Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Dat J. August Richards Thread

So his character starts with an M.
And has super strength, super jumping, super endurance, super speed.
Has some kind of fiery device implanted in his forearms/wrists, which may be of alien origin.
Given Marvel Studios' track record, and the strong hints in Bell's interview, there's a good chance that the character was not black in the comics.

Mar-Vell?

Another tack, less cosmic:

What if "M" is....Mallen?
He's got the right powerset, and the right hoodie look, even if the white supremacist angle is obviously out the window. Maybe instead of being a bad guy, the MCU Mallen is misunderstood and being blamed for Extremis-related explosions.

doesnt explain his arm

I'm just trying to wait and see who he is since it can now basically be anyone, I'm sure it will come out before the show actually airs haha. if the 'M' is actually a clue and not just throwing us for a loop I guess Moon Knight could be an option as well.

Some kind of regulatory tech AIM put on him? A collar or leash, of sorts?

I dunno, the vfx imagery in the trailer is very, very much like Extremis and Stark's holographic "NCIS" forensics from IM3. I get the feeling now that the pilot might be a sequel (or "sidequel") of sorts for IM3, with JAR playing a version of Mallen --- a wounded warrior who is thankful for his Extremis powers but wants to use them for good instead of evil, and is on the run from AIM now.

50 States Initiative had both Gauntlet and Armory, each of whom had an alien weapon attached to their arm. One of which an MVP clone ended up with iirc.

Bu this doesn't look like one of those. And while we're all assuming that this object is where his powers are originating, maybe it's something else entirely, like a tracker, or power amplifier, or some kind of leash like Sam suggested.

In fact are we even certain that's Richards arm? That's a different shirt than the one he's wearing in the other clips, which has red in it. Also it looks like Simmons pulls a similar looking but partially melted device off that roasted corpse.

^I'm not entirely sure that Simmons' gizmo is the same thing that JAR is wearing (yeah, still pretty sure that's JAR's arm); but if it is, Simmons says it's alien in origin. Which would rule out Extremis.

Personally, I still think JAR is Mallen, and the device is Extremis-related and put there by AIM; and the thing Simmons is looking at is something else, an alien device. Which leads me to believe that the Bad Guy in this pilot (Gray Shirt, for lack of a better descriptor now) is either alien, or a super who's knowingly working for the aliens.

I still want to see a proper introduction of Cloak to the Marvel movie/TV-universe.

Maybe he's Machine Man? I got the sense that from that interview before that he is playing a non African American in the comics and he was just the right person for the job so it's possible.

Am I the first to wonder if he's Machine Man?

Is it possible that JAR is Ms Marvel? Marvel did say that he was just the best actor for the job and the fact that it's JAR or that he's black has nothing to do with who the character is in the comics.

Or if not Ms Marvel, then another usually female character. We've seen gender changes in other shows before (Battlestar Galactica and Hawaii 5-0).

yeah but he wouldn't be Ms marvel.... he'd be Mr Marvel...who is just...Captain mar-vel

Not if he is called Karol Danvers (he could be half Polish to get that first name). Then he'd still be what was traditionally the Carol Danvers character (whether she calls herself Ms Marvel or Captain Marvel) but just turned into a black guy.

It might've seemed silly, but after IM3 people have to be prepared for any kind of changes in Marvel.

Ooooo I was okay with IM3 but even I couldn't get behind THAT sort of change....could you imagine the fan-splosion fromt hat?

Well I would find that unacceptable too, but I'm just spitballing here as we need to be prepared for anything now. And the character that JAR is playing does have super strength and those things on his wrist could be some kind of Kree negaband potentially.

And it's not without precedent to change a character's gender in TV shows.

I'm gonna go 'out on a limb' and suggest it's far more likely that he's Mar-Vell than "Karol Danvers" - which, incidentally doesn't start with an M...

It really does seem like a new character... for all intents and purposes, perhaps with some allusion to the comics.

But Ms Marvel does.

And wasn't it clarified that the character doesn't necessarily start with an "m" anyway, but that the person might've just been thinking aloud with a "hmmm" or "mmm"?

They could name his character Marv and give him a last name that starts with L. Lloyd, Lanister, whatever.

Marv L.

I like it.

But as I said in other threads, his name might be "Rick Jones." And he'd still be Mar-Vell. Since that's "historically" who Mar-Vell worked through, with the whole body switch thing.

If he is Rick Jones, I find it a shame that he has no connection to Bruce Banner or even his origin.

I love this idea.
Hope you were divinely inspired by the comics Gods and guessed correctly.

Rick Jones is briefly acknowledged in TIH. He was apparently in contact with Bruce at some point.

HE didn't reveal his role but this is the first time he's spoken about being in the pilot:
