The Dark Knight Rises Concerns about TDKR

I'm not convinced it was the formula so much as the hype.

I want a new formula, a different sort of vibe. It'd be cool if each movie in the trilogy was it's own beast like that.
This is what I'm hoping for. BB was more of a non-linear movie, while TDK was extremely linear. I hope it's a linear movie, with some flashbacks(maybe), but at the same time, I hope the movie doesn't move as frantic as it did in TDK. I hope he takes more time for some emotions to seep in, and have a better pace overall. :cwink:

You don't make a billion dollars off pure hype. People went back to see the movie again and again because they liked it. I'm sure the hype was contributing factor, but at the end of the day the product delivered, and that's why people kept flocking to see it, because it was as good as it promised to be.

Then pray tell, how do we end up with films like Transformers 2? It was the second highest grosser in America that year behind TDK. It made over $400M domestic and close to $900M worldwide.

I think TDK deserves every penny it made, but "people liking it" and "being as good as it promised" are two seperate things on the opposite spectrum.

Very simple, it entertained them. Whether you like the movie or not, people went back again and again to see Transformers 2 because it entertained them. The same with Spider-Man 3.

Neither of these movies have the popularity and critical acclaim TDK has, but they entertained the masses nonetheless. That cannot be denied. TDK was as good as it promised to be because it got the huge positive feedback. The other two didn't.

Simple as that.

Yes yes, in the end the box office numbers is all about what is entertaining. Worldwide, Dead Man's Chest made more than TDK did and did it far quicker as well. Many people are mixing up what is given critical relevance and high scores with what is merely entertaining to the general audience. Like I said, two very separate things.

I guess you could call this a concern, but the look of Gotham in TDKR has me curious. What I really like about the look of Gotham in Nolan's films is how they're the same, yet very different. In TDK, it was still very much the Gotham of Begins, but at the same time it looked completely different from Begins. It not only allowed Nolan to do something aesthetically different with Gotham, but it also allowed TDK to retain it's independence as its own stand-alone story, while still fitting in as a piece of a larger story.

This is something that I would like to see repeated with TDKR: still the same Gotham, but very different look from the other 2 films. I guess my concern stems from the rumblings that TDKR could be similar to Begins in scope, coupled with the fact that a lot of the same sets could be used in TDKR again. For me, I guess I worry a bit that TDKR could just end up looking like Begins but with a different color scheme.

Nothing really all that huge, and something that I feel Nolan will avoid, but if he does make TDKR look more like Begins, I will be slightly disappointed but not enough to hate the film in any real way.

Same concerns going into TDK.

-One-liners and other "dur-hur" attempts at humor.
-Too much exposition (aka speechy dialogue).
-The same batsuit.
-The batvoice.

-Tom Hardy as Bane, I feel he would have been better as a character like black mask, Hugo Strange, Hush or even the riddler but heck him being bane cant be worse than the bane we got in batman and robin lol

- The Cat suit , hopefully nolan gives us something good

- Batmans back being broken, i really dont want to see this because it means batman wont be having much screen time unless the movie is a two part film

- The Ending, Tdk's ending blew me away, infact i wouldnt be upset if nolan didnt make a 3rd film with a movie like that, it was a tragic and heartfelt ending that gives me the chills everytime i watch it

I already like and dislike what I do about Nolan's Batman movies and I doubt thats going to change with the 3rd film.

My only concern is rather the movie is going to be another sucky 3rd film in a hot franchise. I do not have blind faith in Nolan, especially when it comes to a 3rd movie. I think that that Hathaway is the best female actress he has cast (And I like Maggie G) in this series so no worries there and Hardy should be fine. The cast so-far is fine I'm just worried that it's going to be another bad 3rd film.

I have concerns about,
The Batvoice
Goyer dialogue

But most seriously, I'm concerned with Hardy being an intimidating foe when standing next to Batman. After seeing Bronson, Bale from Begins could have whooped Hardy from Bronson's ass. He needs to get on a serious workout plan or Nolan needs to have a few tricks up his sleeve.

Goyer won't be writing any dialogue in TDKR, Jonah Nolan will, just like in TDK.

I believe he added some snippets to it, but regardless, Goyer dialogue doesnt have to be Goyer written :o

If I'm not mistaken, its mostly Jonah with a polish by Chris. Goyer has a more active role with superman

That was for TDKs screenplay. Nolan stated a long while back that he was going to be taking the script reins. The official press release clarifies that Jonah will take part in the polishing:

Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven.

Most of the cheesey one liners were from Batman Begins though. (Though they're not super distracting)

They are for me, Im not sure if its the batvoice or the writing but stuff like "I'm not wearing hockey pads" and "Storms coming" just throws me out of it.

That 'hockey pants' line is just water under the bridge for me' because there were more positives than negatives with the Dark Knight script on a constructive level.

Is it a great line? Nah but I'll live!

I hate stuff like that because up until that point I was like, wow, this movie is perfect so far, then that happens and Im like Jesus christ here we go. And all that horrible car-chase "Okay thats not good!" crap just makes me cringe.

My only problem with the one-liners (and I don't mind them as much as some other folk do) is that they just flat out don't work. They only make me roll my eyes and seem like a desperate attempt to lighten the mood.

I haven't watched Begins in forever so my memory is failing me regarding the finer details but I was more offended by the constant speeches spewing from Rachel and other offenders. Didn't care for the speeches in TDK either but the movie is so good and so much better than Begins that it doesn't bother me as much.

In conclusion, I do hope that the one-liners are kept to a minimum because they aren't good. But as I said in my original post, I 100% believe that the things in the series that I dislike will stick around.

The ugly clunky Bat-suit

The ugly clunky Batmobile

The annoying, distracting and awful Bat-voice

The poorly shot and edited fight scenes

The Speeches

The one-liners

I expect all of those to stay so...*shrugs* I just deal with it and b**ch about it in my reviews.

While the fight scenes are ten times better in The Dark Knight, I do agree that they're kinda awkward looking. I think it's the blocking (the position of the actors and their movements) and lack of fluid editing.

I thought the fight scenes in the Dark Knight were greaaaatly improved. I really hope Bale has been told to try to work out his voice, some of the things he says in the dark knight (not one liners) are just difficult to listen to, and I dont mean challenging, I mean embarrassing. (This city........just showed you....) Bleh.

....Youre not a fan of the tumbler Spidey???
