Well becasue he knew that what he was dealing with was no laughing matter. And he knew what will happen if he didnt do what he needed to do.

true, he saw his death.. and his birth as ONSLAUGHT

......................oh no

Xavier is not the happy-go-lucky guy that everyone thinks he is. In this movie we saw a darker side to him and recently in the comics we have found out about the evil things he's done. Those things causing Scott to kick Xavier out of his own mansion.

I thought this was something to make his death easier to handle. For the casual observer he's no longer the kindly father figure he was in the first two, so you don;t feel as bad when he buys it..

The Wolverine Vs Prof X argument was interesting but I don't think the aim was to cushion the impact of Xavier's death.

I loved his atitude in this film, it made you realize this WASNT a matter that could be sorted with reason, this was really HEAVY stuff and sometimes you just have to handle it. I would have done the same thing, wolverine is a stubborn sunofa*****.... and xavier wanted jean back, he realized that she was going and going fast to the dark side and wanted her to stay here.. she was like a daugther to him.... so he can be selfish.. in my eyes...

nothing has happened liek this ever before in the xavier life, in teh first 2 movies it was buildup... the x-men handled it... after all he's been thru, even in the last 2, i think he would be naturally bitter, hes holding all this anger inside of him and finding peaceful ways out....

"sometimes when you cage the dueschbagg, the dueschbagg gets angry..."

Check out Deadly Genesis#6.

Xavier: "Scott...I was hoping we could talk today."
Scott: "We will...because there's something I need to say to you.
I've known you most of my life, Charles, and I've trusted you for most of it. I've always known you weren't perfect, and I knew you had your secrets, but..."
Xavier: "I betrayed you, Scott, and Alex...I know that. But if you would just let me explain..."
Scott: "I know why you did it, and some part of me understands. But it doesn't change what happened. Nothing can... So, you have to leave, Professor. You're not welcome at the institute anymore."
Xavier: "Scott. This is my home...my life. I'm not going to just--"
Scott: "Yes, you are. I run the institute now, not you... You're not even a mutant anymore, Charles...you don't belong here."
Deep stuff.

Not to mention how he sent a team of young, un-experienced kids(one of them being the 3rd Summers Bro.) to go rescue the Xmen. And he got them killed, and then made everyone forget about it. Not so much of a nice guy.

And I guess you cant forget him training a young girl to be spy. Then planing her in the Hellfire Club.

I like the Darker side of Xaivier. He knew about Jeans unstability and limitless power, so he was worried. Here he is trying to keep everyone safe and Logan was trying to grill him... Xaiver wasn't having it. I liked that part, I liked even more when he finds Logan on the ground and says "what have you done?!", because it shome some annoyance with Logan, and rightfully so.

I felt bad for Xaivier too when Magneto completely manipulated Jean against him, his death was the most amazing scene in the movie.
R.I.P. Charles Xaivier

I actually hated that line. That is SO unlike anything Xavier would say, that I was very disappointed with that line. Xavier was always understanding and encouraging, especially with Logan. I can see Xavier saying something like "Hopefully you'll understand why I had to do it someday."
Because Logan of all people understands how horrible it is to lose a part of your memory/brain.

Protecting Jean from herself and protecting others from Jean isn't exactly showing a darker side.

I can keep going on how I hated that forever. It was so out of character.

But thats just it, it shows how worried he is about Jean, and more importantly getting the Pheonix under control.

I think Xavier showed his darker side because, for once, he felt helpless.

I hated Deadly Genesis for multiple reasons, although the ending there was pretty decent. However the "Professor Xavier is a DICK" came about initially from Kitty Pryde who was angered by her demotion to the New Mutants. Ever since then Xavier's ethics have come into play at various points. Such as leaving the school to Magneto, harboring a secret crush (yes sexual desire) for Jean Grey (brought about by Stan Lee in issue 3 but not address till 30 years later), mindwiping Magneto, attempting to psychically alter Amelia to stay, etc. However it is only of late he really truly seemed like a jackass. A lot of readers feel disparaged by this, truly he had to be moved out of the picture at some point. I would have rather he died at the end of Morrison's run instead of Jean. However instead they chose to alienate him.

Good point, I agree. They show this when he says "shes trying to block my thoughts, shes so powerfull"
