Contest of Marvels II Thread 4

DOMINO VS. PESTILENCE:

Another one of my matches where some of the biographies are inaccurate. Again, it says in a few sources that Pestilence needs to touch her victim to effect them. One site says, "she could be exposed to a disease, alter it to be more lethal, and then spread it by touch." But, a correct biography from mutanthigh states "(a)s Pestilence she may not have needed to be in physical contact with her target to have an effect." (The reason for these inaccuracies, I believe, is due to the fact these are former mutants whose powers have been increased, due to Apocalypse's altering. So, as Plague, Pestilence wasn't nearly as powerful.)

With that out of the way, Pestilence would simply transform one of many diseases that are around Avalon and alter it enough to infect Domino. As her powers state, she'd simply produce "lethal diseases within her body and transmits the spores through her hands to make (Domino) feel sick, delirious, and eventually die." Even Domino's luck powers won't save her from a deadly virus.

Here is how this match would happen. Pestilence used to be a member of the Morlocks. She knows about hiding and remaining undetected within a populated area. Also, she would know about Avalon and Domino with Apocalypse's vast knowledge of mutants. Pestilence would know that she didn't even need to see Domino for her to take Domino out. Pestilence would simply find a disease floating around Avalon, transform the disease into a deadly, fast-acting, lethal virus...one that could be easily transmitted from person to person. Seeing that this would be a very crowded city, the disease would spread fast. Just imagine it...one person falls down, others come to see what's happened. The disease spreads. Eventually, this would infect, and kill, all of Avalon...including Domino. It sucks that everyone has to die a horrible death..but, winning is everything. Apocalypse has preached "survival of the fittest," and Pestilence isn't going to be stupid enough to let Domino and her fighting skills get anywhere near her. Pestilence would simply wait out the death of everyone by hiding in the catacombs under Avalon.

Winner = Pestilence

Domino Vs Pestilence

This plan came to me in a dream last night... :yay:

I have to confess, going into this match I thought it would be a tough one. There's loads of people adding to pestilence's range and scope which makes life very hard for domino...but then I took into account the preptime element and the exact nature of domino's powers. To quote wiki

Domino's mutant abilities cause her to constantly emanate a field that affects the laws of probability, usually manifesting itself as good luck. This effect constantly emanates from her body at all times and is completely subconscious. However, it is also largely participatory - in order for the luck to take effect, Domino herself must engage in an action whose chance she can affect.

So my conjecture would be that by having a sufficiently large number of vaxines shecan protect herself from, or at least reduce the effect of, whatever pestilence can throw at her. Say she is vaxinated against 30 different diseases, domino's luck powers should cause the first 30 diseases that pestilence comes into contact with to be the ones she is immune to. This means that while they will be pumped up versions of the3 disease domino is going to have a natural immunity to anything pestilence can throw at her.

Adding to domino's advantage will be the people. You see normally, finding a single target amongst a crowd would be difficult but with pestilence killing people with horrible diseases where ever she goes, she might as well paint a bullseye on her forehead! By climbing up onto the roof of any of the various buildings ot only will domino make it harder for pestilence's powers to reach her (she has range but always to had to get fairly close to her opponent.) she gets clear ariel view. With any number of sniper rifles she is highly versed in she can hit a blade of grass from a kilometer away, by using both her training as member/leader of the six pack and her luck enhancing powers to make sure pestilence goes down with a single shot between te eyes.

Pestience has range, she just doesn't have the toughness to get WITHIN range (remember EVERY bio says pestilence is extemely physically weak)

no protection+long range, high calibre rifle=dead horseman

Domino's a tough girl, she can win this one with ease

WINNER: DOMINO!

(p.s. who do you want to see pictures of for the next few months? Hot, scantily clad panda woman, or a disease ridden scabby old crone? :cwink: )

Ok, the sexy picture is a cheap tactic! At least Trigger won't be effected...(ummm, unless she swings that way.)

Domino does have the luck power, which is her only defense in this match-up that would really worry me. But, it won't help her with all the disease that she will run up against.

Domino can inject herself with whatever she can use to protect her...but, the simple fact is disease in Otherworld would be completely different from diseases in the 616. Just like when the Europeans came to America and killed off many Native Americans with their diseases, it will be the same for Domino. She will not know the various viruses that are floating around Otherworld; Pestilence will with her immediate contact with them.

