed this weekend.

I can understand Apes beating this, but losing to Spy Kids ans The Help? Really? Really?

One, a sequel to a franchise that should've been dead a years ago staring talentless Alba and another movie that looks and probably is stupid as hell staring a bunch of nobodies?

The hell is wrong with America? They make garbage like those two movies and rancid crap like Fast 5 money, yet this probably won't get its money back?

Smh

The one tiny, little bity, ray of hope that CTB might have, is that kids go back to school on Monday, which will most likely mean a decline for Spy Kids 4. Still, how much of a significant change will that prove, ??????

But ahead of Clash of the Titans?

Way ahead of it for me. I wasn't one of the people who put down Clash (it wasn't great, but fun)....but Conan blows it out of the water for me.

Hell...just seeing the young Conan in action is worth the price of admission.

Anyone with half a brain knew this movie would lose to Spy Kids well before they were released based on the audience they could draw alone. Fast 5 was a fantastic movie by the way, very fun film and well written, directed and filmed.

For the people who've seen it, would you agree with the general consensus that it's still one of the best 'sword n sandal' action movies in the last few years?

Yes, that is not saying much though as we have not had many good ones. Conan was an alright movie but could have been so much better. I will go see it again and hope it gets enough support worldwide to garner a sequel - with another director in the chair of course! I for one like the fact that we have the tech nowadays to explore the fantasy aspect of the stories and would love to see more creatures in future movies.

Yeah but
seeing a scrawny kid push around full grown muscular adults was a bit of a stretch. the scene could have been written better. using weapons was one thing, but being physically able to manhandle them is another.

I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoyed similar violent films like The Punisher, Punisher: War Zone, or Rambo. All three received similar Rotten Tomatoes scores and underperformed at the box office.

Yeah but
I thought it was cool.

Heck I can't remember how many 'sword 'n sandal' action movies theres been in last few years or so...I mean if were only comparing it to 'CoT/300', its in top 3:woot:
Maybe someone can list these types of movies past 5/10 years then maybe poll it... For right now 300-Conan-CoT...

I can't think if any real sword and sandal movies in the past few years. Gladiator, Troy, Alexander, 300, Pathfinder (if it really counts), The Eagle, the one with the lost legion and Eva Green, the one with Le Chiffre from CR, Wolfhound. Not much really.

Anybody that actually enjoyed Fast 5 probably has half a brain.

But yeah, I hoped Spy Kids would lose so they would stop making those movies and Alba would go away.

But to lose to The Help?? Wtf? That looks like a run of the mill chickflick that belongs on the Lifetime or Hallmark channel.

I really enjoyed the New Conan Movie...just spot on with Howard's novels. Especially some of the depiction of the characters.

It also sort of brought to life the Busiek/Nord visions in my head. The final scene was so Howard, with a flight of a lone cimmerian into the depths of some unfathomable cyrpt to rescue the girl and slay the evil wizard.

I thought Mamoa could have been better delivering some dialogue, he excelled with the "mirthful" version of conan , but his battle lines came off a bit phony. He looked the part, and was overrall excellent.

I would have included a few more homages to the 1st film, namely I would have had the same guy do the intro and had that intro be more similiar to the prior 2 films. Especially the costumes of the bad guys, while the main villians were OK, they lacked the punch of James Earl Jones and his crew, especially the scenes Dino ripped from Joseph Eisensteins Alexander Nevsky. Arnolds Conan Film was actually an incredibly researched and well done movie.

I would have really tried to use more music from the original film, especially at the end..where I thought the music lacked the punch it needed.

Fans of the original conan movie may be dissapointed...it lacked the cinematography and feeling of "doing more with less" than the original.

As it stood though, CTB 2011 was an EXCELLENT representation of the conan mythos, a great adventure movie, albeit not as epic or iconic as the Arnold version.

There are some things I may have done a little different, but overrall an excellent Conan Movie.

Last edited:
Actor Mako, who did the intro to the Arnold movie died a few years ago...so it would have been hard to get him to do this one.

I saw it earlier at a matinee at the mall, it was a fun flick. A few easter eggs and homages to a couple earlier Howard stories. And boobs, which are always a good.

Just got back from seeing it....

One of the worst remakes i've ever seen. It's right up there with the Clash of The Titans re-make.

It started off great with young Conan, but once his dad died the movie switched over to 'The Prince of Persia'. Where was the grit? Conan had no real threat from any of his foes. My god, this movie had the worst pacing i have ever witnessed. It jumped from one action sequence to the other. Jason looks like Conan, but everything else around him felt like an R-rate Disney adventure; i was waiting for Orlando Bloom to pop out from being a rock!

I really wanted to like this, but seriously replace Gemma Arteton and Jake Gyllenhal from 'Prince of Perisa' with Marisa Nichols and Jason Mamoa, throw in some blood and some boobs and that's what you have here... big let down. :csad:

5/10

Again, not a remake. :wall:

Since it's not really based on the source material and basically recycling the story of the first movie I think it's legitimate to call this a remake.

So, to the people who have seen this, is this basically the Milius movie without the philosophy and the opera-like approach changed into a flashy modern movie?

The plot is basically about finding his father's killer, yes, and there is a little bit of a philosophy. However how the story is structured is significantly different. One example; unlike in the Milius film, Conan was never a slave growing up in the books, and neither is he in this film.

It's closer to the source material than the arnold movies.

Howard did not write a lot of cimmeria stories, I don't beleive his mother actually died, but the origin was closer than the Arnold CTB.

In this context, it was feasibly placed within the world of a "very close" version of Howards material...it's even mentioned of his previous adventures in the elephant tower, and his days as a pirate.

In terms of flow, the movie played out as many of Howards novels..It had a similiar feel to something howard would write, without violating much in terms of howards often ambigous "canon".
