BvS David S. Goyer IS the Script Writer! - Part 2

Does suggesting they're virgins who turn to comics for sexual fulfilment count?

Where did he suggest that?

Where does any of the things he said actually make fun of the things they like?

He's poking fun at the fact that most normal people don't know who Martian Manhunter is, and haven't immersed themselves in the world of comics and superheroes like many fanboys have. This is a legitimate point to make when it comes to the recognizeability of a character.

He's doing so in a "shorthand" that comics fans will immediately understand. It's a form of self-deprecating humor.

Seriously, grow a thicker skin and stop reading into things so much.

Story credit means they basically come up with the main plot beats (this happens, then that happens, which leads to this happening). The screenplay fleshes that out and connects all the dots. The dialogue etc.

ah, thanks.

could have used some of that screenplay polish in MOS.......lol.

Does suggesting they're virgins who turn to comics for sexual fulfilment count?

He's saying people who know who Martian Manhunter is probably don't get laid. Obviously joking. But it's still disrespectful and ignorant.

It's a joke, nothing more, nothing less. I could understand if it were a sexist joke? racist quip? religious mockery? but oh no, someone has called comic book geeks a bunch of virgins! I find it interesting how many people are showing their insecurity over such a juvenile bit of humour.

Are you being wilfully obtuse? He's making fun of people who know and like Martian Manhunter.

No...he's not.

He's sharing an in joke with fellow fanboys. That they know who characters like MM are because they devote a decent amount of energy to the superhero culture.

I'm not insecure, at all. I just think the geezer is a bit of a nob head.

If you aren't insecure, why did you bother to say "I'm not insecure" when no one accused you of being so?

Methinks the lady doth protest, and so on.

And how old are you that David Goyer is a "geezer"?

No...he's not.

They didn't seem too impressed with it either.

It's not so much the specifics. It's just him being ignorant and rude. Doesn't matter if it's a joke.

Again, if i made fun of some kid with downs syndrome but then prefaced that with "oh i was only joking!" what would that make me in your eyes?

Hopefully you'd think i'm a raging *****e bag.

What did he say that was comparable to making fun of someone with downs syndrome?

On shehulk,
If someone made a joke like say, the various theories about superman having sex with lois in that mall rats movie or that other well known superman wonderwoman one. Then saying you have the right to treat this same person in the way you would someone that was making fun of those afflicted with downs syndrome is....opportunistic imo. Just another chance to point fingers at someone you clearly have something against. Like when obama says something silly and fox news goes nuts.

Unless of course this is about him poking fun at a social group he himself admits to being a part of. Making fun of basement dwelling beard necks and all that is hardly a crime. Again, it was a self deprecating joke. It's not like he was a jock being asked about the character and just answered with, "ask the losers". It was a simple parable and commentary on the characters lack of notoriety.

Even if he wasn't joking it wouldn't be that big a deal. This isn't downs syndrome, so throwing that term around..never mind.

Secondly, I don't even get what he said about J'onn. That the full name is unnecessary and lame. It's not like all that many superheroes these days have the term 'martian' in their name. It's not like 'hawkeye' or some other code name. The character has various other alias' to go by.
Does anyone even know the story behind the name?

If this is about Goyer thinking the MM character wastes his powers. So what, many people feel the same way about many characters with god like powers. That doesn't mean he's going to write the characterization all that differently. It's not like thinking Bruce Wayne wastes all his money on crime fighting is going to make me write a batman that spends all his time in the play boy mansion...oops better be careful, that joke was maybe in bad taste.

I personally like his angle with the dna. Reminds me of the 5th element. Especially if he then used as a gov't tool(at first).

If a chris nolan or a joss whedon said this, no one would be up in arms like this. Heck Nolan pretty much dissed the Riddler in the lead up to TDKR, Goyer is just an easy target because he's a mediocre writer.

They didn't seem too impressed with it either.

Actually, they almost all laughed.

If they weren't impressed, its probably because it was literally a passing moment, and they recognized no ill intent. Because they have social and communications skills and know when they're actually being made fun of, and when someone is, as has been pointed out, "taking the piss".

I'm just saying, if you've made your livelihood on comic book movies, yet your mental image of your fans is basically Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons, doesn't that warrant some criticism?

Even if he was being serious, It'd be more concerning if he said that while being attached to write the script for a Martian Manhunter movie. He isn't.

I'm a glass full of "don't give a ****" when it comes to this.

This pretty much sums up what I came here to say. Don't really care about his other comments, he was clearly joking.

ITT: People can't learn to take a joke.

Then again, fanboys rage over the smallest things anyways.

You still think he was serious.

Wow.

How else am I supposed to interpret this:

"How many people in the audience have heard of Martian Manhunter?...How many people that raised their hands have ever been laid?"

Or this:

"She-Hulk was the extension of the male power fantasy. So it’s like if I’m going to be this geek who becomes the Hulk then let’s create a giant green porn star that only the Hulk could ****."

You can say he was joking, but then how do you interpret those quotes as anything other than being ignorant/dismissive of his core fan base?

Wow. I can't believe so many people are actually defending him.
Just because he was "joking"? Joking doesn't make it any better. What he said was stupid and rude.
The dude basically has a career because of comics.

And she-hulk is not a stupid character.

/\this. There is no defending his comments in regard to She Hulk. They are sexist. And this guy is responsible for writing the first incarnation of Wonder Woman on the silver screen. Depressing thought.

Chris Terrio is....don't be changing **** just cause. :BA

I just realized Goyer looks like Stanley Tucci's *****e younger brother.

I'm not even a much of a DC fan, outside. I just think he came off as a *****e who doesn't get comic books, even though he's worked in them for years.

Because of a few jokes? The stereotypical nerd rage coming out in full rage mode proved him right.

She Hulk jokes are no different than when someone brings up how Superman and Lois would do it. :woot:

Kevin Smith does even harsher jokes about cbm characters all the time, but no fuss is made.

How else am I supposed to interpret this:

"How many people in the audience have heard of Martian Manhunter?...How many people that raised their hands have ever been laid?"

Given the context?

As a joke.

That's what he intended, and that's how it was received.

Or this:

"She-Hulk was the extension of the male power fantasy. So it’s like if I’m going to be this geek who becomes the Hulk then let’s create a giant green porn star that only the Hulk could ****."

Again...

Given the context?

As a joke.

The WHOLE podcast was a series of jokes, and the section people are talking about is this sort of half-ass, tongue in cheek "reinvention of superheroes" segment that they basically drew out of a hat.

You can say he was joking, but then how do you interpret those quotes as anything other than being ignorant/dismissive of his core fan base?

Because I have common sense, and I know David Goyer, who is sitting in a room full of said fanbase, is not being ignorant or dismissive of them. He's entertaining them.