Now, on top of this, in prep time, Pestilence will be carrying a host virus into her battle that is very deadly. As soon as she arrives, she will mix these deadly diseases, ensuring Domino and everyone's death. Domino doesn't stand a chance.

Plus, if you think about how well Pestilence will be able to hide, she can just lay among the dead. Domino would pass by her, and she'd be none the wiser. In fact, Pestilence would simply increase the diseases, adding more, without Domino being able to realize she'd just gotten more infected. With Domino unable to find Pestilence, and Pestilence just being able to ride out the fight until Domino falls, it's all it will take.

Winner = Pestilence

As another factor the luck will help with the fact that with most diseases there is always some minimal probablity that you're immune system will simply naturally be able to cope with it. Since she has augmented this by getting vaccinations this means there's a good chance she will be largely unnaffected.

Domino has always been a prominent figure in the six pack. Very experienced at dimension hopping and more importantly time travel. She will be able to get the vaccines she needs, if not employ some kind of future tech to improve her chances of staying infection free. Taking this into account anything pestilence can get, so too can domino.

Now, on top of this, in prep time, Pestilence will be carrying a host virus into her battle that is very deadly. As soon as she arrives, she will mix these deadly diseases, ensuring Domino and everyone's death. Domino doesn't stand a chance.

She's a trained merc, she's not going to just run into the city. She'll be packing the kind of sniper rifle where she can pick off anyone she wants from the woods irrespective of which island they're on. And she'll be deadly accurate on account of the luck factor. infections can't travel a thousand or so metres without a host to get them there.

Plus, if you think about how well Pestilence will be able to hide, she can just lay among the dead. Domino would pass by her, and she'd be none the wiser. In fact, Pestilence would simply increase the diseases, adding more, without Domino being able to realize she'd just gotten more infected.

Anyone who's seen any war film ever made knows this one. If she sees a load of infected dead people she'll simply walk out and wait for pestilence to come to her. Pestilence is basically a frail old woman. Without her horse she would be at a serious disadvantage in this fight on account of domino's enhanced speed, agility and luck.

With Domino unable to find Pestilence, and Pestilence just being able to ride out the fight until Domino falls, it's all it will take.

Winner = Pestilence

Great Hunters don't seek out their prey, they get within it's viscinity and let the prey look for them.

BRACKET 7,

Match 9:

Zaladane (TRIGGER) bio

vs.

Meggan (TRIGGER) bio

Honestly since this is my choice, so I'll just go with Zaladane, if only because of her variety. I don't think a shapeshifter would go too far.

But, as I pointed out, the vaccinations will do no good. Plus, the virus she'd carry over from prep time OBVIOUSLY wouldn't have a vacination. There are diseases in this world that do not have a vacination to protect people...and, Apocalypse would also have resources of diseases within his base. This isn't like Domino just goes down to the health department and gets a flu shot. Think about it. When a new deadly disease comes around, it takes top scientists quite a while to find a vaccine that will be effective enough. And, the diseases that Domino will be infected with simply won't have a vaccine.

Plus, as I pointed out, Domino has no vaccine for diseases in Otherworld.

Domino has NEVER been to Otherworld. And, as she cannot use means that aren't available to her or other people, she has no means during prep time to find this out. You have a current version of Domino, one who hasn't been getting along with Cable for some time. She is not currently a member of the Six Pack...and, she clearly is not a member of the X-Men. Meanwhile, Pestilence does have information that Apocalypse would have. You are simply OUT-PREPPED!

There are airborn viruses. You are going to be in Avalon...not some deep woods outside of the area. And, a sniper rifle will do you no good; because you simply will not find Pestilence. Avalon is a large city, and the deadly virus will spread quicker than you think. And, if you just imagine how Domino will avoid dead people like the plague (pun intended), Pestilence, as I pointed out, can just lay down and act dead among them.

Winner = Pestilence

I'm not debating for either side but I seriously suggest you research Meggan's power more thoroughly. She's not just a shapeshifter.

Sorry if this is a bit short but it's late and I need to get to bed.

Domino's Lucky, extremely lucky and she's taken limited precautions, this means her chances of freedom from infection are increased exponentially simply by her luck factor. She will be in possesion of a particular body chemistry that grants a degree of protection from these viruses.

She's also a trained merc and as a result patient, much more patient than pestilence. She will wait all day to avoid getting infected far away from where pestience has been. pestilence has to get to a populated area where domino is before she can use her powers. If she had her horse that ould be easy, but she's walking. She's weak, famous for it in fact. She doesn't stand a chance when domino can pick her off with a head shot from near a mile away.

Domino will be wearing a haz-met (spelling?) or similar to help protect her. If she can back herself away into an empty building she can wait for pestilence to come up the road and pick her off. Incidentally she's also an expert in explosives so any doors/windows would be wired.

Then it's just a waiting game.

So, you are now bringing a "haz-met" with you to battle? Ok, I want everyone to imagine Domino in a "haz-met" suit. She's not going to be able to use her weapons, she's going to stick out like a sore thumb, and everyone dying is obviously going to think she's the cause for their deaths. The people around her will end up ripping the suit off her in a panic, in fact.

Face it....Pestilence doesn't have to be around Domino, the idea of a "haz-met" suit is completely ridiculous and not suited at all for battle, and I've pretty much outlined how and why this battle plan will work. Domino's luck power is designed for fighting...and, we've seen it doesn't always work. Do you really think it will work to avoid a deadly plague? I don't.

Winner = Pestilence

Zaladane vs. Meggan:

Both are characters of Triggers, so I thought I'd give a little information.

The biography on Zaladane really isn't that good. Here is a better description of her powers:

Known Superhuman Powers: Zaladane is a master sorceress who can manipulate the forces of magic for a variety of effects, including the control of the minds of others. Zaladane once stole and temporarily possessed Polaris' superhuman power to manipulate magnetic forces.

You might also find biographies that say the following:

Abilitiesability to wield and manipulate magic, magnetism.

BUT, voters should scratch out the "magnetism." Those were stolen powers from Polaris that are not involved in this match-up. She only had them for a short time.

Finally, this last part about her powers provides a lot of insight about her ability to "wield and manipulate magic," which is very confusing to a voter:

Zaladane is a sorceress with the ability to wield and manipulate magic. She primarilly has used these powers for mind control and limited energy projection.

For Meggan, the following is provided:

Shapeshifting;
Empathy;
Flight;
ability to see energy auras;
ability to control natural elements

This next portion is lengthy, but really gives the voter an understanding of how Meggan's powers work:

Meggan has three powers; empathy, elemental powers and shapeshifting. These powers actually blend together, aspects of one power affecting the others. Meggan has been referred to as an "elemental empath", an "empathic metamorph", and an "elemental metamorph". Meggan's primary power is her empathy, a telepathic talent which enables her to sense the emotions and feelings of all living creatures (from people, to animals, to plants) and can broadcast her own feelings to influence other people's emotions. She can also psionically "see" psychic, natural, and mystical energy auras. Her empathic powers are highly sensitive, and make her vulnerable to telepathic manipulation. Her empathy also lets her connect to the "life force" of the Earth itself, which brings up her second power; elemental control.
Thanks to Meggan's empathy, she has a psionic link to the natural forces of the Earth. By "speaking" to the elements, Meggan can command the environment around her, and her emotional state can affect the local ecosystems. She can extinguish forest fires with a thought, summon gale force winds or part the waters of a lake with wave of her hand, cause earthquakes in a flash of anger. Meggan has even been observed causing electromagnetic pulses by commanding the magnetic fields around her, freezing opponents by rapidly dropping the air temperature around them, or increasing the powers of elemental mutants (such as increasing the temperature of Peter Wisdom's heat blasts). Meggan has used her elemental powers to affect man-made objects, such as actually making the atoms in a building's roof move apart, creating a hole in the roof that resealed itself (without a trace of ever having a hole) once Meggan passed through (which suggests that Meggan's elemental powers may have a psychokinetic quality). Meggan can focus the elemental energies around her into devastating energy blasts. She has also been observed controlling mystical energies. And she can fly (either by levitation or controlling wind or gravity)
Finally, Meggan is a shapeshifter who can assume the form of any living creature, even those who only exist in legends (once she became a Godzilla-like dragon and actually breathed fire, and another occasion she became a werewolf that looked like fellow X-Man Wolfsbane, and had all of a wolf's natural abilities). Meggan can assume the form of other people as well. Thanks to her empathy, Meggan's body will actually change in response to the emotions around her, becoming beautiful when she feels loved, or hideous when she feels fear or anger. Her elemental powers also cause Meggan to change in response to her surroundings, growing fur in extreme cold, or gills when she is submerged underwater. She can even increase the density of her muscle tissue to boost her strength to superhuman levels.

There is one portion of the above that would give cause for concern in this match-up: "Her empathic powers are highly sensitive, and make her vulnerable to telepathic manipulation." But, the voter should realize that Meggan will know everything about Zaladane from the many resources available to her. Plus, remember, that Meggan lives in Otherworld; so, location is totally at her advantage.

Clearly, Meggan is much more than a shapeshifter...and, Zaladane isn't as great as she initially appears. Location and Knowledge is very one-sided in this match-up, all positives for Meggan and negatives for Zaladane.

Winner = Meggan

We're not talking outbreak here. Something similar to a wetsuit and a gas mask preventing inhalation would certainly provide protection against airborn viruses and with regards those transmitted via physical contact, all she has to do is stay a good distance away.

To cap it off you have a character WELL versed in time travel meaning she can retrieve equipment to counter anyinfections from any point in the future. You don't think that, given the nature of medical science, man will still fall ill to diseases that threaten us today several hundred years in the future. With a character such as domino that has a history with time travel you simply cannot judge this kind of thing by todays standards.

In the end this fight will be ended by a bullet through pestilence's brain. Lights out.

WINNER:DOMINO!

Invisible Woman vs. Siryn:

Both are characters of Darthphere. Basically, this is a slaughter. Invisible Woman has the resources to find out everything about Siryn and Otherworld (Avalon). She'd be prepared to deal with Siryn's powers, and Sue's experience and knowledge totally takes this fight.

Winner = Invisible Woman

Not all viruses are transmitted via physical contact, hense the term "airborn virus." Plus, the time traveling hasn't been done with her since she was linked up with Cable. Cable performed the time traveling, and your current version hasn't been linked up with Cable for some time. In fact, she holds a grudge against Cable. Simply put, the above statement about time travel should be stricken from the record. And, I repeat, Domino has no ability to time travel...that clearly was associated with her time with Cable. DOMINO CANNOT TIME TRAVEL!!! I even looked in various biographies. Time travel is not mentioned, unless it's in regards to Cable, as in the following statement: "she worked as a mercenary since an early age and founded the mercenary band the Six-Pack, which introduced her to the mutant time traveler Cable." The six-pack isn't together any longer, she's not with Cable anymore, and she wouldn't be able to use him in the match, anyway.

And, like I said, put on a gas mask. How well can you see? Would you notice someone sneaking around behind you?? Would the human population of Avalon let you walk around them as they are dying, and you have the one gas mask in their vacinity???

To put it simply, this idea is ridiculous on soooo many levels. All I ask is for the voters to picture the above scenario in their minds and ask themselves to few questions that came to my mind in just these first few seconds.

Winner = Pestilence!

(P.S. This is my last word on the matter. I've presented my case, and I'll let it go to the jury.)

1 she's going to be in an abandoned buidling with te entry points covered with explosives so won't need to keep checking behind her
2. She doesn't need to see that clearly, she could no scope you from a thousand metres away and still get a headshot every time, this just means she has to concentrate that bit harder
3.None of the people will see her, see point one.

Wanna put this one to bed as well? (serious)

WINNER: DOMINO!

We can put this one to bed, and let the voters decide.

Thanks for two great matches, Hippy. It's exactly what I needed this week, and I appreciate you bringing out the best in me. It's a pleasure to fight you anytime. (Now, let's hope we don't have another tie!)

*Meggan - (I think Meggan is a great character to have. She'd be tough to beat, while I think a debator could find loopholes while fighting Zaladane.)

*Swarm

*Invisible Woman - (The easiest match-up of the week.)

*Pestilence - (Wow...that debate really won me over. What a great debator!!!)

Results So Far:

Meggan currently beating Zaladane 4-1
Swarm currently beating Mad Thinker 5-0
Invisible Woman currently beating Siryn 4-1
Pestilence currently beating Domino 3-2

Zaladane
Mad Thinker
Invisible Woman
Pestilence (the sniper rifle almost did it for me because I thought the same thing, but it would be too easy for Pestilence to hide)
